A review of neurophysiological testing.

The rapid advances in the technology of, and accumulation of pertinent data in, electrophysiological testing has increased exponentially in the past decade. This is attributable to continued advances in computer technology, biomedical engineering, and now the coregistration of the electrophysiological data with neuroimaging results. Knowledge of normal function and electrophysiological response at rest or on stimulation of the central and peripheral nervous systems is important to the neurosurgeon. Only by a basic understanding of normal and abnormal recordings may diagnoses and localizations

Development of near-infrared fluorescent probes with AIE properties and their application in the detection and imaging of CN- in environmental water samples and multiple species (zebrafish/cells/plants).

Cyanide ions (CN-) are highly toxic pollutants that are widely present in industrial wastewater and the environment, posing a serious threat to ecosystems and human health. The development of highly sensitive and selective CN- detection technologies is an urgent need in environmental monitoring and biomedical fields. In this study, we designed and synthesized a near-infrared fluorescent probe, OTB, based on the aggregation-induced emission (AIE) mechanism. It features a methoxy-modified triphenylamine as the fluorescent moiety and incorporates a benzothiazole structure, achieving an ultra-larg

Are carbon nanotubes a natural solution? Applications in biology and medicine.

Carbon nanotubes and materials based on carbon nanotubes have many perceived applications in the field of biomedicine. Several highly promising examples have been highlighted in the literature, ranging from their use as growth substrates or tissue scaffolds to acting as intracellular transporters for various therapeutic and diagnostic agents. In addition, carbon nanotubes have a strong optical absorption in the near-infrared region (in which tissue is transparent), which enables their use for biological imaging applications and photothermal ablation of tumors. Although these advances are poten

Immunoglobulin knockout chickens via efficient homologous recombination in primordial germ cells.

Gene targeting by homologous recombination or by sequence-specific nucleases allows the precise modification of genomes and genes to elucidate their functions. Although gene targeting has been used extensively to modify the genomes of mammals, fish, and amphibians, a targeting technology has not been available for the avian genome. Many of the principles of humoral immunity were discovered in chickens, yet the lack of gene targeting technologies in birds has limited biomedical research using this species. Here we describe targeting the joining (J) gene segment of the chicken Ig heavy chain gen

Ablative Technologies for Thyroid Nodules: A Health Technology Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Thyroid nodules are common, but most are benign and do not require treatment. However, intervention is warranted in people who experience compressive symptoms or hyperthyroidism, or based on risk of malignancy. Ablative technologies may offer a minimally invasive option for those in whom surgery is being considered. We conducted a health technology assessment of ablative technologies for adults with symptomatic benign thyroid nodules, cystic thyroid nodules, autonomously functioning thyroid nodules (AFTNs), or small, low-risk papillary thyroid cancer, which included an evaluation o

Methods and evidence in economic evaluations of modern radiotherapy: a systematic mapping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Modern radiotherapy modalities have increased treatment precision and clinical effectiveness. However, the economic evidence that underpins their adoption is highly heterogeneous, with substantial variation in costing methods, data sources, analytic designs (trial-based, real-world/observational and decision-analytic modelling), perspectives and the treatment of uncertainty. We propose a systematic mapping review to characterise the peer-reviewed evidence base and identify methodological gaps relevant to health technology assessment and policy-making. This systematic mapping revi

Plasma-Based Comprehensive Genomic Profiling DNA Assays for Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer: A Health Technology Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common type of lung cancer, accounting for about 85% of all lung cancer cases. While some cases of NSCLC with actionable genomic alterations in the tumour cells may respond to standard therapies, they often show greater improvement with targeted therapies. The current standard of care in Ontario involves testing for actionable genomic alterations using both DNA and RNA panels via tissue testing alone. However, liquid biopsy testing may complement tissue testing by addressing some of its limitations. We conducted a health technology ass

In Situ Synthesis and Self-Assembly of Peptide-PEG Conjugates: A Facile Method for the Construction of Fibrous Hydrogels.

Peptide-based hydrogels have gained considerable attention as a compelling platform for various biomedical applications in recent years. Their attractiveness stems from their ability to seamlessly integrate diverse properties, such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, easily adjustable hydrophilicity/hydrophobicity, and other functionalities. However, a significant drawback is that most of the functional self-assembling peptides cannot form robust hydrogels suitable for biological applications. In this study, we present the synthesis of novel peptide-PEG conjugates and explore their comprehe

Evaluating discrete choice experiment willingness to pay [DCE-WTP] analysis and relative social willingness to pay [RS-WTP] analysis in a health technology assessment of a treatment for an ultra-rare childhood disease [CLN2].

BACKGROUND: Conventional cost-effectiveness analysis [CEA] using cost per QALY thresholds may counteract other incentives introduced to foster development of treatments for rare and ultra-rare diseases. Therefore, alternative economic evaluation methods were explored, namely Discrete Choice Experiment Willingness to Pay (DCE-WTP) and Relative Social Willingness to Pay (RS-WTP), to value interventions for an ultra-rare childhood disease, Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis type 2 (CLN2). RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Treatment for CLN2 was valued from a citizen's ('social') perspective using DCE-WTP

Transcatheter Valve-in-Valve Implantation for Degenerated Mitral or Tricuspid Bioprosthetic Valves: A Heath Technology Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Bioprosthetic valves used to treat mitral or tricuspid valve disease can be expected to deteriorate and eventually fail after 10 to 15 years. For patients who are considered inoperable or high-risk for surgery, medical management (i.e., drug therapy, the current standard of care in Ontario) does not significantly alter the course of valvular heart disease or improve degenerated bioprosthetic valves. An alternative for these patients is transcatheter mitral or tricuspid valve-in-valve implantation (TMViV or TTViV). We conducted a health technology assessment of transcatheter valve-i

Volume Balance in Chronic Kidney Disease: Evaluation Methodologies and Innovation Opportunities.

BACKGROUND: Patients affected by chronic kidney disease are at a risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Body fluids unbalance is one of the main characteristics of this condition, as fluid overload is highly prevalent in patients affected by the cardiorenal syndrome. SUMMARY: We describe the state of the art and new insights into body volume evaluation. The mechanisms behind fluid balance are often complex, mainly because of the interplay of multiple regulatory systems. Consequently, its management may be challenging in clinical practice and even more so out-of-hospital. Availability
