Myocardial infarction (MI) is a cardiovascular emergency and the leading cause of death worldwide. Inflammatory and immune responses are initiated immediately after MI, leading to myocardial death, scarring, and ventricular remodeling. Current therapeutic approaches emphasize early restoration of ischemic myocardial reperfusion, but there is no effective treatment for the pathological changes of infarction. Biomedical materials development has brought new hope for MI diagnosis and treatment. Biomedical materials, such as cardiac patches, hydrogels, nano biomaterials, and artificial blood vesse

Microbial infection accounts for many dental diseases and treatment failure. Therefore, the antibacterial properties of dental biomaterials are of great importance to the long-term results of treatment. Silver-based biomaterials (AgBMs) have been widely researched as antimicrobial materials with high efficiency and relatively low toxicity. AgBMs have a broad spectrum of antimicrobial properties, including penetration of microbial cell membranes, damage to genetic material, contact killing, and dysfunction of bacterial proteins and enzymes. In particular, advances in nanotechnology have improve

Structures and properties of isolated and crystalline poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) chains have been investigated. Ab initio molecular orbital (MO) calculations were conducted for methyl 6-acetoxyhexanoate (MAH), a model compound of PCL, to yield Gibbs free energies of all its existent conformers. Bond conformations of its seven bonds corresponding to the repeating unit of PCL were calculated therefrom; two C-C bonds close to the ester group show gauche preferences owing to intramolecular C-H⋯O attractions, and the other five prefer trans forms. 1H and 13C NMR vicinal coupling constants of 13C-la

Cyclic strain generated at the cell-material interface is critical for the engraftment of biomaterials. Mechanosensitive immune cells, macrophages regulate the host-material interaction immediately after implantation by priming the environment and remodeling ongoing regenerative processes. This study investigated the ability of mechanically active scaffolds to modulate macrophage function in vitro and in vivo. Remotely actuated magnetic scaffolds enhance the phenotype of murine classically activated (M1) macrophages, as shown by the increased expression of the M1 cell-surface marker CD86 and i

Biodegradable polymers have been widely used in tissue engineering with the potential to be replaced by regenerative tissue. While conventional bionic interfaces are designed to be implanted in living tissue and organs permanently, biocompatible and biodegradable electronic materials are now progressing a paradigm shift towards transient and regenerative bionic engineering. For example, biodegradable bioelectronics can monitor physiologies in a body, transiently rehabilitate disease symptoms, and seamlessly form regenerative interfaces from synthetic electronic devices to tissues by reducing i

Recent advances in the area of hydrogel synthesis have been directed to enhance the mechanical properties and biocompatibility, which are critical in their use as functional biomaterials. In this work, a green and facile method is introduced to produce a hydrogel based on xylan, a plant-based heteropolysaccharide, that is shown to successfully form hydrogen-bonded, semi-interpenetrating polymer networks with polyvinyl alcohol. Upon crosslinking with sodium trimetaphosphate, the obtained hydrogels achieved an exceptional compressive strength (up to 84.2 MPa at a fracture strain of 90 %), which

Over the past two decades in situ tissue engineering has emerged as a new approach where biomaterials are used to harness the body's own stem/progenitor cells to regenerate diseased or injured tissue. Immunomodulatory biomaterials are designed to promote a regenerative environment, recruit resident stem cells to diseased or injured tissue sites, and direct them towards tissue regeneration. This review explores advances gathered from in vitro and in vivo studies on in situ tissue regenerative therapies. Here we also examine the different ways this approach has been incorporated into biomaterial

Myocardial infarction is the first cause of worldwide mortality, with an increasing incidence also reported in developing countries. Over the past decades, preclinical research and clinical trials continually tested the efficacy of cellular and acellular-based treatments. However, none of them resulted in a drug or device currently used in combination with either percutaneous coronary intervention or coronary artery bypass graft. Inflammatory, proliferation and remodelling phases follow the ischaemic event in the myocardial tissue. Only recently, single-cell sequencing analyses provided insigh

Immunoengineering continues to revolutionize healthcare, generating new approaches for treating previously intractable diseases, particularly in regard to cancer immunotherapy. In joint diseases, such as osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA), biomaterials and anti-cytokine treatments have previously been at that forefront of therapeutic innovation. However, while many of the existing anti-cytokine treatments are successful for a subset of patients, these treatments can also pose severe risks, adverse events and off-target effects due to continuous delivery at high dosages or a lack

Neurotrophin-3 growth factor can improve cochlear neuron survival, and localized delivery of this protein to the round window membrane in the middle ear may be able to reverse sensorineural hearing loss. Thus, the goal of this work was to develop an injectable hydrogel delivery system that can allow localized release of neurotrophin-3 in a controlled and sustained manner. We identified a PEG hydrogel formulation that uses thiol-vinyl sulfone Michael addition for crosslinking. This injectable formulation provides elastic hydrogels with higher mechanical rigidity, better bio-adhesion and longer

Purpose: Ureteral stents are fraught with complications. Not much is known regarding what causes these issues. Studies suggested that discoloration of indwelling stents changes surface characteristics to promote stent-associated complications. Occasional stent discoloration has been observed; however, underlying mechanisms and potential material changes are unknown. In this study, we identify a potential mechanism for stent discoloration and characterize potential changes in stent surface characteristics and their impact on encrustation and bacterial colonization. Materials and Methods: Twenty

New nature-inspired and plant-derived p-hydroxycinnamate esters and p-hydroxycinnamate diesters provide excellent protection against UV radiation when incorporated into a matrix. Herein, an efficient and sustainable pathway is reported to graft these phenolic compounds onto cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) via click-type copper-catalyzed azide/alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) reaction. The successful grafting of the phenolic esters on CNC surface was evidenced by a range of chemical analyses, and the degrees of substitution (DS) of the CNC were found to depend on the structure of the phenolic ester g

This article reports enzyme-instructed self-assembly (EISA) of stereoisomers of pentapeptides as a simple approach for generating biocompatible supramolecular hydrogels as potential soft bionanomaterials. Peptide-based supramolecular hydrogels are emerging as a new type of biomaterials. The use of tyrosine phosphate offers a trigger for enzymatic hydrogelation, and the incorporation of D-amino acids can increase the proteolytic stability of peptides. This work compared four phosphorpeptides that are stereoisomers in terms of rate of dephosphorylation, proteolytic stability, and cell compatibil

Cardiovascular diseases plague human health because of the lack of transplantable small-diameter blood vessel (SDBV) grafts. Although expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) has the potential to be used as a biocompatible material for SDBV grafts, long-term patency is still the biggest challenge. As discussed in this paper, by virtue of a novel material formulation and a new and benign alcohol/water lubricating agent, biofunctionalized ePTFE blood vessel grafts aimed at providing long-term patency were fabricated. Compared to the most prevalent modification of PTFE, namely surface treatment,

Engineering synthetic scaffolds to repair and regenerate ruptured native tendon and ligament (T/L) tissues is a significant engineering challenge due to the need to satisfy both the unique biological and biomechanical properties of these tissues. Long-term clinical outcomes of synthetic scaffolds relying solely on high uniaxial tensile strength are poor with high rates of implant rupture and synovitis. Ideal biomaterials for T/L repair and regeneration need to possess the appropriate biological and biomechanical properties necessary for the successful repair and regeneration of ruptured tendon
