Five topographically organized fields in the somatosensory cortex of the flying fox: microelectrode maps, myeloarchitecture, and cortical modules.

Five somatosensory fields were defined in the grey-headed flying fox by using microelectrode mapping procedures. These fields are: the primary somatosensory area, SI or area 3b; a field caudal to area 3b, area 1/2; the second somatosensory area, SII; the parietal ventral area, PV; and the ventral somatosensory area, VS. A large number of closely spaced electrode penetrations recording multiunit activity revealed that each of these fields had a complete somatotopic representation. Microelectrode maps of somatosensory fields were related to architecture in cortex that had been flattened, cut par

[Normal values of valvular annular areas. Comparison of the results of a necropsy and an echocardiographic series].

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Measurement of valvular annular area is necessary for valvular flow volumen quantification by Doppler echocardiography. The aim of this work was to compare normal valvular annular area values obtained in a necropsic and an echocardiographic series and to ascertain whether a relationship exists between these areas and several anthropometric variables. METHODS: Necropsic series: valvular annular area was measured in 20 hearts from deceased patients (age range: 9-79 years; mean 52 +/- 18) without cardiovascular disease. Echocardiographic series: Valvular annular area

Anthropometric Determinants of Rowing Performance in a Multinational Youth Cohort.

Background: Rowing performance in youth athletes is strongly influenced by anthropometric characteristics, body composition, and limb proportions; however, the combined contribution of these factors across developmental stages remains insufficiently understood. This study investigated the relationships between key anthropometric variables and ergometer performance in a multinational cohort of young rowers. Methods: A total of 194 athletes (48 females, 146 males) from ten countries participated. Based on age and sex, participants were categorized into junior female (JF), junior male (JM), adult

Assessing Left Atrial Volume Indexation to Predict Mortality in Individuals With Overweight and Obesity.

BACKGROUND: Alternative indexation methods for left atrial volume (LAV) have been proposed to achieve better proportional scaling than the current standard body surface area indexation. However, there are limited data showing that these alternative indices provide long-term prognostic value in individuals with overweight or obesity. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the performance of various LAV indexation methods in predicting all-cause mortality in individuals with overweight or obesity. METHODS: We obtained data from the National Echocardiography Database Australia with l

Enrollment fluid status is independently associated with long-term survival of peritoneal dialysis patients.

Fluid overload is a common complication in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. The prognostic importance of enrollment fluid status in long-term PD patients remains to be investigated. The objective of the present study was to investigate the prognostic importance of enrollment fluid status in the long-term survival of PD patients. We enrolled 53 PD patients (mean age: 53 years) from November 2000 to February 2006. On enrollment, demographic, clinical, and biochemical data were recorded. Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) was used to determine the fluid status of PD patients, including extr

Long-term health-related quality of life after a deep second- or third-degree burn treated with skin grafting.

BACKGROUND: As burns are known to have a negative impact on the burn victim's quality of life, the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) is a key outcome in the evaluation of burn treatment. In recent years there has been increasing interest in the use of HRQoL instruments after burn injury. The aim of this study was to assess whether there is a correlation between the HRQoL and the total body surface area (TBSA)% burned and also to assess correlation between the SCAR-Q scores and the TBSA% burned in deep burns requiring skin grafting. METHODS: Participants were adult burn patients treated i

Restrictive Transfusion Strategy Is More Effective in Massive Burns: Results of the TRIBE Multicenter Prospective Randomized Trial.

OBJECTIVES: Studies suggest that a restrictive transfusion strategy is safe in burns, yet the efficacy of a restrictive transfusion policy in massive burn injury is uncertain. Our objective: compare outcomes between massive burn (≥60% total body surface area (TBSA) burn) and major (20-59% TBSA) burn using a restrictive or a liberal blood transfusion strategy. METHODS: Patients with burns ≥20% were block randomized by age and TBSA to a restrictive (transfuse hemoglobin <7 g/dL) or liberal (transfuse hemoglobin <10 g/dL) strategy throughout hospitalization. Data collected included demographics,

A Smartphone App and Cloud-Based Consultation System for Burn Injury Emergency Care.

BACKGROUND: Each year more than 10 million people worldwide are burned severely enough to require medical attention, with clinical outcomes noticeably worse in resource poor settings. Expert clinical advice on acute injuries can play a determinant role and there is a need for novel approaches that allow for timely access to advice. We developed an interactive mobile phone application that enables transfer of both patient data and pictures of a wound from the point-of-care to a remote burns expert who, in turn, provides advice back. METHODS AND RESULTS: The application is an integrated clinica

Not all patients meet the 1day per percent burn rule: A simple method for predicting hospital length of stay in patients with burn.

INTRODUCTION: Hospital length of stay (LOS) is utilized to estimate resource utilization and quality of care. In burns the LOS estimation is 1day per percent total body surface area burn (1day/%TBSA). Our purpose was to evaluate the 1day/%TBSA burn rule and develop simple accurate formulas to predict LOS. METHODS: The American Burn Association National Burn Repository (NBR) from 2000 to 2013 was utilized to collate data on patients >18 years. We divided 106,543 records in half, utilizing one set to develop a model (training set) and the other to test the model (test set). We calculated the di

A review of the trends of self-inflicted burns.

During 1979-1998, 7139 patients were admitted to the Birmingham Burns Centre. Of these, 184 patients were identified with self-inflicted burns. There were 115 males and 69 females. The mean age was 37.4 +/- 14.6 years and mean size of burn was 41.1 +/- 31.3% of total body surface area (TBSA). The yearly admissions of these burns appeared to show a decline, while their percentage as compared to burn admission from other causes showed a rise in the trend. Statistically, however, these trends were not different from zero. During the studied period, there were 446 deaths, of which 81 (18%) were du

Hemodynamic correlates of effective arterial elastance in mitral stenosis before and after balloon valvotomy.

This study had the purpose of documenting the hemodynamic correlates of effective arterial elastance (Ea; i.e., an accurate estimate of hydraulic load) in mitral stenosis (MS) patients. The main hypothesis tested was that Ea relates to the total vascular resistance (R)-to-pulse interval duration (T) ratio (R/T) in MS patients both before and after successful balloon mitral valvotomy (BMV). High-fidelity aortic pressure recordings were obtained in 10 patients (40 +/- 12 yr) before and 15 min after BMV. Ea value was calculated as the ratio of the steady-state end-systolic aortic pressure (ESAP)

Burn resuscitation with a low-volume plasma regimen--analysis of mortality.

The results of a mortality analysis from the Burn Center in Rambam Medical Center, Haifa, Israel, over a 5-year period are presented. The management of severe burns during the 'shock' period included a low-volume resuscitation formula consisting mainly of plasma and a small volume of crystalloid solution. The efficacy of burn management was assessed by probit analysis of the mortality data. We derived the percentage of body surface area burned associated with a 50 per cent probability of death (LA50) for four different age groups. The LA50 values obtained were compared to those obtained from o

[Sonographic determination of thyroid volume in subjects with healthy thyroids].

Echography of the thyroid was performed on 542 persons with thyroid glands normal to palpation. Thyroid volume in men ranged between 9 and 38 ml, in females between 6 and 25 ml; median 16.7 ml and 13.5 ml, respectively. This sex difference is significant. There was only a weakly positive correlation between thyroid size, on one hand, and age or surface area, on the other. In future, thyroid echography should be used as reliable and yet simple method in any epidemiological study of the incidence of goitre.

Hypoxia-induced developmental plasticity of larval growth, gill and labyrinth organ morphometrics in two anabantoid fish: The facultative air-breather Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) and the obligate air-breather the blue gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus).

Larval and juvenile air breathing fish may experience nocturnal and/or seasonal aquatic hypoxia. Yet, whether hypoxia induces respiratory developmental plasticity in larval air breathing fish is uncertain. This study predicted that larvae of two closely related anabantid fish-the facultative air breather the Siamese fighting fish (Betta splendens) and the obligate air breathing blue gourami (Trichopodus trichopterus)-show distinct differences in developmental changes in body, gill, and labyrinth morphology because of their differences in levels of dependency upon air breathing and habitat.
