Few studies have examined the prevalence, characteristics, and outcomes of treatment-seeking-suicidal adolescents with borderline personality disorder (BPD). To address this, we evaluated 108 suicidal adolescents seen in a specialized outpatient program and treated with Dynamic Deconstructive Psychotherapy (DDP) and examined changes in the severity of their BPD symptoms and suicide ideation over 6 months. Of these 108 adolescents, 81% (n = 87) met criteria for BPD on structured interviews. Adolescents with BPD had more frequent suicide attempts and recreational drug use, greater functional imp…

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a common mental health condition that remains highly stigmatized in health care settings. Numerous reviews have examined stigma related to BPD, yet findings remain varied across methodologies and focus areas. The objective of this umbrella scoping review was to synthesize existing literature by mapping the volume, scope, and characteristics of published reviews. Methodological quality was assessed using the JBI checklist and reported using PRISMA-ScR guidelines. A comprehensive search was conducted across six databases. Fourteen reviews met eligibility …

BACKGROUND: Although structural and functional alterations in borderline personality disorder (BPD) have been widely reported in neuroimaging studies, the findings remain heterogeneous. Emerging consensus suggests that these distributed alterations may converge on a common pathological network associated with BPD, providing a network-level framework for elucidating the neural basis of the disorder.
METHODS: We integrated findings from 96 publications covering 2325 patients with BPD and 2356 healthy controls across gray matter volume, task-induced activation, and resting-state activity modalit…

BACKGROUND: Children of mothers with borderline personality disorder (BPD) face an increased risk of developing mental health issues. To prevent the intergenerational transmission of psychopathology, a thorough understanding of specific pathways is essential. BPD is characterized by symptoms such as difficulties in emotion regulation, impulsivity, and attachment insecurity, all of which have a detrimental impact on child development. Here, we explore the role of these three core characteristics as potential mediators for the impact of maternal BPD on child psychopathology.
METHODS: The study …

INTRODUCTION: Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) affects 1-2 % of the population and poses significant health challenges. Individuals with BPD face a reduced life expectancy of 14-27 years, primarily due to suicide and cardiovascular-related issues. This scoping review aimed to provide an overview of the existing literature on physical activity (PA) in BPD management, focusing on research characteristics and exploring underlying rationales.
METHODS: The PubMed, CINAHL, Embase, PsycINFO, Scopus, PEDro and Cochrane databases were searched for both unpublished and published studies from 1980 …

Systemic inflammation and dysregulated kynurenine (KYN) metabolism are increasingly recognised as key factors in various psychiatric disorders. Imbalances in the KYN pathway are associated with psychological and cognitive symptoms across disorders like depression and schizophrenia, yet remain unexplored in borderline personality disorder (BPD). This study is the first to compare KYN metabolism together with the myokine IL-6 in BPD patients and healthy controls and to examine acute exercise effects on this pathway in BPD. Fourteen patients with BPD and nine controls participated in two experime…

This meta-analysis synthesised findings on the association between emotional intelligence (EI) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) and evaluated potential moderators. Studies were sourced through systematic searches of four databases in April 2024. Studies had to report effect size data and participant numbers to be included in the meta-analysis. The meta-analysis included 25 samples and 7189 participants. A random effects model was used to calculate the overall effect size because this model allows inferences to studies not included in the analysis. Potential causes of heterogeneity wer…

BACKGROUND: Phenomenological literature describes borderline personality disorder (BPD) as marked by instantaneous and immediate temporal experience. Meanwhile, qualitative clinical findings suggest that BPD lived experience is dominated by a negatively biased, disorganised past and an overintense present, yet systematic research remains limited. METHODS: Cross-sectional study, with 52 inpatients diagnosed with BPD compared to a healthy control group (N = 98). To examine temporal experience in individuals with BPD quantitatively, this study uses the Transdiagnostic Assessment of Temporal Exper…

Introduction Being diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) as a parent can undermine the overall functioning of the family, particularly the exercise of parental and marital roles. However, current knowledge about the general functioning of families in which a parent has such a diagnosis remains fragmented. It is therefore essential to better understand this reality in order to equip health and social service professionals who support these individuals and their families. Objectives The main objective of this study was to describe how each member of the parental couple with at lea…

Introduction Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a cluster B personality disorder that is characterized by altered perceptions of self-image, affect, and behavioral difficulties, especially a fear of being abandoned or rejected. Individuals with BPD engage in impulsive behaviors such as substance abuse, risky sexual behavior, self-harm, excessive spending, or binge eating. Beyond the individual level, BPD has a damaging effect on the integrity and safety of societies. Subjects with borderline personality disorder have various types of traumatic childhood experiences and social exclusion. …

Previous research suggests a connection between borderline personality disorder (BPD) and somatic comorbidities, underscoring the importance of lifestyle and health-related behaviour (LHRB) in the emergence of BPD. We investigated LHRBs-physical activity, sleeping and overeating-among young people at different BPD stages compared to a matched community sample. Furthermore, we explored whether problematic LHRBs intensify in later BPD stages. Participants included 55 young people exhibiting BPD features from a specialized mental health care institution, matched with a community control group bas…

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by emotional instability, impulsivity and unstable interpersonal relationships. Patients experience discomforting levels of distress, inducing symptoms like dissociation, aggression or withdrawal. Social situations are particularly challenging, and acute social stress can reduce patients' cognitive and social functioning. In patients with Major Depressive Disorder or Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, which show high comorbidity with BPD, the endocrine stress response is characterized by Hypothalamus-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction, w…

BACKGROUND: Psychological treatments for young people with sub-threshold or full-syndrome borderline personality disorder (BPD) are found to be effective. However, little is known about the age at which adolescents benefit from early intervention. This study investigated whether age affects the effectiveness of early intervention for BPD.
METHODS: N = 626 participants (M age = 15 years, 82.7% female) were consecutively recruited from a specialized outpatient service for early intervention in BPD in adolescents aged 12- to 17-years old. DSM-IV BPD criteria were assessed at baseline, one-year (…

Previous evaluations of interventions for borderline personality disorder have focused on psychotherapies. This study (N=42 patients), conducted in Liverpool, United Kingdom, reviewed the effect on out-of-area treatments (OATs) and hospital admissions of establishing a local case management team and a combined day treatment and crisis service for patients who are too dysregulated to access typical office-based psychotherapy. Data from 12, 24, and 36 months postintervention were compared with baseline data. All patients in OATs were repatriated to the local community. No new patients were sent …

INTRODUCTION: Dysfunctions in the oxytocin system have been reported in patients with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Deficits could be related to interpersonal hypersensitivity, which has been previously associated with failures in social cognition (SC) in this disorder, especially in Theory of Mind (ToM) skills. The aim of this work is to study the links between the oxytocin system and SC impairments in patients with BPD.
METHOD: Plasma oxytocin levels (OXT) and protein expression of oxytocin receptors in blood mononuclear cells (OXTR) were examined in 33 patients with a diagnosis of…

Women are predominantly diagnosed with BPD, with studies estimating a 3:1 female-to-male diagnostic ratio in clinical settings. Previous studies present conflicting findings regarding gender-level criterion differences, with some indicating differences in contradictory criteria. These studies primarily utilize outpatient samples, highlighting gaps in the literature. Thus, the current study investigates gender-level criterion differences, functioning, and impairment within a novel, partial hospital sample. Participants included (a) a sample of 1,153 individuals from the total population of part

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is diagnosed in 10-30% of patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), and the frequency of MDD among individuals with BPD reaches over 80%. The comorbidity of MDD and BPD is associated with more severe depressive symptoms and functional impairment, higher risk of treatment resistance and increased suicidality. The effectiveness of ketamine usage in treatment resistant depression (TRD) has been demonstrated in numerous studies. In most of these studies, individuals with BPD were not excluded, thus given the high co-occurrence of these disorders, it is po…

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious disorder with a lifetime prevalence of 2.7-5.9% and is thought to correlate with altered neuroplasticity. The aim of the present study is to investigate possible associations of BPD (-severity) and alterations in neurological soft signs (NSS) and olfactory function.
METHODS: For the monocentric observational study, 39 female subjects with a BPD diagnosis and 19 female healthy control subjects were recruited. The groups were matched by age. Olfactory functions were examined using Sniffin' Sticks. NSS were assessed by a standardized…

BACKGROUND: Mentalization-based treatment (MBT) is an evidence based treatment for patients diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Although MBT is effective, on average, for individuals with BPD, there are large individual differences in treatment outcomes. Research on predictors of the treatment effect of MBT, such as intelligence, is needed to determine which treatment is most effective for which 'category' of BPD patients, providing more knowledge about optimal indications.
OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to investigate whether intelligence is associated with MBT outcomes in pati…
