Congenital and developmental anomalies of the shoulder girdle.

An understanding of congenital and developmental anomalies of the shoulder girdle is facilitated by a knowledge of embryology, physeal appearance and closure, and phylogenetic changes. Scapular, clavicular, and proximal humeral anomalies are classified and discussed with reference to diagnosis and management. Finally anomalies of the shoulder girdle musculature are delineated.

Hyperbrachycephaly, short face, midface hypoplasia, fusion of cervical vertebrae, radiolucent bone defects, and severe destruction of periodontium--a new syndrome: craniofaciocervical osteoglyphic dysplasia.

A patient with an unusual combination of findings, which do not fit in any of the known syndromes, is presented. The patient, a 24.5-year-old male of normal growth and intelligence, manifests craniofacial dysmorphism, radiolucencies in the skull and in the cervical vertebrae, progressive alveolar bone loss and fusion of cervical vertebrae. The young man does not exhibit any other systemic, hematological, biochemical, chromosomal or immunological abnormality, except for IgA deficiency.

Ultrasound Evaluation of Pediatric Orthopaedic Patients.

Ultrasonography is a valuable tool that can be used in many capacities to evaluate and treat pediatric orthopaedic patient. It has the capability to depict bone, cartilaginous and soft-tissue structures, and provide dynamic information. This technique can be readily applied to a wide range of pediatric conditions, including developmental dysplasia of the hip, congenital limb deficiencies, fracture management, joint effusions, and many other musculoskeletal pathologies. There are many benefits of implementing ultrasonography as a regular tool. It is readily accessible at most centers, and infor

The consequences of chronic kidney disease on bone metabolism and growth in children.

Growth retardation, decreased final height and renal osteodystrophy (ROD) are common complications of childhood chronic kidney disease (CKD), resulting from a combination of abnormalities in the growth hormone (GH) axis, vitamin D deficiency, hyperparathyroidism, hypogonadism, inadequate nutrition, cachexia and drug toxicity. The impact of CKD-associated bone and mineral disorders (CKD-MBD) may be immediate (serum phosphate/calcium disequilibrium) or delayed (poor growth, ROD, fractures, vascular calcifications, increased morbidity and mortality). In 2012, the clinical management of CKD-MBD in

Quantitative analysis of the plain radiographic appearance of nonossifying fibroma.

RATIONAL AND OBJECTIVES: To quantitate radiographic features that distinguish the plain radiographic appearance of nonossifying fibroma (NOF) from other solitary lesions of bone. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven hundred nine cases of focal bone lesions, including 34 NOFs, were analyzed according to demographic, anatomic, and plain radiographic features. Vector analysis of groups of features was performed to determine those that are most sensitive and specific for the appearance of NOF in contrast to other lesions in the data base. RESULTS: The radiographic appearance of NOFs was most consistentl

The infant skull: a vault of information.

The art of interpreting skull radiographs is slowly being lost as trainees in radiology see fewer plain radiographs and depend more heavily on computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Nevertheless, skull radiographs still provide significant information that is helpful in finding pathologic conditions and appreciating their extents. Abnormalities in the skull may be reflected as variations in the density, size, and shape of the skull, as well as skull defects. Skeletal dysplasias may manifest as a generalized decrease in calvarial density (hypophosphatasia, osteogenesis imperfecta),

Subchondral bone dysplasia partly participates in prenatal dexamethasone induced-osteoarthritis susceptibility in female offspring rats.

Prenatal dexamethasone exposure (PDE) induces developmental toxicities of multi-organs and susceptibility to multi-diseases in offspring. However, the effects of PDE on osteoarthritis susceptibility in adult offspring and its mechanism have not been reported. In the present study, we treated pregnant Wistar rats with dexamethasone (0.2 mg/kg) daily on gestational days (GD) 9-20. Some pregnant rats were sacrificed on GD20, and the rest were delivered to obtain the postnatal offspring. The adult female offspring rats were performed with ovariectomy or sham operation during postnatal weeks 22-28.

Fetal magnetic resonance imaging of skeletal dysplasias.

BACKGROUND: Fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is obtained for prenatal diagnosis and prognostication of skeletal dysplasias; however, related literature is limited. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to define the utility of fetal MRI for skeletal dysplasias and to report MRI findings associated with specific diagnoses. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was approved by the institutional review board; informed consent was waived. Women referred for suspected fetal skeletal dysplasia who underwent MRI between January 2003 and December 2018 were included. Definitive dia

Detailed ultrasonographic findings in Greenberg dysplasia.

A case of Greenberg dysplasia [hydrops fetalis, ectopic calcifications, "moth-eaten" skeletal dysplasia (HEM)] is presented. Fetal ultrasonography at 20 weeks' gestation showed hydrops fetalis, severe micromelia, irregular hyperechogenic foci in the ribs and vertebral bodies, irregular hypo- and hyperechogenic areas and abnormal contour within the long bones, and flattened and "T"-shaped appearance of the vertebrae. Findings on postmortem histological and radiographic examination were consistent with Greenberg dysplasia.

Radiopaque transverse lines (Harris lines) in the prehispanic population of El Hierro (Canary Islands).

Harris lines were assessed in 48 right tibiae of prehispanic inhabitants of El Hierro (one of the Canary Islands), belonging to 23 adult females and 25 adult males. No Harris lines were detected in sixteen (33%) of the adult individuals (7 females = 30% and 9 males = 36%), these differences are not statistically significant. Female tibiae showed a slightly higher mean number of Harris lines at the distal end than male ones (2.091 +/- 1.9 in females vs 1.417 +/- in males). Ages at which Harris lines were formed show two peaks, a major one at the age of 2 years, and another one between 11 and 13

Osteopathia striata with cranial sclerosis.

Osteopathia striata with cranial sclerosis (OS-CS) is a specific bone dysplasia manifested by hypertelorism, flat nasal bridge, frontal bossing, large head, hypoplastic maxilla, palate anomalies, chronic otitis media, hearing deficits, nasal obstruction, and neurological changes of deafness, facial palsy, ophthalmoplegia, and mental retardation. We will review the clinical and radiologic findings in a new patient from birth to 20 years; this is believed to be the thirty-fifth patient reported. OS-CS is 2.5 times more common in females and occurs as an autosomal dominant condition or a sporadic

Fetal biometry of skeletal dysplasias: a multicentric study.

Twenty-three diagnostic centers worldwide contributed 127 cases of 17 skeletal dysplasias. Discriminant analysis showed that the femur length was the best biometric parameter to distinguish among the five most common disorders in this series (thanatophoric dysplasia, osteogenesis imperfecta type II, achondrogenesis, achondroplasia and hypochondroplasia). Fifty-four percent of fetuses with femur length below 30% of the mean for gestational age had achondrogenesis. Seventy-eight percent of measurements between 40 and 60% of the mean for gestational age represented either thanatophoric dysplasia

[Oral Aging: Age-Related Changes and Their Association With Systemic Aging].

Aging is not driven by a single event but results from the synergistic effects of multiple mechanisms, including genetic instability, epigenetic dysregulation, metabolic imbalance, and disrupted cellular stress responses. Oral aging represents a localized manifestation of systemic aging in the oral cavity and acts as a key contributor to the accelerated aging of the whole body. It not only affects local oral homeostasis but also interacts bidirectionally with systemic aging through pathways such as the release of inflammatory mediators. Age-related oral diseases, such as root caries, gingival
