Incidence of renal stones among cadmium exposed battery workers.

The health effects of occupational exposure to cadmium were studied in a group of 902 workers employed for at least one year in a Swedish battery factory between 1931 and 1982. Data on air cadmium concentrations for different periods were combined with company employment records to obtain individual cumulative exposure estimates. A questionnaire including questions on the occurrence of kidney stones was sent to all 601 living workers and to the next of kin of 267 of the deceased workers. The response rate was 88%. 73 workers reported renal calculi that appeared after initial employment. A dose…

Environmental renal disease: lead, cadmium and Balkan endemic nephropathy.

The similarity of lead and cadmium nephropathy to Balkan endemic nephropathy warrants careful reevaluation of the possibility that these nephrotoxic metals contribute to the production of the endemic renal disease. Low-level environmental exposure may result in a relationship between the concentration of the metals in tissue storage sites and biological fluids that differs from that encountered after occupational exposure. Urine and blood concentrations may therefore be inadequate measures of exposure. Lead is accumulated in the skeleton and cadmium in the liver and kidneys with biological hal…

Cadmium-induced ovarian toxicity in hamsters, mice, and rats.

The effects of cadmium on the female genital tract of Syrian hamsters (Cr:RGH), of four mouse strains (BALB/cAnNCr, DBA/2NCr, C57BL/6NCr, NFS/NCr), and two rat strains (F344/NCr and WF/NCr) were studied by light microscopy after a single sc injection of cadmium chloride (CdCl2). Experiments involved animals prior to and after sexual maturity, and employed CdCl2 doses ranging from 20 to 47.5 mumol/kg. Animals were examined at intervals from 24 hr to 8 weeks following treatment. Syrian hamsters were most susceptible to CdCl2-induced ovarian hemorrhagic necrosis at all ages tested. Most severe ov…

Cadmium-induced forelimb ectrodactyly: a proposed mechanism of teratogenesis.

We have attempted to elucidate the mechanism of cadmium teratogenesis utilizing inbred mouse strains sensitive (C57BL/6J) or resistant (SWV) to the embryotoxic effect of this common heavy metal contaminant. Carbonic anhydrase activity of whole-embryo homogenates was moderately depressed in C57BL/6J mice compared to a slight and transient decrease in the resistant SWV mice. Embryonic erythrocytes were similarly examined, and the cadmium did not have any effect on carbonic anhydrase activity in either strain. Likewise, histochemical examination of carbonic anhydrase activity did not reveal any e…

General subcellular effects of lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic.

This working paper summarizes the known ultrastructural and biochemical effects of lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic on subcellular organelle systems following in vivo administration. Documented metal-induced alterations in nuclear, mitochondrial, microsomal, and lysosomal functions are discussed in relation to their potential impact on cellular responses to other environmental agents. Each of the above elements has been found to interfere with normal cellular replication and genetic processes. Mitochondrial swelling and depression of respiratory function are discussed in relation to known m…

The roles of MicroRNAs in cadmium toxicity and in the protection offered by plant food-derived dietary phenolic bioactive substances against cadmium-induced toxicity.

Cadmium, a harmful food contaminant, poses severe health risks. There are ongoing efforts to reduce cadmium pollution and alleviate its toxicity, including plant-based dietary intervention. This review hypothesizes that microRNAs (miRNAs), as regulatory eukaryotic transcripts, play crucial roles in modulating cadmium-induced organ damage, and plant food-derived bioactive compounds provide protective effects via miRNA-mediated mechanisms. The review reveals that there are interplays between certain miRNAs and plant food-derived dietary bioactive substances when these bioactives, especially phen…

Cadmium exposure in First Nations communities of the Northwest Territories, Canada: smoking is a greater contributor than consumption of cadmium-accumulating organ meats.

Traditional food consumption among northern populations is associated with improved nutrition but occasionally can also increase contaminant exposure. High levels of cadmium in the organs of moose from certain regions of the Northwest Territories, Canada, led to the release of consumption notices. These notices recommended that individuals limit their consumption of kidney and liver from moose harvested from the Southern Mackenzie Mountain. A human biomonitoring project was designed to better characterize exposure and risks from contaminants, including cadmium, among Dene/Métis communities of …

Protective effects of cadmium chloride against UVB injury in mouse skin and in cultured human cells: a possible role of cadmium-induced metallothionein.

Metallothionein (MT) is a cysteine-rich protein with antioxidant and metal-chelating activities that is readily inducible by exposure to a variety of stimuli including heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd2+). We have investigated the protective effects of Cd2+ treatment on sunburn cell (SBC) induction in mouse skin in vivo and human cell survival in vitro after UVB exposure. The number of SBC in mouse ear skin was significantly reduced in Cd(2+)-treated mice (10 mumol CdCl2/kg) with each UVB dose (25, 50 and 100 mJ/cm2) compared with controls. Delay of UVB exposure after Cd2+ administration (24 h)…

Efficient Cadmium-Tolerant Phosphate-Solubilizing Bacteria Loaded on Bone-Derived Biochar Effectively Alleviated Cadmium Pollution and Phosphorus Deficiency in Brassica napus L. Plantation.

Both cadmium (Cd) contamination and phosphorus deficiency pose major constraints to sustainable crop production. This study loaded highly efficient Cd-tolerant phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (CdTPSB) onto calcium- and phosphorus-rich pig bone biochar (PBB) to construct a functional composite (MPBB), which was subsequently applied in a Brassica napus L. pot experiment. The results revealed that the CdTPSB possessed strong capabilities in phosphate solubilization (383.67-520.19 mg L-1), Cd immobilization (64.67-66.67%), IAA production (113.24-114.27 μg mL-1), and siderophore activity (65.02-89.…

Unveiling the cadmium tolerance mechanisms of endophytic PGPB Pantoea sp. EEL5 isolated from Thinopyrum elongatum and its bioremediation for acidic cadmium-contaminated soil.

Cadmium (Cd) contamination in acidic soils poses a critical threat to agricultural productivity and safety. However, effective microbial strategies remain challenging due to the scarcity of microbial resources that are dual-resistant to acid and Cd. Here, we investigated the Cd-resistance mechanisms of Pantoea sp. EEL5, an acid- and Cd-tolerant plant growth-promoting bacterium, and evaluated its potential to remediate acidic Cd-contaminated soil. EEL5 exhibited efficient Cd2 + removal through extracellular adsorption and intracellular accumulation. Transcriptomic and biochemical analyses revea…

Remediation effect of mercapto-palygorskite combined with manganese sulfate on cadmium contaminated alkaline soil and cadmium accumulation in pak choi (Brassica chinensis L.).

Cadmium pollution in alkaline soil in some areas of northern China seriously threatens agricultural production and human health, but there are few materials and methods to remediate cadmium pollution in alkaline soil. Therefore, it is necessary to further study the economic and adaptive remediation and regulation techniques of cadmium pollution in alkaline soil. In the study, a pot experiment was conducted to study the effects of MP and MnSO4 combined treatment on the immobilization effect of cadmium contaminated alkaline soils. The results showed that LM and HM treatments in different periods…

Comparative transcriptome analysis reveals candidate genes related to cadmium accumulation and tolerance in two almond mushroom (Agaricus brasiliensis) strains with contrasting cadmium tolerance.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic metal occurring in the environment naturally. Almond mushroom (Agaricus brasiliensis) is a well-known cultivated edible and medicinal mushroom. In the past few decades, Cd accumulation in A.brasiliensis has received increasing attention. However, the molecular mechanisms of Cd-accumulation in A. brasiliensis are still unclear. In this paper, a comparative transcriptome of two A.brasiliensis strains with contrasting Cd accumulation and tolerance was performed to identify Cd-responsive genes possibly responsible for low Cd-accumulation and high Cd-tolerance. Using low Cd-…

catena-Poly[[(8-amino-quinoline-κN,N')cadmium]-di-μ-thio-cyanato-κN:S;κS:N-[(8-amino-quinoline-κN,N')cadmium]-di-μ-chlorido].

In the title compound, [CdCl(NCS)(C(9)H(8)N(2))](n), the Cd(II) atom is in a distorted octa-hedral coordination environment defined by two chloride anions, two N atoms from an 8-amino-quinoline ligand, one N atom from one thio-cyanate anion and one S atom from a symmetry-related thio-cyanate anion. Two Cd(II) atoms are bridged by two chloride anions, forming an inversion-related Cd(2)Cl(2) unit; these units are further linked through thio-cyanate anions, leading to a chain structure extending parallel to [010]. Weak π-π stacking inter-actions with centroid-centroid distances of 3.430 (4) Å and

The association between urinary kidney injury molecule 1 and urinary cadmium in elderly during long-term, low-dose cadmium exposure: a pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Urinary kidney injury molecule 1 is a recently discovered early biomarker for renal damage that has been proven to be correlated to urinary cadmium in rats. However, so far the association between urinary cadmium and kidney injury molecule 1 in humans after long-term, low-dose cadmium exposure has not been studied. METHODS: We collected urine and blood samples from 153 non-smoking men and women aged 60+, living in an area with moderate cadmium pollution from a non-ferrous metal plant for a significant period. Urinary cadmium and urinary kidney injury molecule 1 as well as other re…

Al(ii) transfer harnessing a well-defined cadmium precursor.

Low-valent aluminum chemistry continues to expand the boundaries of main-group reactivity, yet the selective generation and transfer of Al(i … 5Me5) proved as an excellent candidate, selectively transferring aluminum complex fragments through cadmium extrusion. This reactivity was verified through reactions with free radicals, dichalcogenides, and benzophenone (-derivatives), the latter representing spin-trapped versions of the fleeting Al(ii) radical [({N(TMS)2})(Cp*)Al]˙. In contrast, [{N(TMS) …

Molecular Mechanisms of Cadmium-Induced Toxicity and Its Modification.

Cadmium (Cd) is a toxic environmental heavy metal that exerts harmful effects on multiple tissues, including the kidney, liver, lung, and bone, and is also associated with the development of anemia. However, the precise molecular mechanisms underlying Cd-induced toxicity remain incompletely understood. In this paper, we review the recent molecular mechanisms of Cd-induced toxicity and its modification, with a particular emphasis on our recent findings. Using a combination of DNA microarray analysis, protein-DNA binding assays, and siRNA-mediated gene silencing, we identified several transcript…
