Additive cardiotoxicity of a bisphenol mixture in zebrafish embryos: The involvement of calcium channel and pump.

Bisphenol A (BPA) and its analogs, such as bisphenol F (BPF), bisphenol AF (BPAF), and bisphenol B (BPB), are often simultaneously detected in environmental and human specimens. Thus, assessing the toxicity of bisphenol (BP) mixtures is more relevant than assessing that of each BP type. Here, we found that BPs, individually or in a mixture, concentration-dependently and additively increased the mortality of zebrafish embryos (ZFEs) at 96 h post fertilization (hpf) and induced bradycardia (i.e., reduced heart rate) at 48 hpf, indicating their cardiotoxic potency. BPAF was the most potent, follo

Toxic effects of bisphenol AF on the embryonic development of marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma).

Bisphenol AF (BPAF), an emerging environmental endocrine disruptor, has been detected in surface waters worldwide and has adverse effects on aquatic organisms. The accumulation of BPAF in oceans and its potential toxic effect on marine organisms are important concerns. In this study, the effects of BPAF (10, 100, 1, and 5 mg/L) on marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) were evaluated, including effects on the survival rate, heart rate, hatchability, morphology, and gene expression in embryos. The survival rate of marine medaka embryos was significantly lower after treatment with 5 mg/L BPAF than i

Structure-based developmental toxicity and ASD-phenotypes of bisphenol A analogues in embryonic zebrafish.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that has become more prevalent in recent years. Environmental endocrine disruptor bisphenol A (BPA) has been linked to ASD. BPA analogues (BPs) are structure-modified substitutes widely used as safer alternatives in consumer products, yet few studies have explored the developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) of BPA analogues. In the present study, we used the larval zebrafish model to assess the DNT effects of BPA and its analogues. Our results showed that many BPA analogues are more toxic than BPA in the embryonic zebrafish assay regard

Increased bisphenol A levels in Thai children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) in children and adolescents continues to increase worldwide. The reason for this is unclear. In addition to the role of genetics, bisphenol A (BPA) has been investigated as a possible causal factor for T1DM. This study aimed to determine the correlation between urinary BPA levels and T1DM in Thai children and adolescents. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in T1DM patients who were followed at the endocrinology clinic at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital from December 2018 to December 2019 and age-matched healthy cont

Bisphenol A (BPA) Leading to Obesity and Cardiovascular Complications: A Compilation of Current In Vivo Study.

BPA is one of the most common endocrine disruptors that is widely being manufactured daily nationwide. Although scientific evidence supports claims of negative effects of BPA on humans, there is also evidence suggesting that a low level of BPA is safe. However, numerous in vivo trials contraindicate with this claim and there is a high possibility of BPA exposure could lead to obesity. It has been speculated that this does not stop with the exposed subjects only, but may also cause transgenerational effects. Direct disruption of endocrine regulation, neuroimmune and signaling pathways, as well

Bisphenol A (BPA) induces apoptosis of mouse Leydig cells via oxidative stress.

As one of the most frequently produced synthetic compounds worldwide, bisphenol A (BPA) has been widely used in many kinds of products such as appliances, housewares, and beverage cans. BPA has been shown to cause damage to male reproductive system; however, the potential mechanism remains to be investigated. In the present study, BPA exposure decreased the testis and epididymis coefficient, caused a disintegration of germinal epithelium, decreased the density and motility of sperm in the epididymis tissue, and increased the number of abnormal sperm morphology, which indicated that BPA exposur

Tetramethyl bisphenol a inhibits leydig cell function in late puberty by inducing ferroptosis.

Tetramethyl bisphenol A (TMBPA) is a commonly used bisphenol analog, used as a fire retardant. However, whether it inhibits the function of Leydig cells in late puberty remains unclear. In this study, 35-day-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were gavaged with 0, 10, 100, and 200 mg/kg body weight TMBPA for 21 days. TMBPA significantly reduced serum testosterone levels at 10 mg/kg and higher doses without altering serum luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone levels. TMBPA significantly increased serum iron concentraion while reducing the ratio of serum glutathione (GSH) and GSH/GSSG (o

Application of aerobic denitrifier for simultaneous removal of nitrogen, zinc, and bisphenol A from wastewater.

High concentrations of heavy metals and other pollutants affect microbial activity in the wastewater treatment system and impede biological denitrification process. In this study, a novel Zn(II)-resistant aerobic denitrifier (Pseudomonas stutzeri KY-37) was isolated with potential in Bisphenol A (BPA) biodegradation and removal. The capability of this denitrifier in removing nitrogen, zinc, and BPA was tested. Using 56 mg/L nitrate as the sole nitrogen source, its removal efficiency achieved 98.5% in 12 h. This novel denitrifier had a strong auto-aggregation (maximum 65.8%), a high hydrophobic

[Mechanisms of Cancer Malignancy Elicited by Environmental Chemicals: Analysis Focusing on Cadmium and Bisphenol A].

Humans are continually exposed to various chemicals in the environment. Some of these environmental chemicals not only induce malignant transformation but also enhance the malignant potential of the cancer. In this review, the author summarizes the findings on the effects of environmental chemicals on cancer with a focus on inorganic cadmium (Cd) and organic bisphenol A (BPA). Cd, an established human carcinogen, enhances the invasive capacity of rat liver TRL 1215 cells during malignant transformation by downregulating apolipoprotein E (ApoE), a suppressor of cell invasion, via induction of D

Evaluation of post-adolescence exposure to bisphenol A on reproductive outcomes of male rodent models.

The effect of post-adolescence bisphenol A (BPA) exposure on the reproductive system is not well-defined. We therefore performed this meta-analysis to elucidate the associations between post-adolescence BPA exposure and reproductive-related outcomes. A search was performed on the PubMed, EMBASE, and Web of science databases to identify relevant literature. The standardized mean differences (SMDs) and the 95 % confidence intervals (CIs) were measured by fixed-effects or random-effects models. Publication bias was assessed using funnel plots and Egger's regression test. A total of 40 studies wer

The internal exposure of bisphenol analogues in South China adults and the associated health risks.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is widely applied in industrial products and household products, leading to ubiquitous occurrences in environmental and biological samples. However, knowledge on human internal exposure to bisphenol analogues remains limited. Our study determined nine bisphenol analogues in urine samples collected from 1168 South China adults. BPA and bisphenol F (BPF) exhibited the highest detection frequencies in urine, i.e., 99.4% and 74.6%, respectively. BPA dominated over other analogues, with a median concentration of 1.74 μg/L, while BPF had a median concentration of 0.08 μg/L. Signifi

Bisphenol a Interferes with Uterine Artery Features and Impairs Rat Feto-Placental Growth.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a widespread environmental contaminant, found in human fluids and tissues. Maternal BPA exposure is associated with alterations in pregnancy outcomes. Because maternal uterine circulation plays a crucial role in normal placenta and fetal growth, we hypothesized that BPA compromises the function of uterine arteries (UAs) and fetoplacental development. Female rats were orally administered with BPA (2.5, 25 and 250 µg/kg/day) or with its vehicle (ethanol) for 30 days before pregnancy and during the first 20 days of pregnancy. To compare the effect of BPA in the reproductive v
