The biological effect of CdTe quantum dots (QDs) on Halobacterium halobium R1 (H. halobium R1) growth was analyzed by a microcalorimetric technique. By using a TAM air eight channels microcalorimeter, the thermogenic curves of H. halobium R1 growth were obtained at 37 °C. Staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB) is an exotoxin produced by Staphylococcus aureus and commonly associated with food poisoning. In this study, SEB-binding peptides were identified by screening a phage displayed peptide library. The binding of peptides to SEB was tested with isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and of the five selected peptides, three showed affinity to SEB, with one measured to have the highest affinity constant (10(5) M(-1)). The authors suggests a modified method for nonchromatographic measurement of urinary lactose. The minimal detectable lactose volume is 0.5 g/l. Eighty-four children, mostly babies, with lactose intolerance were examined, breast-fed or formula-fed with lactose-containing mixtures. Lactosuria was detected in 27.4% of the examinees. Urinary lactose levels were (mean +/- m) 0.69 +/- 0.02 g/l. No lactosuria was detected by this method in 29 babies without lactose tolerance (control group).

The interactions of Aspergillus flavus uricase with the substrates O2 and urate and the inhibitors xanthine, cyanide, periodate and hydroxylamine were investigated.
