Calcinosis cutis constitutes a heterogeneous group of chronic disorder. It can be associated with disturbance of calcium and/or phosphate metabolism (metastatic, tumor calcinosis, calciphylaxis) but may also develop without any metabolic disorder, in particular during the course of connective tissue diseases. Among these, the most common are dermatomyositis and the limited form of systemic sclerosis. The physiopathology of calcinosis cutis is poorly known. It can cause pain, chronic ulcerations, infections, which are sources of sometimes major disability. Treatment of calcinosis is challenging…

We have followed up a large family in which seven members have tumoral calcinosis. One girl had the skin lesions of localized calcinosis cutis apart from the typical subcutaneous deposits of calcium. Like most persons with tumoral calcinosis, our patient had normal serum calcium concentrations; however, the serum phosphorus levels were greatly elevated. The familial occurrence and elevated serum phosphorus levels suggest the possibility of some as yet undefined, heritable metabolic defect as the underlying cause. The occurrence of tumoral calcinosis with localized calcinosis cutis is a rare as…

Calcinosis cutis is a condition of accumulation of calcium salts within the dermis leading to the formation of a calcified mass. This complication has been reported in acne vulgaris and other systemic metabolic disorders. This paper presents a rare case of calcinosis cutis in a 14-year-old male which was found at a routine orthodontic assessment.

Calcinosis cutis represents a debilitating complication of chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus; however, its underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. We performed spatial transcriptomic profiling on skin biopsies from 4 patients with chronic cutaneous lupus erythematosus: 2 with calcinosis cutis and 2 without. Analysis of 87,730 cells across 6 major cell types revealed distinct molecular signatures associated with calcification. Fibroblasts in calcinosis cutis lesions exhibited significant upregulation of osteogenic and extracellular matrix genes, including periostin, collag…

BACKGROUND: Deposition of calcium in skin is currently categorized into a group of disorders referred to as calcinosis cutis. Divisions between types and subtypes within this confusing classification are predominantly based on morphologic differences in the calcification and serve to obscure pathogenesis. This is especially evident in a subtype of calcinosis cutis, known as tumoral calcinosis. Calcifications in cases of tumoral calcinosis share the following characteristics, but without evidence of a common pathogenesis: large size, juxtaarticular location, progressive enlargement over time, a…

We describe a report of an elderly lady who was hospitalized with progressive worsening of breathlessness and fatigue of one month's duration. Clinical evaluation of the patient revealed hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia, interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension without left heart failure, and bilateral gluteal calcinosis cutis. Initially, CREST (calcinosis, Raynaud's phenomenon, esophageal dysmotility, sclerodactyly, and telangiectasia) syndrome was considered in view of the telangiectasia and calcinosis cutis, but a strong autosomal inheritance pattern and endoscopies (nasal and…

Tumoral calcinosis rarely occurs in the hand. It is an uncommon familial disease suggesting an autosomal recessive gene pattern, often with laboratory findings of hyperphosphatemia and normocalcemia. Our patient had bilateral hand involvement, including local calcinosis cutis of the skin and bone changes not previously reported in the literature. At a 2-year follow-up after two lesions were excised from her left hand, one lesion had completely resolved and the other recurred. Two large symptomatic lesions and one area of local calcinosis cutis in her right hand have recently been excised.

Calcinosis universalis is a rare subtype of connective tissue diseases known as calcinosis cutis. The disease is described as diffuse calcium salt deposits in subcutaneous, fibrous muscle structures, and tendons. Calcinosis cutis typically occurs secondary to a tissue damaging disease such as dermatomyositis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and Sjogren syndrome, presenting before age 20 and predominantly affecting women. Calcinosis universalis presents challenges for anesthesia providers as joint calcification can make positioning difficult, vascular access becomes increasingly difficult over ti…

Subepidermal calcified nodule (SCN) is a form of calcinosis cutis that most commonly occurs in children. The typical clinical presentation is of a solitary verrucous nodule on the face, but occasionally multiple lesions may be seen. We describe SCN on the eyelids of two female patients; one of whom had four lesions. The histopathology was typical of calcinosis cutis. Both patients were in good health.

OBJECTIVE: The pathogenesis of calcinosis cutis, a disabling complication of SSc, is poorly understood and effective treatments are lacking. Inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi) is a key regulator of ectopic mineralization, and its deficiency has been implicated in ectopic mineralization disorders. We therefore sought to test the hypothesis that SSc may be associated with reduced circulating PPi, which might play a pathogenic role in calcinosis cutis.
METHODS: Subjects with SSc and age-matched controls without SSc were recruited from the outpatient rheumatology clinics at Rutgers and Northwestern Un…

INTRODUCTION: In 1989 a new type of calcinosis cutis has been described in association with Down's syndrome. This is the milia-like idiopathic calcinosis cutis, which is characterized by milia-like papulae generally located on the limbs (especially hands and feet) and sometimes associated with syringomas around lesions or on the eyelids.
OBSERVATION: A 6 year old trisomic girl had about ten round shaped hard white-yellowish papules with a diameter of 2-3 mm on both palms of her hands. The biological balance and immunologic tests gave normal values. The histopathologic pattern was compatible w…

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Calcinosis cutis, also known as calcification in soft tissue, is an uncommon benign condition that can be further classified into idiopathic, dystrophic, iatrogenic, metastatic, and calciphylaxis subtypes. The scrotum is one area where calcinosis cutis frequently occurs. During years or decades, the nodules gradually enlarge. The scrotal calcinosis cutis can be solitary or multiple, typically asymptomatic, hard, yellowish marble-like, polypoidal. Despite being benign, patients with this condition present late due to shyness or cancer anxiety, even when faced with s…

BACKGROUND: Systemic scleroderma is a disorder of unknown etiology with skin sclerosis. Its major histological features are swollen and homogenized collagen bundles.
OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: We describe 2 patients with systemic sclerosis who have multiple umbilicated nodules indistinguishable from calcinosis cutis.
RESULTS: Histological examinations including Von Kossa staining revealed features of perforating granuloma annulare, but not of calcinosis cutis.
CONCLUSION: The association may not be fortuitous but both diseases may be etiologically related.

INTRODUCTION: Calcinosis cutis is classically described in patients presenting chronic renal failure with secondary hyperparathyroidism. There are three clinical types described in the literature: cutaneous necrosis (secondary to vascular calcification), panniculitis with calcification of the adipose tissue and necrosis of the skin and dermo-hypodermic calcinosis without necrosis usually called metastatic calcinosis. The latter can affect all tissues but skin involvement is rare.
CASE REPORT: A case of calcinosis cutis is presented in a 50 years old woman with moderate secondary hyperparathyr…

Idiopathic calcinosis cutis involving the breast is a rare condition. Previously reported cases were detected by mammography without specific cutaneous findings. We report a case of idiopathic calcinosis of the areola of the nipple in a 32-year-old Korean woman that has unique clinical features resembling scrotal calcinosis.

Calcinosis cutis involves the inappropriate deposition of calcium within the dermis layer of the skin and is often associated with autoimmune diseases. A 3-year-old healthy Omani child presented for evaluation of asymptomatic hard nodule on the left upper eyelid. Pathological examination identified the mass as subepidermal calcified nodule. The patient had no history of trauma or metabolic disturbances. Serum levels of calcium and phosphate were normal. Idiopathic calcinosis cutis should be included in the differential diagnosis for eye lid mass.

Calcinosis cutis is represented by the deposition of insoluble calcium salts in the skin and subcutaneous tissue. Calcinosis can lead to repeated episodes of local inflammation and repeated infections, resulting in pain and functional disability, and even death. Here, we present a case of a patient with SSc who experienced calcinosis universalis and eventually died from recurrent infections at the sacrococcygeal calcification.
