Several treatment methods for nonunion of humeral fracture have been reported with satisfactory results. However, treatment of a long-standing nonunion of the humerus is more challenging, as it may be complicated by broken implants and bone defects. Little is known about treatment strategies for long-standing humeral nonunion with bone defects, especially in the metaphyseal area. We report a case of long-standing humeral shaft nonunion complicated by a bone defect and deformity, treated with double locking plates and an iliac bone autograft.

Fetal immobilization affects skeletal development and can lead to severe malformations. Still, how mechanical load affects embryonic bone formation is not fully elucidated. This study combines mechanobiology, image analysis and developmental biology, to investigate the structural effects of muscular loading on embryonic long bones. We present a novel approach involving a semi-automatic workflow, to study the spatial and temporal evolutions of both hard and soft tissues in 3D without any contrast agent at micrometrical resolution. Using high-resolution phase-contrast-enhanced X-ray synchrotron

PURPOSE: Several therapeutic strategies have been used for managing unicameral bone cyst (UBC) of the proximal femur. However, there is insufficient evidence to support one treatment over another, and the optimal treatment is controversial. This study aims at describing our experience with surgical reconstruction of paediatric UBCs of the proximal femur using a proximal locking plate and fibular strut allograft.
METHODS: In total, 14 consecutive paediatric patients with Dormans types IB (four cases) and IIB (10 cases) UBC were assessed. Mean patient age was 8.6 ± 2.3 years, and mean follow-up

BACKGROUND: Intramedullary rodding has been the mainstay of long-bone stabilization in osteogenesis imperfecta. However, in some cases, intramedullary rodding cannot provide adequate fixation because of a lack of rotational control and thin diameter of long bones. We have applied adjunctive unicortical locking plate fixation in selected cases of osteogenesis imperfecta to address these biomechanical issues.
METHODS: Thirty-seven bone segments of twenty-four patients with osteogenesis imperfecta (ten type III, nine type IV, three type I, and two type V), in which unicortical locking plate fixa

BACKGROUND: Fixation of the small bony fragments of the phalanges is often difficult. In this study a clinical and radiological evaluation was carried out after operative treatment using the mini-hook plate.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 2003 and 2006 a total of 36 fractures were treated operatively using the mini-hook plate. Of the patients 24 had an basal avulsion fracture of the distal phalanx and 11 patients (12 fractures) had other bony avulsion fractures of the phalanges. The patients were evaluated clinically and radiologically as well as using the disabilities of the arm, shoulder and

Treatment of distal radius fractures with a volar fixed angle plate achieves sufficient stabilisation and permits early physical exercise. However, secondary displacement after surgery sometimes occurs in elderly patients with a metaphyseal comminution and/or cases in which the subchondral support pegs were not placed immediately below the subchondral zone. We treated elderly patients suffering from distal radius fractures with metaphyseal comminution, using both volar fixed angle plate with or without augmentation with a hydroxyapatite bone graft substitute to investigate the benefit of augme

BACKGROUND: The locking compression plate (LCP) with combination holes is a newer device in fracture fixation. We undertook a study comparing the LCP with limited contact dynamic compression plate (LC-DCP) in the treatment of diaphyseal fractures of both bones of the forearm.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a prospective comparative study, 36 patients (18 in each group) with fractures of both the forearm bones (72 fractures) were treated with one of the two devices. The average age of the patients was 30.5 years (range 16-60 years) with mean followup of 2.1 years (range 1.5-2.8 years). The pat

This paper describes the preliminary results of a proximal tibial endoprosthesis which spares the knee joint and enables retention of the natural articulation by replacing part of the tibial metaphysis and diaphysis. In eight patients who had a primary malignant bone tumour of the proximal tibia, the distal stem, which had a hydroxyapatite-coated collar to improve fixation, was cemented into the medullary canal. The proximal end had hydroxyapatite-coated extracortical plates which were secured to the remaining proximal tibial metaphysis using cortical screws. The mean age of the patients at op

Although a number of cases of congenital pseudarthrosis of the clavicle have been described in the literature, they provide little direction for the treatment of this condition when it is associated with thoracic outlet syndrome. The authors describe their experience with such a case in a 20-year-old woman. Symptoms of pain in the ulnar distribution of the right forearm and discoloration of the hand with abduction of the extremity had developed over 3 years. The radial pulse was obliterated by abduction of the arm. Exploration of the brachial plexus revealed a constricting band arising from th

Tissue regeneration has become a promising treatment for craniomaxillofacial bone defects such as alveolar clefts. This study sought to assess the efficacy of lateral ramus cortical plate with buccal fat pad derived mesenchymal stem cells (BFSCs) in treatment of human alveolar cleft defects. Ten patients with unilateral anterior maxillary cleft met the inclusion criteria and were assigned to three treatment groups. First group was treated with anterior iliac crest (AIC) bone and a collagen membrane (AIC group), the second group was treated with lateral ramus cortical bone plate (LRCP) with BFS

PURPOSE: The aims of this study were to assess the complications associated with the use of an external fixator-assisted plate osteosynthesis technique to stabilize a femoral bone defect in a rabbit model and to evaluate if this technique could avoid the mispositioning and the displacement of the femoral fragments during the surgical procedure.
METHODS: A preliminary cadaveric animal study was conducted to develop a new technique of external fixator-assisted plating. Thirty rabbits underwent a surgical procedure consisting in the creation of a femoral bone defect and, subsequently an implanta

INTRODUCTION: Perilunate dislocations are rare high-energy injuries, and the diagnosis is not infrequently missed at initial presentation. The combination of fractures resulting in a trans-styloid, trans-scaphoid, and trans-triquetral perilunate fracture dislocation is extremely rare. Early recognition and diagnosis of these injuries is prudent to restore patient function and prevent morbidity. This injury pattern may progress through several distinct phases often involving the greater or lesser arc. The injury begins with traumatic disruption of the scapholunate joint, followed by an ordered

PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy and complications of 2 different techniques for vertical bone augmentation at implant placement: particulated autogenous bone grafts covered either by resorbable collagen barriers supported by osteosynthesis plates (test) or by nonresorbable titanium-reinforced e-polytetrafluoroethylene (e-PTFE) barrier (control).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-two partially edentulous patients requiring vertical bone augmentation were randomly allocated to 2 treatment groups of 11 patients each. Early implant failures, the amount of vertically regenerated bone measured intrasu

BACKGROUND: Both bone forearm fractures (BBFFs) are a common injury amongst the pediatric population. The main indications of surgical fixation are open, irreducible, or unstable fractures. The two most commonly used surgical techniques are closed or open reduction with intramedullary fixation (IMF) and open reduction with plate fixation (PF). The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine which fixation method is superior for BBFFs.
METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and CENTRAL were searched to identify studies comparing IMF and PF. We extracted data on union rat
