The Pseudomonas fluorescens complex contains at least eight phylogenetic groups and each of these includes several bacterial species sharing ecological and physiological traits. Pseudomonas chlororaphis classified in a separate group is represented by three different subspecies that show distinctive traits exploitable for phytostimulation and biocontrol of phytopathogens. The high level of microbial competitiveness in soil as well as the effectiveness in controlling several plant pathogens and pests can be related to the P. chlororaphis ability to implement different stimulating and toxic mech

Given the continued high prevalence of mosquito-transmitted diseases, there is a clear need to develop novel disease and vector control strategies. Biopesticides of microbial origin represent a promising source of new approaches to target disease-transmitting mosquito populations. Here, we describe the development and characterization of a novel mosquito biopesticide, derived from an air-dried, nonlive preparation of the bacterium Chromobacterium sp. Panama (family: Neisseriaceae). This preparation rapidly and effectively kills the larvae of prominent mosquito vectors, including the dengue and

Innovation toward ecofriendly plant protection products compatible with sustainable agriculture and healthy food is today strongly encouraged. Here, we assessed the biocontrol activity of three cyclic lipopeptides from Bacillus subtilis (mycosubtilin, M; surfactin, S; fengycin, F) and two mixtures (M + S and M + S + F) on wheat against Zymoseptoria tritici, the main pathogen on this crop. Foliar application of these biomolecules at a 100-mg L-1 concentration on the wheat cultivars Dinosor and Alixan, 2 days before fungal inoculation, provided significant reductions of disease severity. The bes

Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPNs) are a promising alternative to integrated control in many fruit pests. Few studies were made on the relationship of Anastrepha fraterculus natural population with native EPNs population and other biotic and abiotic factors. The aim of this work was to verify the occurrence of endemic nematodes in an apple orchard, concerning environmental conditions and technical procedure, and access isolates virulence to A. fraterculus larvae. The experiment was conducted during a year taking monthly soil samples from an apple orchard, with and without fallen fruits just abo

Burkholderia pseudomallei is a Tier 1 select agent and potential bioweapon. Given it is potential to cause a lethal respiratory disease, research with fully virulent B. pseudomallei is conducted in Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) laboratory spaces. The logistical, financial, and administrative burden of Tier 1 select agent BSL-3 research has created an interest in mitigating such burdens through the use of either attenuated B. pseudomallei strains at BSL-2, or research with surrogate species, such as Burkholderia thailandensis. Previously, attenuated B. pseudomallei auxotroph mutants (asd and purM)

Fungal endophytes are important sources of bioactive secondary metabolites. The genus Xylaria Hill (ex Schrank, 1789, Xylariaceae) comprises various endophytic species associated to both vascular and non vascular plants. The secondary metabolites produced by Xylaria species include a variety of volatile and non-volatile compounds. Examples of the former are sesquiterpenoids, esters, and alcohols, among others; and of the latter we find terpenoids, cytochalasins, mellein, alkaloids, polyketides, and aromatic compounds. Some of these metabolites have shown potential activity as herbicides, fungi

Gliotoxin (GT) is the most important epidithiodioxopiperazine (ETP)-type fungal toxin. GT was originally isolated from Trichoderma species as an antibiotic substance involved in biological control of plant pathogenic fungi. A few isolates of GT-producing Trichoderma virens are commercially marketed for biological control and widely used in agriculture. Furthermore, GT is long known as an immunosuppressive agent and also reported to have anti-tumour properties. However, recent publications suggest that GT is a virulence determinant of the human pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus. This compound is t

Human schistosomiasis is a common parasitic disease endemic in many tropical and subtropical countries. One barrier to achieving long-term control of this disease has been re-infection of treated patients when they swim, bathe, or wade in surface fresh water infested with snails that harbor and release larval parasites. Because some snail species are obligate intermediate hosts of schistosome parasites, removing snails may reduce parasitic larvae in the water, reducing re-infection risk. Here, we evaluate the potential for snail control by predatory freshwater prawns, Macrobrachium rosenbergii

Ralstonia solanacearum species complex (RSSC) is a globally destructive plant pathogen with high ecological persistence, making bacterial wilt management a long-standing challenge. In this study, we identified Burkholderia arboris BB417 as a potent biocontrol agent and systematically elucidated its multilevel antagonistic mechanisms against RSSC. BB417 exhibited broad-spectrum inhibition against diverse RSSC strains and achieved greenhouse control efficacy comparable to chemical pesticides within the 10-day observation period, while also promoting plant growth through nitrogen fixation, phosph

Tomato black spot disease, caused by the fungus Alternaria alternata, leads to plant wilting and chlorosis and results in sunken, black lesions on harvested fruit, thereby causing significant economic losses in the tomato industry. To mitigate issues related to environmental contamination and the emergence of resistant pathogens, this study investigated a high-efficacy, low-toxicity biocontrol strategy. The marine-derived fungus Q8-1 inhibited the growth of A. alternata by up to 87.04 %. Based on morphological features and ITS rDNA sequencing, the strain was identified as Epicoccum nigrum. Gen

Research on vector control with bioinsecticides is still being done to reduce the negative impacts of employing pesticides. Reduced insecticide use should prevent mosquitoes from harming the environment and from developing resistance to the active components in insecticides. Botanical insecticides are derived from plants that have bioactive compounds (toxic to insects) that readily break down in the environment, do not pollute the ecosystem, and are more selective and safer than conventional pesticides. The point of this study is to find out what happens to Ae. aegypti when ethyl acetate and e

Insights into the application of endophytic bacilli in sustainable agricultural practices have opened up new avenues for the inhibition of soil-borne pathogens and the improvement of plant health. Bacillus subtilis K1, an endophytic bacterium originally isolated from aerial roots of Ficus benghalensis is a potential biocontrol agent secreting a mixture of surfactins, iturins and fengycins. The current study extends the characterization of this bacterium through genomic and comparative genomics approaches. The sequencing of the bacterial genome at Illumina MiSeq platform revealed that it posses

BACKGROUND: Spear®-T sold as a contact foliar spray for the control of glasshouse pests such as aphids, thrips, spider mites and whiteflies, contains the recombinant spider venom peptide GS-ω/κ-HxTx-Hv1h (named as GS-ω/κ-HxTx-Hv1a by Vestaron) as the active ingredient. Here we investigate whether fusion of the peptide to snowdrop lectin, (Galanthus nivalis agglutinin; GNA) enhances the efficacy of this venom peptide towards aphid pests.
RESULTS: Recombinant GS-ω/κ-HxTx-Hv1h (HxTx-Hv1h) and an HxTx-Hv1h/GNA fusion protein were produced using the yeast Pichia pastoris. Purified proteins showed

Citrus fruits are the most produced fruits in the world, but they are threatened by several pathogens, including the fungus Phyllosticta citricarpa, the causal agent of citrus black spot (CBS). The fungus affects most citrus species and the infection results in economic losses in citrus-producing areas. This disease causes the aesthetic depreciation of fresh fruit, impairing its commercialization. As an alternative to the use of synthetic fungicides to control the pathogen, the biological control, using bacteria of the genus Bacillus, is highlighted. Such microorganisms enable biocontrol by th

Erythritol, an artificial sweetener, has shown promise as an organic, human-safe insecticide. Recently, erythritol applications were shown to be successful at controlling pear psylla (Cacopsylla pyricola (Förster)) (Hempitera: Psyllidae), the most important pest of pear in the Pacific Northwest, USA. Twospotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch) (Trombidiformes: Tetranychidae) and pear rust mite (Epitrimerus pyri (Nalepa)) (Trombidiformes: Eriophyidae) can also be highly damaging pear pests. Their common natural enemy, Galendromus occidentalis (Nesbitt) (Mesostigmata: Phytoseiidae), can pr

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal parasites like nematodes are associated with significant impacts on animal health, causing poor growth rates, diseases and even death. Traditional parasite control includes the use of anthelmintic drugs, albeit being associated with drug resistance and ecotoxicity. In the last decade, biological control of parasites using nematophagous or predatory fungi has been increasingly studied, although systematic evidence of its efficacy is still lacking. The aim of this work was to assess the evidence of efficacy of nematophagous fungi in the control of nematodes and other

The freshwater snail Bithynia siamensis goniomphalos serves as the first intermediate host of liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini, a foodborne parasite, of which human infection has persisted in Southeast Asia for decades. The snail Filopaludina martensi martensi has been proposed as a biological control agent against B.s. goniomphalos, but knowledge on the snail ecology and population dynamics between the two species remains rudimentary. This study investigated selected abiotic and biotic factors influencing the distribution and abundance of B.s. goniomphalos and F.m. martensi. Water quality,

Rodent damage significantly affects agriculture around the world. Rodenticides can sometimes control pests, but they are costly, may cause secondary poisoning to nontarget wildlife, and can become less efficient over time due to bait shyness and resistance. Using wildlife as biological pest control agents, particularly barn owls (Tyto spp.), has been suggested as an alternative. Barn owl nest boxes and hunting perches have been added to increase predator pressure, yet few studies have examined their effectiveness. We conducted a field study in forty-five 10 × 10 m2 plots to compare three treat

INTRODUCTION: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system mediated by antibodies targeting the aquaporin-4 (AQP4) water channel expressed on astrocytes. The binding of specific antibodies to AQP4 causes complement-dependent cytotoxicity, leading to inflammation and demyelination. Several recent phase 2 and 3 randomized placebo-controlled trials showed the efficacy and safety of monoclonal antibody therapies targeting B-cells, interleukin-6 receptor, and complement.
AREAS COVERED: Current biologic treatments for NMOSD and developments t
