Analysis of mean platelet volume and red blood cell distribution width in recurrent epistaxis.

OBJECTIVES: Recurrent epistaxis is one of the most common causes of emergency department visits. Although several localized and systemic conditions has been described, the exact cause is unknown in the majority of cases. In our study, we aimed to determine the effect of mean platelet volume (MPV) and red blood cell distribution width (RDW) levels on recurrent epistaxis. METHOD: One hundred and thirty six patients with recurrent epistaxis and 170 healthy cases as control group were included in the study. Demographic data, vital signs and the results of complete blood counts were recorded. The

Quantitation of salbutamol using micro-volume blood sampling - applications to exacerbations of pediatric asthma.

OBJECTIVES: A novel gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) method has been developed to quantify salbutamol in micro-volumes (10 µL) of blood. A potential application is paediatric therapeutic dose monitoring (TDM) in acute severe asthma. METHODS: At presentation, the children receive multiple doses of salbutamol (inhaled, nebulised and occasionally intravenous) but it is difficult to distinguish children who do not respond to treatment because of inadequate concentrations from those with toxicity, as symptoms are similar. A comparison was made between traditional dried blood spots (DBS

Stenosis or hyperperfusion in sickle cell disease--ultrasound assessment of cerebral blood flow volume.

Increased blood flow velocity (BFV) in basal cerebral arteries measured by transcranial color-coded sonography (TCCS) is a stroke risk factor in sickle cell disease (SCD). Raised BFV may be caused by vessel narrowing or by hyperperfusion. In 44 SCD patients and 14 controls, intracranial arterial BFVs and global cerebral blood flow (CBF) were analyzed by TCCS and extracranial duplex ultrasound, respectively. Magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance angiography were performed in all patients with pathologic intracranial BFV rise. Intracranial BFVs and CBF in SCD were significantly highe

Minimal volume regulation after shrinkage of red blood cells from five species of reptiles.

Red blood cells (RBCs) from most vertebrates restore volume upon hypertonic shrinkage and the mechanisms underlying this regulatory volume increase (RVI) have been studied extensively in these cells. Despite the phylogenetically interesting position of reptiles, very little is known about their red cell function. The present study demonstrates that oxygenated RBCs in all major groups of reptiles exhibit no or a very reduced RVI upon approximately 25% calculated hyperosmotic shrinkage. Thus, RBCs from the snakes Crotalus durissus and Python regius, the turtle Trachemys scripta and the alligator

Systolic arterial pressure variability reflects circulating blood volume alterations in hemorrhagic shock in rabbits.

Both the high-frequency component of systolic arterial pressure variability and systolic pressure variation (SPV) have been indicated to be strongly affected by respiratory effect and sensitively reflect circulating blood volume (CBV). We attempted to determine the best means reflecting CBV from various parameters using power spectrum analyses of systolic arterial pressure variability (PSSAPV) and heart rate variability (PSHRV), SPV, and pulse pressure variation during graded hemorrhaging and fluid resuscitation. Under isoflurane anesthesia and mechanical ventilation, rabbits in group S (n = 6…

Blood volume and haemoglobin oxygen content changes in human bone marrow during orthostatic stress.

The interest in, and the need for effective measures to be used in screening, diagnosis, and the follow-up of skeletal pathologies is growing markedly. This paper proposes a completely new and non-invasive technique allowing the study of the human tibia bone marrow (BM) haemodynamics with a time resolution of 1 s. The technique, based on near infrared spectroscopy, is sensitive enough to allow the detection of BM blood volume and/or oxygen saturation changes during orthostatic variations imposed by a tilt bed. An increase in the slope of the bed of 15 degrees is sufficient to detect this pheno…

Decreased lung capillary blood volume post-exercise is compensated by increased membrane diffusing capacity.

The diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide (DLCO) decreases to below the pre-exercise value in the hours following a bout of intense exercise. Two mechanisms have been proposed: (1) development of pulmonary oedema and (2) redistribution of central blood volume to peripheral muscles causing a reduction in pulmonary capillary blood volume ( V(c)). In the present study DLCO, V(c) and the membrane diffusing capacity ( D(m)) were measured in nine healthy females using a rebreathing method, in contrast to the single breath technique employed in previous studies. DLCO, V(c) and D(m) were …

Cerebral blood volume measurements by rapid contrast infusion and T2*-weighted echo planar MRI.

Cerebral blood volume (CBV) provides information complementary to that of cerebral blood flow in cerebral ischemia, tumors, and other conditions. We have developed an alternative theory and method for measuring CBV based on dynamic imaging by MRI or CT during a short contrast infusion. This method avoids several limitations of traditional approaches that involve waiting for steady state or measuring the area under the curve (AUC) during bolus contrast injection. Anesthetized dogs were studied by T2*-weighted echo planar imaging during gadolinium-DTPA infusions lasting 30-60 sec. CBV was calcul…

A non-invasive continuous method of measuring blood volume during haemodialysis using optical techniques.

Hypotension during haemodialysis and fluid overload between treatments are major problems for haemodialysis patients. Clinical means of assessing hydration state can be relatively imprecise. We describe a non-invasive method of measuring absolute blood volume (BV) during a mock in vitro haemodialysis session which adds objective information to that assessment. As fluid is removed by ultrafiltration, haemoglobin concentration [Hb] rises proportionately with the fall in BV. An optical monitor clamped across the transparent dialysis tubing gives a continuous readout of near infra-red light transm…

Sodium transport during the natriuresis of volume expansion; a study using peripheral blood leucocytes.

1. Leucocyte sodium transport was investigated as a possible assay for the small molecular weight natriuretic material isolated from the urine of normal subjects who had undergone volume expansion by saline infusion. 2. This fraction (fraction four or FIV), inhibitory to sodium transport in several other assays, was also found to inhibit leucocyte sodium transport. 3. FIV isolated from the urine of five normal subjects undergoing the natriuresis of mineralocorticoid 'escape' was also found to be inhibitory to leucocyte sodium transport. 4. Leucocytes isolated from the blood of the same subject

Impact of Blood Volume on Pathogen Detection and Time to Positivity in Paediatric Blood Cultures Using BACT/ALERT 3D Automated Systems.

Background Bloodstream infections (BSIs) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in paediatric populations. Early and accurate pathogen detection is crucial for prompt therapy. Blood volume is a key factor influencing culture sensitivity and time to positivity (TTP). This study evaluated the impact of blood volume on microbial recovery and TTP in paediatric blood cultures using the BACT/ALERT 3D automated system (bioMérieux, Marcy-l'Étoile, France). Methods In this prospective study (April 2023-September 2024), 160 paediatric blood culture bottles were analysed. Blood volume was calculate…

Hemolysis in a Novel Centrifugal Blood Pump With Low Priming Volume: In Vitro Comparative Study Using Human Blood and Numerical Analysis.

Extracorporeal circulation (ECC) procedures, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), provide essential support for critically ill patients, but complications such as hemolysis and thromboembolic events remain significant concerns. This study evaluates the hemocompatibility of the CBM LifeMotion centrifugal ECMO pump, designed with a low priming volume and shrouded impeller, comparing its performance to three commercially available pumps (Maquet, Sorin, and Novalung). Human blood was used in a simulated ECC model, following American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) testing

Experimental subarachnoid hemorrhage: subarachnoid blood volume, mortality rate, neuronal death, cerebral blood flow, and perfusion pressure in three different rat models.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate which of three subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) models is the most suitable for studies of pathological and pathophysiological processes after SAH. METHODS: SAH was induced in rats via intracranial endovascular perforation (perforation model), blood injection into the cisterna magna (300 microl), or blood injection into the prechiasmatic cistern (200 microl). The subarachnoid blood volume was quantitatively measured. Cerebral blood flow (CBF) (as assessed with laser Doppler flowmetry), intracranial pressure, and mean arterial blood pressure were recorded for 90 minutes …

An experimental study of acute subarachnoid haemorrhage in baboons: changes in cerebral blood volume, blood flow, electrical activity and water content.

Subarachnoid haemorrhage following transection of the posterior artery was produced in 10 baboons. Cerebral blood volume (CBV) decreased transiently after subarachnoid haemorrhage. Two basic patterns of intracranial pressure (ICP) were observed; in one ICP returned to normal but in the other it remained elevated. In this latter group four out of five animals showed an increase in CBV above the original level. There were delays in sensory conduction (measured using somatosensory evoked potentials) bilaterally; those on the contralateral side to the bleed were correlated with ICP whereas other f…

The effect of cardiopulmonary bypass prime solution volume on blood transfusion: how do perfusionists manage fluid and what is the optimal prime solution volume?

INTRODUCTION: During cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB), adequate prime solution allows pre-treatment of the tubing line, oxygenator and blood pump, evacuation of air from the arterial conduit, and appropriate blood dilution. However, the volume of prime solution may also affect the blood transfusion rate. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the effect of different volumes of CPB prime solution used in two different cardiac surgery centres on blood transfusion rate, as well as the relationship between the volume of CPB prime solution and early clinical outcomes. METHODS: A total of 323 patients who un

Mean reticulocyte volume enhances the utility of red cell mean sphered cell volume in differentiating peripheral blood spherocytes of hereditary spherocytosis from other causes.

CONTEXT: Mean sphered cell volume (MSCV) and mean reticulocyte volume (MRV) are additional reticulocyte parameters generated while processing the blood samples on Beckman coulter LH 755 in the reticulocyte mode using the volume, conductivity and scatter technology. It has been observed that the difference between mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and MSCV is higher in the cases of hereditary spherocytosis (HS) and this difference is increasingly being utilized as a screening tool for spherocytes. In addition now there have been new observations that reticulocyte volume in cases of HS is less as co

Impact of Squeezing Condition to Obtain Sufficient Blood Volume for Self-Monitoring of Blood Glucose Using an Automatic Puncturing and Sampling System.

Blood sampling for self-monitoring of blood glucose is difficult for the elderly with low dexterity. We developed and tested the utility of an automatic puncturing and sampling (APS) system as a part of an automatic SMBG device, but success rates of securing sufficient blood volume was low (61.9%). Thus, the squeezing condition was changed to increase its success rate. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact to the amount of bleeding by making changes to the squeezing condition. In our previous experiment, blood sampling was performed simultaneously with squeezing, whereas the prese…

The relative contributions of myocardial perfusion, blood volume and extracellular volume to native T1 and native T2 at rest and during adenosine stress in normal physiology.

BACKGROUND: Both ischemic and non-ischemic heart disease can cause disturbances in the myocardial blood volume (MBV), myocardial perfusion and the myocardial extracellular volume fraction (ECV). Recent studies suggest that native myocardial T1 mapping can detect changes in MBV during adenosine stress without the use of contrast agents. Furthermore, native T2 mapping could also potentially be used to quantify changes in myocardial perfusion and/or MBV. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the relative contributions of myocardial perfusion, MBV and ECV to native T1 and native T2 at re…

What blood conservation practices are effective at reducing blood sampling volumes and other clinical sequelae in intensive care? A systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to critically appraise and synthesise evidence for blood conservation strategies in intensive care. Blood sampling is a critical aspect of intensive care to guide clinical decision-making. Repeated blood sampling can result in blood waste and contamination, leading to iatrogenic anaemia and systemic infection. REVIEW METHOD USED: Cochrane systematic review methods were used including meta-analysis, and independent reviewers. DATA SOURCES: A systematic search was conducted in Medline, CINAHL, PUBMED and EMBASE databases. The search was limited to ra
