Cat-scratch Disease.

Cat-scratch disease is a common infection that usually presents as tender lymphadenopathy. It should be included in the differential diagnosis of fever of unknown origin and any lymphadenopathy syndrome. Asymptomatic, bacteremic cats with Bartonella henselae in their saliva serve as vectors by biting and clawing the skin. Cat fleas are responsible for horizontal transmission of the disease from cat to cat, and on occasion, arthropod vectors (fleas or ticks) may transmit the disease to humans. Cat-scratch disease is commonly diagnosed in children, but adults can present with it as well. The cau…

Hyperaldosteronism and hyperprogesteronism in a cat.

The putative mechanism is either increased secretion of aldosterone and progesterone from neoplastic cells of the zona glomerulosa and fasciculata/reticularis, respectively, o …

Cutaneous nocardiosis in a cat.

A 4-year-old spayed female domestic shorthair cat was presented to us for swelling of all foot pads. The skin lesions were histopathologically diagnosed as suppurative pyogranulomatous panniculitis. The lesions did not respond to cephalexin, prednisolone or itraconazole. However, complete resolution of the skin lesions was obtained with doxycycline. A littermate living in the same household developed similar skin lesions that were also successfully treated with doxycycline. Polymerase chain reaction analysis detected the 16S ribosomal RNA gene of Nocardia spp. in DNA extracted from lesion pus,

[Rabies in a cat in Greenland].

We describe the first case of rabies diagnosed in a cat in Greenland. The cat showed aggressive behaviour one month after the visit of a rabid fox on the premises. Rabies is enzootic in Greenland, the arctic fox being the natural host of rabies virus. Cats are imported in increasing numbers to Greenland and the reported case stresses the need for concern in relation to a hitherto unrecognised risk of exposure to rabies virus and stresses the need to comply with the obligatory anti-rabies vaccination regimes for cats in Greenland.

Sézary syndrome in a cat.

Sézary syndrome is an uncommon leukemic variant of cutaneous lymphoma in cats. This cat had recurrent dermatitis with erythematous, pruritic plaques. Multiple skin imprints and biopsy samples were obtained over a 6-month period, and histopathological findings were consistent initially with eosinophilic miliary dermatitis and later with erythema multiforme. One week before death, Sézary cells were identified in the peripheral blood that expressed cluster of differentiation (CD)3 and CD8 antigens. Massive infiltration of CD3+ lymphocytes was noted in the skin and multiple internal tissues by his…

Vulvar leiomyosarcoma in a cat.

A vulvar leiomyosarcoma was diagnosed in an 8-year-old mixed-breed, sexually intact cat. The cat had a history of vulvar swelling, bleeding and stranguria. The mass was located at the ventral commissura of the vulva. The cut surface of the mass was lobulated and greyish-white, with areas of necrosis and haemorrhage. Histologically, it was a spindle-cell sarcoma consisting of interlacing bundles of very elongated neoplastic smooth muscle cells and variably dense collagenous matrix separated by individual cells or streams. It also contained areas of focal necrosis and haemorrhage. The mitotic in

Cat scratch colon.

BACKGROUND: Bright red linear marks in the right colon are occasionally seen but have never been described in the medical literature. We have termed this finding "cat scratch" colon. METHODS: This was a prospective examination of 8277 colonoscopies at a single endoscopy center in a private practice setting. All cases of cat scratch colon were biopsied, and the results read by two pathologists. RESULTS: A total of 21 cases of cat scratch colon were identified, all in the ascending colon and cecum, with a prevalence of 0.25%. The majority of cases were in women. Although the colon was histolog

[Cat-scratch disease].

OBJECTIVE: To study the etiology, epidemiology, clinical and pathological features, diagnose and treatment of cat-scratch disease(CSD). METHOD: The clinical information of 1 case was reported and the literatures were also reviewed. RESULT: Bartonella henselae was the primary pathogen of CSD. Almost all patients with CSD were in contact with animals, especially cat or dog before the occurrence of the disease. All the patients had the self-limited swelling of local lymph nodes and commonly a fever. The pathological feature was necrotic granulation-like micro abscessation, and a pleomorphous ar

Generalized osteosclerosis in a cat.

A 12-year-old, neutered male, domestic long-hair cat was evaluated for a 6-month history of inspiratory stertor and epiphora. In computed tomography of the skull and pelvis, and radiographs of the thorax, right femur and stifle there was generalized osteosclerosis, with obliteration of the nasal turbinates and nasolacrimal duct obstruction. The cat also had a large fibrosarcoma involving the right pelvic limb. Osteosclerosis is a rare disorder that is poorly understood but has been described in several species. Various manifestations, potential causes, and radiologic findings of osteosclerosis

The metacestode of Taenia solium, Cysticercus cellulosae, was recovered from the brain of a cat showing central nervous clinical signs ante mortem. This is the first record of cerebral cysticercosis in a cat in South Africa.

Laparoscopic cryptorchidectomy in a cat.

Several techniques for castration of cryptorchid cats have been described. In this case report, the use of laparoscopy for castration of a bilateral cryptorchid cat (with testes located in the abdomen) is described. Three trocars were inserted into the abdominal cavity, the testicles were easily identified adjacent to the urinary bladder. Haemostasis of the gubernaculum testis and spermatic cord was achieved with bipolar cauterisation. The testicles were easily removed in approximately 20 min. To the authors' knowledge this is the first report of the use of laparoscopy for the treatment of cry…

Auricular chondritis in a cat.

A four-year-old male neutered domestic shorthaired cat developed bilateral thickening of the pinnae, with slight curling, intense erythema and pain. No ear canal disease was present. The cat was negative for feline immunodeficiency virus, feline leukaemia virus and feline coronavirus. Biopsy of the ear lesion revealed auricular chondritis. In humans, histologically similar lesions may involve the pinnae, nose, trachea, joints, eyes and heart, and the disease is termed relapsing polychondritis. The cat reported had a history of corneal damage, resulting in corneal vascularisation and opacity, e

Rhinosporidiosis in a domestic cat.

Rhinosporidiosis was diagnosed in a domestic shorthair cat from a suburb of Washington DC, USA. The clinical presentation of protracted sneezing and epistaxis was associated with a polypoid lesion in the right nostril. Light microscopic examination revealed a polypoid lesion with numerous sporangia containing maturing endospores. Free endospores were present in the stroma of the polyp and lumen of the nasal cavity. Transmission electron microscopy revealed ultrastructural features typical of Rhinosporidium seeberi. The case was followed clinically for a total of 70 months and there were five a
