BACKGROUND: The screening policy of alanine aminotransferase (ALT) testing in blood donors was reassessed. The cutoff value for ALT levels according to German guidelines has always been controversial. In this study the activity and distribution of ALT in a blood donor population were reevaluated and new exclusion levels were defined.
METHODS: 5,706 blood donors were tested for ALT activities with the Reflotron system at 37 degrees C. Donors with ALT levels > 51 IU/l were deferred, a detailed physical examination and additional serologic and biochemical testing were done.
RESULTS: ALT values

BACKGROUND: Red foxes play an important role in the circulation of ticks and tick-borne pathogens, including Babesia spp. While for Babesia vulpes many studies are available on its epidemiology in fox populations as well as pathogenicity in dogs, no data are reported for the recently described Babesia banethi infecting red foxes.
OBJECTIVE: Here we describe the clinical and parasitological follow-up of a naturally occurring B. banethi infection in a red fox from southern Italy.
CASE PRESENTATION: An adult male fox presented with severe debilitation, weight loss, pale mucous membranes, brown

BACKGROUND: Different mosquito-borne pathogens are circulating in Iran including Sindbis virus, West Nile virus, filarioid worms and malaria parasites. However, the local transmission cycles of these pathogenic agents are poorly understood, especially because ecological data on vector species are scarce and there is limited knowledge about the host range; this understanding could help to direct species-specific vector control measurements or to prioritize research.
METHODS: In the summers of 2015 and 2016, blood-fed mosquitoes were collected at 13 trapping sites on the coast of the Caspian Se

Canine vector-borne diseases (CVBDs), transmitted by arthropods, are widespread globally and pose significant health risks to dogs. Diagnosing CVBDs, particularly co-infections, is challenging for laboratory technicians. This study in Thailand evaluated 270 canine blood samples for vector-borne pathogens using microscopy, conventional PCR (cPCR), and the Vcheck M Canine Vector 8 Panel (Vcheck). Microscopy was used for initial screening, while cPCR and Vcheck tested for exposure to eight CVBDs-causing genera (Ehrlichia, Hepatozoon, Mycoplasma, Anaplasma, Rickettsia, Babesia, Leishmania, and Bar

Data about the spreading of arthropod-borne pathogens among hare populations are very scant, so the aim of the present preliminary study was to investigate, through molecular analysis, the occurrence of Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Bartonella sp., Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Coxiella burnetii, Francisella tularensis, Leishmania spp. and piroplasms DNA in blood of 51 wild hares (Lepus europaeus) living in protected areas in Tuscany. All hares resulted negative for A. phagocytophilum, Bartonella sp., B. burgdorferi s.l., C. burnetii and F. tularensis. Five animals (9.8%) were positive for Lei

The risk of HIV transmission in the health care setting is a composite of risks, with exposure to blood being the most important source of infection and percutaneous injuries posing the greatest risk of transmission. The frequency of blood contact varies by occupation, procedure performed, and precautions used. Data suggest that PEP may be effective in reducing the risk of occupational HIV transmission. The risk for transmission of HIV from HCW to patients is very small.

Occupational transmission of hepatitis B virus (HBV), hepatitis C virus, and HIV has been documented. The risk for occupationally transmitted infection varies for these three viruses. Despite effective pre- and postexposure prophylaxis for HBV and recent recommendations for postexposure chemoprophylaxis after an HIV exposure, the best approach to prevent occupational bloodborne infection is the prevention of blood exposures. Epidemiologic data of percutaneous injuries and other blood contacts have provided the basis for prevention strategies. These strategies include the development of improve

Blood transfusion is a globally life-saving intervention, but blood-borne pathogens can threaten its effectiveness. While blood bags are systematically screened for viral and bacterial pathogens, parasite infections are generally overlooked. In this review, we analysed the current literature on transfusion-transmitted malaria (TTM) in India over the past five decades. This analysis is based on 122 studies involving more than 6.5 million individuals. The prevalence of Plasmodium parasitaemia in donors ranged from ∼0% to 0.87% by light microscopy and ∼0% to 2.3% by rapid diagnostic tests. The pr…

Anaplasmosis and babesiosis are globally distributed arthropod-borne diseases known for causing substantial economic losses due to their high morbidity and mortality rates. This study aims to assess the frequency and epidemiological features associated with the infection of Anaplasma marginale, Babesia bigemina, and Babesia bovis in three Creole cattle breeds (Chino Santandereano (Chino), Casanareño (CAS), and Sanmartinero (SM)) in northeastern Colombia. Between June 2019 and March 2020, a total of 252 Creole cattle were sampled, with Chino, CAS, and SM accounting for 42.8%, 29.5%, and 29.5% o

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic and associated non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) affect healthcare seeking behaviour, access to healthcare, test strategies, disease notification and workload at public health authorities, but may also lead to a true change in transmission dynamics. We aimed to assess the impact of the pandemic and NPIs on other notifiable infectious diseases under surveillance in Germany.
METHODS: We included 32 nationally notifiable disease categories with case numbers >100/year in 2016-2019. We used quasi-Poisson regression analysis on a weekly aggregated time-series

BACKGROUND: Cercopithifilaria bainae is a filarioid parasite that infects dogs, being transmitted by Rhipicephalus sanguineus group ticks in many countries of the Mediterranean basin. This study assessed the incidence density rate (IDR) of infection by C. bainae in dogs and the probability of co-infection with other tick-borne pathogens (i.e., Anaplasma platys, Babesia vogeli and Hepatozoon canis), in an area of high endemicity in southern Italy.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: From March 2011 to October 2012, a field study involving 58 young dogs naturally exposed to tick infestation was con

Sharp injures continue to pose a significant risk for the transmission of blood-borne pathogens from the patient to health care workers. Appropriate use of safe devices can significantly reduce such risk. On the basic of a literature review, information is provided about active and passive safety features of medical equipment, and the crucial elements needed for the proper evaluation of a safe device are discussed. Examples of safety equipment are presented. Barriers to the use of these new products are addressed. The user-based system approach for the selection and implementation of safety de…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Blood-borne pathogens are contagious microorganisms that can cause life-threatening illnesses, and are found in human blood. It is crucial to examine how these viruses spread through blood flow in the blood vessel. Keeping that in view, this study aims to determine how blood viscosity, and diameter of the viruses can affect the virus transmission through the blood flow in the blood vessel. A comparative study of bloodborne viruses (BBVs) such as HIV, Hepatitis B, and C, has been addressed in the present model. A couple stress fluid model is used to represent blood as…
