OBJECTIVE: To determine if breast-conserving therapy (BCT) consisting of segmentectomy, axillary lymph node dissection, and postoperative irradiation is a feasible approach to breast cancer in younger women, whose breast tissue is dense and whose tumors can be difficult to detect and successfully excise.

Approximately 98% of our female population are capable of breast-feeding. Optimal success in breast-feeding is achieved when the first suckling stimulus occurs no later than 2 h following delivery. Obstetrical surgery impairs breast-feeding. Lactation is considered to be optimal with 7 to 10 min of milk uptake and 7 to 10 min of suckling for galactopoesis and discontinuation. Axillary lymphoscintigraphy (ALS) has been investigated in 51 patients with operable breast carcinoma between July 1982 and February 1984. A consecutive series of 791 women who had attended diagnostic breast clinics during 1967-70 and been found to be free of malignant disease were later traced to determine their subsequent incidence of breast cancer. Of the 770 (97%) successfully traced, 22 had developed breast cancer. Based on data from the Welsh Cancer Registry only eight cases of breast cancer had been expected, so that the excess risk for the group was 2.7. This article is a review of the characteristics of bilateral breast cancer (BBC). Synchronous bilateral breast cancer (SBBC) and metachronous bilateral breast cancer (MBBC) account for 2.9-3.9% and 4.1-4.6% of all new breast cancer cases, respectively.
