OBJECTIVES: Studies typically show that men are at higher risk for heavy alcohol use than women. Research linking conformity to masculine norms and drinking behaviors among adult males has grown steadily during the past 10 years. We conducted the first meta-analysis that examines (a) the strength of the associations between conformity to masculine norms and alcohol use outcomes, and (b) the extent to which the strength of these associations would be affected by the specific type of drinking behavior or methodological factors.
METHODS: We included 35 studies (N=32,412) in this meta-analysis th

Korean dramas (K-dramas), with their unique characteristics, often encourage binge-watching. Moreover, the cultural norms and rituals surrounding alcohol, prevalent in South Korea, are mirrored in K-dramas that have gained global audiences in recent years. The present study aimed to examine problematic K-drama series watching, and the potential associations with alcohol consumption among global adult audiences from Israel and Indonesia. An online questionnaire was distributed to a non-probability convenience sample of 638 adult viewers of K-drama, of whom 383 (60%) were Indonesian and 255 (40%

OBJECTIVES: Heavy alcohol intake may exacerbate gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in adults with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS); however, the role of alcohol in IBS is unclear. We investigated prospective associations between daily patterns of alcohol intake and next day's GI symptoms using daily diaries.
METHODS: In an observational study of women aged 18-48 years with IBS and healthy controls, participants recorded daily GI symptoms, alcohol intake, caffeine intake, and cigarette smoking for ≈ 1 month. GI symptoms included abdominal pain, abdominal bloating, intestinal gas, diarrhea, constipat

Cultured human skeletal-muscle satellite cells have properties of mesenchymal stem cells (skeletal muscle satellite cell-derived mesenchymal stem cells, SkMSCs) and play anti-inflammatory roles by secreting prostaglandin E2 and hepatocyte growth factor (HGF). To evaluate the utility of SkMSCs in treating liver diseases, we determined whether SkMSCs could ameliorate acute liver and gut inflammation induced by binge ethanol administration. Binge drinking of ethanol led to weight loss in the body and spleen, liver inflammation and steatosis, and increased serum ALT and AST levels (markers of live

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the current study was to assess the role of gender and ethnicity in the relationship between alcohol use and risky sexual behavior.
METHOD: Sexually active college students (n = 425) reported on alcohol expectancies, perceived risk of HIV, and drinking and sexual behavior in the context of a larger health behavior survey.
RESULTS: Approximately one-third of participants reported binge drinking 3 or more times in the past two weeks. African-American women reported less drinking and less positive alcohol expectancies than other women. Older men engaged more often tha

Previous research on the influence of substance use on PrEP uptake and adherence among transgender women has either relied on cross-sectional analyses or on combined samples of cisgender men who have sex with men and a much smaller subsample of transgender women. To the best of our knowledge, no longitudinal study has examined the relationship of substance use and PrEP use/adherence among young transgender women and nonbinary people assigned male at birth (TNBY). We sought to understand whether substance use (i.e., binge drinking, marijuana use, and illicit drug use) predicts PrEP uptake and a

BACKGROUND: Although it is well known that France has a cultural history of alcohol use, no recent French data on alcohol consumption during pregnancy in a large sample are available.
METHODS: To determine the alcohol consumption patterns among pregnant women in France, we analyzed data from a 1-year multicenter self-survey. Sociodemographic profile, obstetrical history, neonatal data, and a self-report for assessing drinking patterns during pregnancy including AUDIT were recorded from women who delivered recently. Cases of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) were also reported.
RESULTS: A total of

Binge drinking contributes to an increasing number of emergency department visits in the United States. Previous work demonstrated that an alcohol binge impairs cardiac performance and exerts complex hemodynamic effects through the activation of the endocannabinoid-mediated cannabinoid type 1 receptor (CB1R) signaling pathway. Anandamide (AEA), an endogenous CB1R agonist, is synthesized in response to various stressors and tissue injury. However, the role of binge drinking in increasing myocardial AEA levels, which leads to CB1R-dependent cardiodepression, remains unclear. This work studied ho

Adolescent binge drinking is a strong predictor of alcohol use disorder and related mental health outcomes in adulthood, which may be due to disruptions in myelination during this dynamic period of brain development. White matter expansion in frontal regions during adolescence is essential for mature decision-making and stress regulation, yet the cellular mechanisms by which alcohol disrupts this process remain poorly understood. We used multi-label immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy to visualize proteins in oligodendrocyte lineage cells and myelin ensheathment of axons in the anterior

The goal of the current investigation was to address whether affective decision making would serve as a unique neuropsychological marker to predict drinking behaviors among adolescents. We conducted a longitudinal study of 181 Chinese adolescents in Chengdu city, China. In their 10th grade (ages 15-16), these adolescents were tested for their affective decision-making ability using the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) and working memory capacity using the Self-Ordered Pointing Test. Self-report questionnaires were used to assess academic performance and drinking behaviors. At 1-year follow-up, questio

INTRODUCTION: Stimulant and heavy alcohol use are prevalent and associated with elevated risk for HIV seroconversion among men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women. In addition, each can pose difficulties for antiretroviral adherence among people living with HIV. Scant research has examined the associations of stimulant and heavy alcohol use with adherence to daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among MSM and transgender women. To address this gap in the literature, we evaluated the hypothesis that stimulant use and binge drinking are prospectively associated with sub-optima

BACKGROUND: Binge alcohol drinking is a recognized cause of peripheral muscle damage, leading to increased creatine kinase levels. However, the potential role of electrolyte and osmolality changes in muscle damage remains unclear. This study investigates the prevalence of muscle damage in adolescents after binge drinking and its association with ethanol, potassium, sodium, calcium, and osmolality levels.
METHODS: A retrospective review of medical records from the Pediatric Emergency Department, Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Milan, Italy, was conducted. The study included 150 adole

BACKGROUND: Prenatal exposure to alcohol has a variety of morphologic and neurobehavioral consequences, yet more than 10% of women continue to drink during pregnancy, placing their offspring at risk for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). Identification of at-risk pregnancies has been difficult, in part, because the presence and severity of FASD are influenced by factors beyond the pattern of alcohol consumption. Establishing maternal characteristics, such as maternal age, that increase the risk of FASD is critical for targeted pregnancy intervention.
METHODS: We examined the moderating

BACKGROUND: Fetal binge alcohol exposure has been associated with neurobehavioral and cognitive symptoms. This study explored whether binge drinking mainly before recognition of pregnancy predicted high symptom scores on the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) in 5.5-year-old children.
METHODS: In a population-based, longitudinal study representative of pregnant women in Oslo, Norway, questionnaires were answered at 17 and 30 weeks of pregnancy, 6 months after term, and at child age 5.5 years (n = 1,116, constituting 66% of the original cohort). Logistic regression analyses identif

INTRODUCTION: The concept of "intestinal drinking" in this study refers to the continued absorption of alcohol in the gastrointestinal tract until adequate defecation occurs.
METHODS: A longitudinal observation of hangover symptoms and alcohol metabolites in healthy humans following binge drinking was conducted.
RESULTS: The hangover symptoms resulting from binge alcohol consumption were relieved by defecation. Following the defecation process, not only the blood ethanol levels, but also the concentrations of blood acetaldehyde, methanol, and iso-propanol, exhibited significant reductions.

Atrioventricular (AV) nodal conduction disorders occur when the AV conduction pathway is refractory due to functional or organic reasons, resulting in a delay or complete blockage of atrial impulses to the ventricles. One of the causes of nodal dysfunction includes chronic alcohol abuse and excessive binge drinking. We are presenting a case where a chronic alcoholic was binge drinking due to a loss of a close friend, which resulted in nodal dysfunction and multiple cardiac rhythms, including supraventricular bigeminy, sinus bradycardia, significant sinus pauses, and complete heart block.
