An intradural extramedullary bronchogenic cyst in the thoracolumbar spine: A case report.

RATIONALE: We report the symptoms beginning with weakness and the clinical courses of a patient who was diagnosed with an intradural extramedullary bronchogenic cyst. PATIENT CONCERNS: The patient was a 44-year-old man visited the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation for walking difficulties characterized by limping due to muscle weakness of left lower extremity for 5 months and atrophy in left calf muscle. DIAGNOSES: Lumbar spine MRI was repeated, since radiating pain in the left hip and posterior thigh with low back pain developed 16 months later. Intraspinal mass of T12 and …

Successful treatment of an intrathoracic bronchogenic cyst in a Holstein-Friesian calf.

A 5-½-month-old female Holstein-Friesian calf was presented with a history of recurring ruminal tympany and poor development. The absence of lung sounds on the right hemithorax suggested a right-sided intrathoracic pathology. Radiography and computed tomography revealed a large thin-walled cavernous lesion with a gas-fluid interface which almost completely filled the right thoracic cavity. Fluid aspirated from the lesion was clear, yellowish and odorless. These findings led to the diagnosis of a bronchogenic cyst. Thoracotomy was performed under general anesthesia. The cyst strongly adhered to…

[Infected bronchogenic cysts may cause recurrence of bronchial infection].

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital and are caused by an abnormal budding of the endotracheobronchial tree in the first trimester. They are typically located in the thoracic cavity and are often diagnosed in early childhood due to persistent respiratory symptoms such as stridor, cough and dyspnoea. In adults bronchogenic cysts are seldom. Secondary infection is rare. We present two patients with infected bronchogenic cysts. The patients were both treated at the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Rigshospitalet, within a period of six months.

Morphological analysis of three extrathoracic bronchogenic cysts simulating neoplasms.

Bronchogenic cyst is a congenital anomaly of the primitive foregut. Unusual occurrences in extrathoracic sites have been described in the literature, some of which may clinically simulate neoplasms. We report three additional cases arising near the left adrenal gland, left ovary and gastric wall. Pathological findings are discussed, together with a review of the literature.

Pulmonary and mediastinal bronchogenic cysts: a clinicopathologic study of 33 cases.

Bronchogenic cysts are uncommon congenital anomalies of foregut origin and usually located within the mediastinum and the lung. A retrospective study of 33 thoracic bronchogenic cysts was undertaken to detail their clinicopathologic and radiologic features. There were 18 male and 15 female patients between 12 and 77 years of age with a mean age of 41 years. Thirty-one patients (94%) were symptomatic at the time of diagnosis and the chief complaint was chest pain (48.5%). Most of the cysts presented as homogeneous water-density shadows on standard chest radiographs. The location was intrapulmon…

A mixed bacterial infection of a bronchogenic lung cyst diagnosed by PCR.

An unusual paediatric case of a bronchogenic cyst infected with both Haemophilus influenzae type b and Streptococcus pneumoniae is described, which was detected not by culture of the purulent cyst fluid, but by real-time PCR amplification for several potential pathogens of DNA extracted from the fluid.

Bronchogenic cyst of the gastric fundus presenting as a gastrointestinal stromal tumor.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) of the stomach are being recognized with increasing frequency. The diagnosis is usually made on the b … genic and esophageal duplication cysts usually arise in the chest or mediastinum. On rare occasions bronchogenic cysts may lose their connection to the tracheobronchial tree and migrate to a subcutaneous position in the neck or descend into the retroperitoneum. The importance of this case is that it demonstrates a rare yet essential component to the differential di …

Scapular bronchogenic cysts in children: case report and review of the literature.

Cutaneous bronchogenic cysts (CBC) are rare solitary lesions which originate from primitive tracheobronchial tree. The periscapular location of these lesions is even a rare condition. The aim of this study is to evaluate this pathology after our case with literature review. An one-year-old girl was brought to our clinics with the complaint of a drainage at the back of her shoulder. In her physical examination, a hyperemic enduration with a sinus and purulent drainage was noted at the left scapular region. Ultrasonography revealed a lesion of 15x11 mm2 in size with a thick wall and a hypoechoic…

Unusual case of stridor and wheeze in an infant: tracheal bronchogenic cyst.

Bronchogenic cysts are congenital anomalies that represent aberrant development of the foregut. Bronchogenic cysts in the mediastinum have been documented in both children and adults, but only one case of tracheal bronchogenic cyst in an infant was found in the literature. We report on a case of an infant with wheeze, stridor, and retractions, caused by a midtracheal bronchogenic cyst. This entity, with its unusual location, should be considered in the differential diagnosis of respiratory distress, cyanotic spells, wheezing, and stridor in infants.

[Subdiaphragmatic bronchogenic cyst in the left crus of diaphragm: report of a case].

A 39-year-old man who had a subdiaphragmatic bronchogenic cyst in the left crus of diaphragm received surgical treatment. The cyst was located in the retroperitoneum just below the diaphragm and was adhered to the left crus of diaphragm and unconnected with any other structures. The surgically resected cyst was 50 x 25 x 22 mm diameter and the wall was thin and contained white turbid mucus. Histologically, the cyst consisted of ciliated epithelium, mucus glands, smooth muscle, cartilage and this evidence established the final diagnosis of bronchogenic cyst. The post operative course was uneven…

Lateral cervical bronchogenic cyst: an unusual cause of a lump in the neck.

BACKGROUND: Congenital cysts of the neck in children are not uncommon. Most of these are thyroglossal, branchial cleft, or less commonly, thymic cysts. Bronchial cysts rarely are initially seen as a neck mass. METHODS: Use of an illustrative case of a bronchogenic cyst initially seen as an upper lateral neck mass. CONCLUSIONS: We emphasize that although ectopic bronchogenic cysts are rare lesions of the head and neck, especially in the upper lateral neck, they should be included in the differential diagnosis in the evaluation of congenital neck cysts.

A retroperitoneal bronchogenic cyst: a rare cause of a mass in the adrenal region.

This report documents a bronchogenic cyst presenting as an adrenal tumour in a 51 year old man with persistent epigastric pain. The cyst is regarded as a developmental abnormality of the primitive foregut, which typically occurs in the chest. Subdiaphragmatic, and retroperitoneal locations in particular, are unusual. The differential diagnosis of a bronchogenic cyst in the retroperitoneum includes cystic teratoma, bronchopulmonary sequestration, cysts of urothelial and mullerian origin, and other foregut cysts.

Thoracoscopic excision of mediastinal bronchogenic cysts: results in 20 cases.

BACKGROUND: We present our experience with thoracoscopic resection of mediastinal bronchogenic cysts in adults. METHODS: From November 1990 to September 1993, 20 patients with mediastinal bronchogenic cysts were operated on by thoracoscopy. The average cyst size was 4.9 cm, and the largest diameter was 10 cm. Ten cysts were located in the middle mediastinum and 10 in the posterior mediastinum. Two cysts were complicated. RESULTS: Thirteen bronchogenic cysts were resected completely by thoracoscopy. We had to convert thoracoscopy into thoracotomy because of bleeding in two cases and because o…

A bronchogenic cyst in an infant causing tracheal occlusion and cardiac arrest.

A 3-month-old infant treated for 3 weeks for suspected bronchiolitis, developed episodes of profound desaturation. A lateral X-ray showed displacement and compression of the trachea. Respiratory arrest, from which she was successfully resuscitated, occurred just before MRI scan. The mass was removed at thoracotomy and a histological diagnosis of a bronchogenic cyst was made. Mediastinal masses in babies are relatively rare, and the situation in which they present with acute respiratory distress may prove extremely challenging to the anaesthetist. Bronchogenic cysts are difficult to diagnose pr…

Excision of bronchogenic cysts in children using an ultrathin fibreoptic bronchoscope.

PURPOSE: We report the use of an ultrathin fibreoptic bronchoscope (Olympus N20: external diameter: 2.2 mm) as the means of airway endoscopic monitoring during anaesthesia for the excision of mediastinal bronchogenic cysts in two young children. CLINICAL FEATURES: The first, a four-month old boy, presented with stridor and wheezing due to a subcarinal bronchogenic cyst compressing the two main bronchi. The second, an eight-day-old girl whose trachea was intubated, presented with respiratory noise in relation to a bronchogenic cyst compressing the end of the trachea. In both cases, airway endo…
