A review of risk factors associated with insulin omission for weight loss in type 1 diabetes.

Research suggests that as many as 60% of people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) admit to misusing insulin. Insulin omission (IO) for the purpose of weight loss, often referred to as diabulimia, is a behaviour becoming increasingly recognised, not least since prolonged engagement can lead to serious vascular complications and mortality. Several risk factors appear to be relevant to the development of IO, most notably gender, anxiety and depression and increased weight concerns and body dissatisfaction. Evidence suggests that women, especially young girls, are more likely to omit insulin as a method …

Associations of socioeconomic status and healthy lifestyle with patient satisfaction in patients following adult spinal deformity surgery.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Mounting evidence suggests that both socioeconomic status (SES) and healthy lifestyle play beneficial roles in spine surgical outcomes. However, their combined influence on patient satisfaction remains insufficiently understood in patients with adult spinal deformity (ASD). PURPOSE: To evaluate the association between SES and healthy lifestyle on patient satisfaction in patients undergoing corrective surgery. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review of a single-institution cohort. PATIENT SAMPLE: A total of 263 patients undergoing corrective surgery between January 2017 and No

Removal of Loose Bodies From the Posterior Aspect of the Knee During Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Technical Note.

In planning total knee arthroplasty (TKA), preoperative radiographs may show calcific bodies in the posterior soft tissues of the knee. We describe a technique in which they can be removed without making a separate skin incision during TKA after femoral and tibial bone resection. This technique involves probing the posteromedial capsule with a clamp to identify the opening to a popliteal cyst. Once identified, the opening is tensioned and incised to allow removal of the loose bodies. If retained, these loose bodies can be a source of patient dissatisfaction, particularly since they are sometim

Cosmetic breast augmentation and eating disorders.

AIMS: To comment on the relation between eating disorders and requests for cosmetic surgery in some women. METHODS: We report two cases of women who were accepted for cosmetic breast augmentation while suffering from current anorexia and bulimia nervosa. RESULTS: For both women, the motivation for seeking cosmetic surgery was directly related to the body image distortion and dissatisfaction which were an inherent part of the eating disorder. CONCLUSION: It is our contention that women with eating disorders require treatment to address the distortion in body image, and the belief that cosmet

Weight, weight-related aspects of body image, and depression in early adolescent girls.

This investigation assessed the hypothesis that early adolescent girls with more negative weight-related body images would report higher levels of depressive symptoms. The Beck Depression Inventory was administered, and measures of objective weight and four dimensions of weight-related body image were obtained: self-reported weight, subjective classification of weight from very underweight to very overweight, satisfaction with weight, and concerns about weight. The results indicated that the more subjective and personal measures of weight-related body image discontent--weight dissatisfaction a

Change in normative eating self-efficacy is associated with six-month weight restoration following inpatient treatment for anorexia nervosa.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a disorder characterized by rigid and restrictive eating behaviors, resulting in significantly low body weight. While specialized behavioral intensive treatment programs can reliably support individuals with AN to normalize eating and weight control behaviors and achieve weight restoration, prognostic factors predicting relapse following treatment are unclear. We examined whether changes in (i) normative eating self-efficacy, (ii) body image self-efficacy, (iii) drive for thinness, and (iv) body dissatisfaction from inpatient admission to six-month follow-up were assoc…

Comparison of appearance dissatisfaction and appearance-related social discomfort among people with systemic sclerosis and burn injury.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: Visible differences from medical conditions and injuries are associated with body image concerns, particularly among females and young adults. We compared dissatisfaction with appearance and social discomfort between people with systemic sclerosis and burn injury, since the extent and implications of appearance changes are well-established in burn injury. METHODS: We searched PubMed, PsycInfo, EMBASE, and CINAHL to 8 December 2024 for studies that used the Satisfaction with Appearance Scale among adults with burn injury or systemic sclerosis. We emailed study authors a

Exploring the Additive Benefit of PTSD Treatment on Eating Disorder Outcomes for Those with Co-Occurring PTSD.

In the current study, we conducted a preliminary test of whether adding evidence-based PTSD treatment may influence intensive ED treatment o … cross groups. The findings indicated that individuals who received PTSD treatment began with higher body dissatisfaction compared to their peers and experienced a significant decrease over the course of treatment. This investigation provides preliminary support for improved body dissatisfaction outcomes when PTSD treatment is incorporated into intensive ED treatment.

Risk and resilience in eating disorders: differentiating pathways among psychosocial predictors.

OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders (EDs) represent a rising global health concern. METHODS: Participants were 698 undergraduate students (Mage = 21, SDage = 4.02), mainly female (71%) and Hispanic (61.6%), who participated in an online survey assessing perfectionism, emotion dysregulation, AS, body dissatisfaction, and eating behaviors. Does maternal psychopathology increase the risk of pre-schooler obesity? A systematic review.

The preschool years may be a critical period for child obesity onset; however, literature examining obesity risk factors to date has largely focused on school-aged children. Several links have been made between maternal depression and childhood obesity risks; however, other types of maternal psychopathology have been widely neglected. The aim of the present review was to systematically identify articles that examined relationships between maternal psychopathology variables, including depressive and anxiety symptoms, self-esteem and body dissatisfaction, and risks for pre-schooler obesity, incl…

Appetizing food cues most consistently relate to men's same-day loss of control eating.

Experiencing loss of control (LOC) while eating is distressing to men and associated with many negative outcomes. Yet, investigations of LOC eating have focused on women. Some data suggest the factors that contribute to the onset and maintenance of these behaviors differ for men. The current study explored whether specific stressors, body dissatisfaction, dieting, hunger, food cravings, and food exposure were associated with same- and next-day LOC eating in young men. Participants included 41 men (18-35y; Mage = 25.4 ± 5.4) who reported engaging in 4 ≥ LOC eating episodes in the prior month. T…

Unnecessary surgical treatment in a case of olfactory reference syndrome.

We present a case of olfactory reference syndrome (ORS) with complaints of bromhidrosis. This patient underwent a lumbar sympathectomy to correct the imagined body odor problem. The patient reported experiencing an improvement after surgery, but later, the olfactory symptoms returned. The main objective with ORS patients should be to begin psychiatric treatment early. Other treatments usually appear to be ineffective and cause great dissatisfaction.

Body-image disturbances in bulimia nervosa: influences of actual body size.

This study evaluated body-image distortion and ideal body-size preferences in 423 nonbulimic women and 108 bulimics. Analyses of covariance were utilized to compare the bulimic and nonbulimic groups on measures of current and ideal body size. Weight was used as a covariate to evaluate the influence of actual body size on perception of current body size and selection of ideal body size. Bulimics chose current body sizes that were significantly larger than those picked by nonbulimics regardless of actual body size. Bulimics also chose thinner ideal body sizes than did nonbulimics, regardless of
