BACKGROUND: To date, more than 90 Streptococcus pneumoniae (S. pneumoniae) capsular serotypes are known. The prevalence of these serotypes varies according to the geographical area and the regional vaccination program. Due to the lack of regular vaccination programs for S. pneumoniae in developing countries, serotyping of the prevalent isolates is useful in selecting the correct vaccine. The present study aimed to evaluate common serotypes of pneumococcal meningitis in Bojnurd, Iran.
METHODS: All cerebrospinal fluid (CFS) samples suspected for bacterial meningitis were analyzed. The samples w

BACKGROUND: Local communities in sub-Saharan Africa have a long history of medicinal plant usage. Like in other parts of the developing world, rural and urban communities are still dependent on herbal medicines for primary health care, and the use of herbal medicines is still an integral part of their daily life and socio-cultural life style. The objective of this paper is to summarise information on the ethnobotany and pharmacology of Kirkia acuminata Oliv. throughout its distributional range.

BACKGROUND: Acute splenic sequestration crises are a complication of sickle cell disease, with high mortality rates and frequent recurrence in survivors of first attacks. Splenectomy and blood transfusion, with their consequences, are the mainstay of long-term management used in different parts of the world.
OBJECTIVES: To assess whether splenectomy (total or partial), to prevent acute splenic sequestration crises in people with sickle cell disease, improved survival and decreased morbidity in people with sickle cell disease, as compared with regular blood transfusions.

BACKGROUND: Nurses in developing countries are frequently exposed to infectious tuberculosis (TB) patients, and have a high prevalence of TB infection. To estimate the incidence of new TB infection, we recruited a cohort of young nursing trainees at the Christian Medical College in Southern India. Annual tuberculin skin testing (TST) was conducted to assess the annual risk of TB infection (ARTI) in this cohort.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: 436 nursing students completed baseline two-step TST testing in 2007 and 217 were TST-negative and therefore eligible for repeat testing in 2008. 181 su

BACKGROUND: People with cystic fibrosis and pancreatic insufficiency are at risk of fat soluble vitamin deficiency as these vitamins (A, D, E and K) are co-absorbed with fat. Thus, some cystic fibrosis centres routinely administer these vitamins as supplements but the centres vary in their approach of addressing the possible development of deficiencies in these vitamins. Vitamin A deficiency causes predominantly eye and skin problems while supplementation of vitamin A to excessive levels may cause harm to the respiratory and skeletal systems in children. Thus a systematic review on vitamin A s

BACKGROUND: Gaucher disease is the most common lysosomal storage disorder caused by a deficiency of the enzyme glucocerebrosidase. Current treatment of the disease involves a choice among enzyme replacement therapy, substrate reduction therapy and stem cell transplantation. Stem cell transplantation is a high risk procedure with possible long-term benefits in the regression of skeletal and neurological changes in people with Gaucher disease.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the role of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in people with Gaucher disease in relation to: mortality risk associated wit

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The aging process has been studied with fervor recently, given our shifting demographics. As age's effects are so manifest in the skin's appearance, structure, mechanics, and barrier function, it is not surprising that much effort has been made in research to better understand them. Quantitative measurements permitted by bioengineering have allowed us to objectively and precisely study aging skin. These overviews piece together the immense amounts of information that have emerged from recent technological advances in dermatological research in order to develop a unified und

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a multifactorial disorder characterized by central obesity, insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, and hypertension, which collectively increase the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular disease (CVD), and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Due to the growing global burden of MetS, there is increasing interest in nutraceuticals such as gamma-oryzanol (γ-ORY), a bioactive compound derived from rice bran oil (RBO), as potential therapeutic agents. A systematic literature search was conducted through July 2024 using PubMed, Google Scholar, and Sci

BACKGROUND: Evening technology use (ETU) has been associated with sleep disturbances, often attributed to blue light exposure and cognitive arousal. However, most of the existing evidence focuses on younger populations and relies primarily on subjective measures. As older adults increasingly engage with both passive and active technology use, it is important to investigate how ETU impacts objective sleep. Currently, there is also a limited understanding of how particular evening digital activities, especially active versus passive engagement, affect objective sleep in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Eclampsia is a leading cause of maternal and perinatal mortality in Nigeria. Preventive and interventional measures have been shown to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity with no significant beneficial effect on neonatal outcomes. The aim of this study is to assess the perinatal outcome of eclampsia at the University of Port-Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective, cross-sectional study was conducted on 88 consecutive patients presenting with antepartum eclampsia at the UPTH between 1(st) January 2007 and 31(st) December 2008. A protocol was
