Fear of Blindness in Patients Undergoing Cataract Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Fear is a negative emotion induced by the threat of danger, pain and harm. Cataract surgery is one of the most performed surgeri … aract surgery. We also examined what the greatest fear during the cataract surgery was. The fear of blindness was compared with other life fears such as cancer, memory loss, AIDS, stroke and heart attack. The presence of fear was compared in patients having had previous cataract surgery with those undergoing their first cataract surgery. Including criteria …

Night Blindness in a Healthy Middle-Class Child.

How do you clinically approach a night-blind child in a vegetarian family, with no obvious dystrophy and no obvious malnutrition? This case reviews some of the issues, and it reminds us of some of the cautions. [Ophthalmic Surg Lasers Imaging Retina. 2020;51:286-288.].

[Autism spectrum symptoms in children with congenital blindness].

Autism spectrum symptoms in children with congenital blindness Abstract. Objective: Previous studies reported increased rates of autistic symptoms in children with impaired visual abilities (IV). However, the application of existing screening questionnaires for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) proved problematic, as intact visual abilities are typically required. The current study examines the general applicability of three autism-screening questionnaires in children with congenital blindness. Methods: Autistic symptoms were assessed in 15 children with congenital blindness, 15 children with AS…

Therapeutic avenues for hereditary forms of retinal blindness.

Hereditary retinal diseases, known as retinal degenerations or dystrophies, are a large group of inherited eye disorders resulting in irreversible visual loss and blindness. They develop due to mutations in one or more genes that lead to the death of the retinal photoreceptor cells. Till date, mutations in over 200 genes are known to be associated with all different forms of retinal disorders. The enormous genetic heterogeneity of this group of diseases has posedmany challenges in understanding the mechanisms of disease and in developing suitable therapies. Therapeutic avenues that are being i…

Transient monocular blindness: Vascular causes and differential diagnoses.

Transient monocular blindness is an acute episode of ischemic origin in which one eye has profound visual loss, followed by full recovery within one hour. Transient monocular blindness most often occurs in the setting of retinal ischemia secondary to carotid embolism, but other mechanisms have been reported, including thrombosis (most often in the setting of giant cell arteritis), hemodynamic disorders (secondary to severe carotid stenosis), or vasospasm. Transient monocular blindness is considered a transient ischemic attack originating in the carotid arteries, and must be managed the same as…

Risk of perimetric blindness among juvenile glaucoma patients.

AIM: To estimate rates of progression and to asssess the projected lifetime risk of blindness among treated eyes of juvenile-onset primary open glaucoma (JOAG) patients. METHODS: Rates of change of the visual field index of JOAG patients (diagnosed between the age of 10-40 years), with at least 5 year follow up, were used to estimate the lifetime risk of perimetric blindness. Both the eyes of patients were included in the analysis wherever possible. Average life expectancy of the population was used to calculate the lifetime risk of perimetric blindness. A regression analysis of factors contr…

Post-anesthetic cortical blindness in cats: twenty cases.

The medical records of 20 cats with post-anesthetic cortical blindness were reviewed. Information collected included signalment and health status, reason for anesthesia, anesthetic protocols and adverse events, post-anesthetic visual and neurological abnormalities, clinical outcome, and risk factors. The vascular anatomy of the cat brain was reviewed by cadaver dissections. Thirteen cats were anaesthetised for dentistry, four for endoscopy, two for neutering procedures and one for urethral obstruction. A mouth gag was used in 16/20 cats. Three cats had had cardiac arrest, whereas in the remain…

Cortical blindness in a child with acute glomerulonephritis.

The association between hypertensive encephalopathy and cortical blindness in children with acute glomerulonephritis is extremely rare. We report the case of a 9-year old girl who presented with headache, seizures, altered sensorium, hematuria, and transient cortical blindness as a complication of hypertensive encephalopathy which showed complete reversal following normalization of blood pressure and an underlying post-infectious acute glomerulonephritis was revealed.

Neural correlates of olfactory processing in congenital blindness.

Adaptive neuroplastic changes have been well documented in congenitally blind individuals for the processing of tactile and auditory informa … ent knowledge about the supramodal function of the visually deprived occipital cortex in congenital blindness, linking it also to olfactory processing in addition to tactile and auditory processing.

Telemedicine model to prevent blindness from familial glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: To develop, implement and evaluate a telemedicine model to reduce glaucoma blindness through the early detection of undiagnosed glaucoma in high-risk individuals. DESIGN: Prospective study, private ophthalmology practice and public outpatient clinics in Tasmania. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred and thirty-three individuals with primary open-angle glaucoma were invited to enrol their first-degree relatives (FDRs) to undergo an eye examination. Within the study period, 211 FDRs were available for examination. METHODS: A registered nurse was trained to perform the required assessments. C…

Osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis for end-stage cornea blindness.

We report the first case of Osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (OOKP) who successfully underwent surgery in Malaysia following a grade 4 (severe) chemical injury in both eyes in 2006. The patient's left eye was eviscerated and his right eye underwent penetrating keratoplasty. However, the corneal graft failed and became opaque. His right eye could only perceive light. The OOKP was offered to him hoping to recover some functional vision. He underwent a 2-stage surgery to implant the OOKP into his right eye. However, 2 months post-operation, he developed vitreous haemorrhage. A successful pars plana

Human olfaction: a constant state of change-blindness.

Paradoxically, although humans have a superb sense of smell, they don't trust their nose. Furthermore, although human odorant detection thre … If similar temporal breaks are artificially introduced to vision and audition, they induce "change blindness", a loss of attentional capture that results in a lack of awareness to change. Whereas "change blindness" is an aberration of vision and audition, the long inter-sniff-interval renders "change anosmia" the norm in human olfaction. Therefore, attenti …

[Blindness caused by retrobulbar hemorrhage (orbital compartment syndrome)].

In the author's department, 5 patients developed retrobulbar hemorrhage from the 199 patients with midface fractures, between August 2007 and March 2010 (2.5%). 4 of these patients became irreversibly blind on the affected eye. With timely treatment, one patient avoided blindness. The author presents a retrospective analysis of the patients from different departments with midface/orbital fractures and blindness. Bleeding and oedema behind the eyeball due to midface/orbital fractures in the relatively non-expandable orbit results a quick elevation of orbital pressure and consequently diminished…
