About 13% of all cancers around the world are associated with infectious agents, particularly in low-resource settings. The main infectious agents associated with cancer are Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), that causes gastric cancer, human papillomavirus (HPV) that causes cervical, vulvar, vaginal, penile, anal, and oropharyngeal cancer, hepatitis B and C viruses that cause liver cancer, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), associated with cancers of the cervix, Kaposi sarcoma (KS) and non-Hodgkin´s lymphoma. In Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), about 150,000 cancer cases are caused a

OBJECTIVES: Cocaine dependence has a strong heritability component. The aim of this study was to investigate the putative association between the serotonin 2B receptor gene (HTR2B), crack use disorders and impulsivity.
METHODS: A French Afro-Caribbean male population of patients with crack use disorders (n = 80) was compared to healthy Afro-Caribbean male controls (n = 60). Comorbid ADHD and impulsivity were assessed. Five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the HTR2B gene were selected: rs643700, rs6736017, rs1549339, rs17586428 and rs3806545. These SNPs were chosen to include most of

The decline in marine and freshwaters catches in recent years in Colombia has led to a change in dietary habits, with an increase in the purchase and consumption of imported fish. This is of particular concern as fish are sometimes caught in mercury-contaminated waters, and are subsequently sold canned or uncanned. In addition, canned tuna has received little attention as it is widely assumed that concentrations are low. In this study, total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations were evaluated in three imported fish species marketed in Colombia, Prochilodus lineatus, Prochilodu

The lionfish, Pterosis volitans, a native of Indo-Pacific oceans, is a popular saltwater aquarium fish despite venomous spines on its fins. Lionfish were inadvertently introduced into the western Atlantic from Florida in the early 1990s and have overpopulated and dispersed widely into the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico. Initiatives to control lionfish populations were launched, including the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)-sponsored "Lionfish as Food Campaign".2 Recently, scientists from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that lionfish caught off the

Bacterial cultures and chemical analyses were performed from cloacal and oral swabs taken from 43 American crocodiles Crocodylus acutus and 28 Morelet's crocodiles C. moreletii captured in Quintana Roo State, Mexico. We recovered 47 bacterial species (28 genera and 14 families) from all samples with 51.1% of these belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae. Fourteen species (29.8%) were detected in both crocodile species and 18 (38.3%) and 15 (31.9%) species were only detected in American and Morelet's crocodiles, respectively. We recovered 35 bacterial species from all oral samples, of which

In Latin America and the Caribbean, around 195 million people live in poverty, a situation that increases the burden of some infectious diseases. Neglected diseases, in particular, are often restricted to poor, marginalized sections of the population. Tools exist to combat these diseases, making it imperative to work towards their elimination. In 2009, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) received a mandate to support the countries in the Region in eliminating neglected diseases and other poverty-related infections. The objective of this study is to analyze the presence of selected dise

OBJECTIVE: The main objective was to know social representations about child maltreatment (severity, etiology, and intervention strategies) of the general population and the professionals working with children in the Caribbean area of Colombia.
METHOD: Sample was composed for 402 participants. From this pool of participants, 111 of them were working in child protection, 95 worked with children but not in the child protection system and 196 pertained to the general population. All participants answered to a questionnaire composed by 86 items. The questionnaire was developed to assess (1) the p

Four serotypes of dengue viruses produce dengue fever, dengue hemorrhagic fever, and dengue shock syndrome. They are the most important arbovirus infections of humans, in terms of both morbidity and mortality, constituting one of the most rapidly expanding and re-emerging infectious disease problems in Latin America. In less than 20 years, the region has transformed itself from hypoendemic to hyperendemic, while serotype circulation in most countries has gone from none or single to multiple. Changes in endemicity have coincided with the emergence and increasing incidence of the severer forms o

Tainos and Caribs were the inhabitants of the Caribbean when Columbus reached the Americas; both human groups became extinct soon after contact, decimated by the Spaniards and the diseases they brought. Samples belonging to pre-Columbian Taino Indians from the La Caleta site (Dominican Republic) have been analyzed, in order to ascertain the genetic affinities of these groups in relation to present-day Amerinds, and to reconstruct the genetic and demographic events that took place during the peopling of the Caribbean. Twenty-seven bone samples were extracted and analyzed for mtDNA variation. Th

Sickle cell disease, one of the world's most common genetic disorders is prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa. The trans-Atlantic slave trade accounted for the gene movement from Africa to the Caribbean and United States of America and lately, migration has resulted in the introduction of the gene to the United Kingdom and other parts of Europe. Different haplotypes exist, however the differences in these haplotypes are not sufficient to explain the different clinical variations within the same region or different settings.

AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Excess type 2 diabetes mellitus in minority ethnic groups remains unexplained, although greater fat mass makes a strong contribution. We hypothesised that height and weight through infancy in South Asian and Black African/Caribbean subgroups is more adverse than in White populations. These, allied to poor socioeconomic position, determine greater fat mass at age 7 years.
METHODS: We report a secondary analysis from the UK Millennium Cohort Study, including 12,280 births of White ethnicity, and 358 of Indian, 650 of Pakistani, 268 of Bangladeshi, 163 of Black Caribbean and 277

INTRODUCTION: Tobacco smoking is a major modifiable risk factor for bladder and kidney cancer. In Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), comprehensive longitudinal evidence on the smoking-attributable burden of these cancers remains limited. This study assessed the burden, temporal trends, socioeconomic inequalities, and future projections of smoking-attributable bladder and kidney cancer in LAC.
METHODS: Data were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2023 study to estimate deaths, disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR), and age-standardized

Ciguatera Fish Poisoning is a worldwide concern caused by the consumption of fish contaminated with ciguatoxins not only in endemic regions in the Pacific Ocean or the Caribbean Sea but also in emerging areas of Macaronesia on the eastern Atlantic. The recent emergence of these toxins in other coastal areas worldwide, prompted the need for the characterization of the risk in these areas. This Ciguatera Fish Poisoning risk has been recently identified as a potential threat in subtropical areas of the Atlantic coast and scientific efforts are being focused in the identification and confirmation

An estimated 100 million people in the Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) region live on less than US$2 per day, while another 46 million people in the US live below that nation's poverty line. Almost all of the 'bottom 100 million' people suffer from at least one neglected tropical disease (NTD), including one-half of the poorest people in the region infected with hookworms, 10% with Chagas disease, and up to 1-2% with dengue, schistosomiasis, and/or leishmaniasis. In the US, NTDs such as Chagas disease, cysticercosis, toxocariasis, and trichomoniasis are also common among poor populations. T

Epidemiologic studies indicate that human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I), the causative agent of most cases of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) in Southeast Japan and the Caribbean islands and the probable cause of a progressive neurological disorder often referred to as tropical spastic paraparesis, occurs with unusual geographic clustering. The current large-scale serosurvey was undertaken to improve our understanding of HTLV-I prevalence in different parts of the world. We analyzed 43,445 serum samples collected from various geographic locales worldwide; 76% of these sera ca

SUMMARY: We determined factors associated with serum sclerostin in 446 Afro-Caribbean family members. Age, weight, sex, diabetes and kidney function were associated with sclerostin. Sclerostin was heritable, and nine SNPs in the SOST gene region were associated with sclerostin. Variation in serum sclerostin is a heritable factor that is determined by both genetic and environmental factors.
INTRODUCTION: Sclerostin, encoded by the SOST gene, is a Wnt inhibitor that regulates bone mineralization and is a candidate gene locus for osteoporosis. However, little is known about the genetic and non-g

Across Latin American and Caribbean countries (LACs), the fight against dementia faces pressing challenges, such as heterogeneity, diversity, political instability, and socioeconomic disparities. These can be addressed more effectively in a collaborative setting that fosters open exchange of knowledge. In this work, the Latin American and Caribbean Consortium on Dementia (LAC-CD) proposes an agenda for integration to deliver a Knowledge to Action Framework (KtAF). First, we summarize evidence-based strategies (epidemiology, genetics, biomarkers, clinical trials, nonpharmacological intervention
