Cave 1B, in the Klasies River Main site complex (KRM), is best known for the recovery of the KRM 41815/SAM-AP 6222 human mandible. After initial skepticism over the modernity of this specimen, it is accepted that the mix of archaic and modern traits it displays is characteristic of early Homo sapiens individuals. Different authors have associated this specimen with the Middle Stone Age (MSA) I and II/Mossel Bay cultural phases, but the published data do not allow an unambiguous attribution. KRM 41815's frequent use in studies of the evolution of the human mandible, and its well-developed chin,

Many anatomical variants can potentially contribute to trigeminal neuralgia. These include compression by the superior cerebellar artery and less commonly, bony compression near the trigeminal cave. Herein, we report the gross and histological findings of a cadaveric specimen found to have a bony roof of the trigeminal cave. During the routine dissection of a male cadaver, an unusual finding of the skull base was observed. Palpation over the porus trigeminus identified a completely ossified roof. The bony spicule was 1.22 cm long and 0.76 mm wide. The trigeminal nerve was noted to have an inde

Denisovans contributed notably to the genomes of present-day East and Southeast Asians. However, the relationship between the inhabited paleohabitats and the adaptive genetic traits related to infections in modern humans remains underexplored. This study uses geospatial techniques to analyze climatic factors associated with three Denisovan archaeological sites linked to nine specimens. Additionally, past and present climates and biomes, as well as the geographic distributions of eight infectious agents and disease vector groups, were modeled and compared with the modern genetic heritage of Den

A case of left trigeminal palsy caused by triventricular hydrocephalus and completely recovered after ventriculo peritoneal shunt is reported. The case was studied by MR before and after the operation. Preoperative MR showed triventricular hydrocephalus with marked reduction of the left Meckel's cave. Following ventriculo peritoneal shunt the patient showed a complete recovery of the left 5th nerve palsy and NR showed the expansion of the left Meckel's cave. The authors suggest that the trigeminal palsy was due to intracranial hypertension probably associated to a weakness of the lateral wall

Loxosceles adelaida spiders (Araneae, Sicariidae) are found near and inside the caves in the Parque Estadual Turistico do Alto Ribeira (PETAR), Sao Paulo, Brazil, which are visited by thousands of tourists every year. Several Loxosceles species are a public health problem in many regions of the world, by causing severe dermonecrosis and/or complement dependent haemolysis upon envenomation. The aim of this study was to characterize the biochemical and biological properties of L. adelaida venom and evaluate the toxic potential of envenomation by this non-synanthropic Loxosceles species. The biol…

OBJECTIVE: Successful resection of dumbbell-shaped trigeminal schwannomas via a subtemporal interdural approach requires an understanding of both the anatomy related to the bone dissection of the petrous apex (Kawase's triangle or quadrilateral) and meningeal anatomy. We studied the meningeal anatomy related to this approach and describe the dural incisions and stepwise mobilization.
METHODS: Meningeal anatomy around Meckel's cave and porus trigeminus was examined during the subtemporal interdural anterior transpetrosal approach in both sides of 15 cadaveric heads. Histological study of the M

Eidinemacheilus, new genus, is described for the troglomorphic Noemacheilus smithi Greenwood. The sole species of the genus is endemic to an aquifer in the Karun River drainage in the Iranian Zagros Mountains. Eidinemacheilus smithi was identified as a species in Paracobitis as both genera share an elevated dorsal adipose crest, a character state being widespread in nemacheilid loaches. Eidinemacheilus is distinguished from all other genera of Nemacheilidae in the Middle East by having 7+7 branched caudal-fin rays, a strongly reduced head canal system, no pigmentation and no eyes. Eidinemachei

Bear bones and Paleolithic stone artefacts often co-occur in Pleistocene cave deposits of Eurasia, raising the question of how these associa … linked in time to human activities there. The second hypothesis proposes that random bear deaths in caves resulted from hunting by humans or other large predators, implying a temporal link between them; the expectation of a nonselective age pattern in this circumstance arises from the fact that the individual characters of hibernating bears are hidden f …

Feral Pigeons have colonised all corners of the Earth, having developed a close association with humans and their activities. The wild ancestor of the Feral Pigeon, the Rock Dove, is a species of rocky habitats, nesting typically on cliff ledges and at the entrance to large caves. This habit would have brought them into close contact with cave-dwelling humans, a relationship usually linked to the development of dwellings in the Neolithic. We show that the association between humans and Rock Doves is an ancient one with its roots in the Palaeolithic and predates the arrival of modern humans int…

Recalcitrant trigeminal neuralgia following surgical treatment can be a life-altering condition. To explore alternative anatomic reasons for such a complication, the authors examined the potential for nerve connections between the sensory and motor roots of the trigeminal nerve at the opening of Meckel's cave (porus trigeminus). In 15 embalmed adult cadavers (30 sides), the authors performed microdissection of the skull base and specifically at the opening of Meckel's cave. Two sides (6.67%) were found to have interneural connections between the sensory and motor roots at Meckel's cave. These

Loss-of-function alleles are a pertinent source of genetic variation with the potential to contribute to adaptation. Cave-adapted organisms exhibit striking loss of ancestral traits such as eyes and pigment, suggesting that loss-of-function alleles may play an outsized role in these systems. Here, we leverage 141 whole genome sequences to evaluate the evolutionary history and adaptive potential of single nucleotide premature termination codons (PTCs) in Mexican tetra. We find that cave populations contain significantly more PTCs at high frequency than surface populations. We also find that PTC

Evolution in similar environments often leads to convergence of behavioral and anatomical traits. A classic example of convergent trait evolution is the reduced traits that characterize many cave animals: reduction or loss of pigmentation and eyes. While these traits have evolved many times, relatively little is known about whether these traits repeatedly evolve through the same or different molecular and developmental mechanisms. The small freshwater fish, Astyanax mexicanus, provides an opportunity to investigate the repeated evolution of cave traits. A. mexicanus exists as two forms, a sigh

We here provide the first comprehensive analysis and discussion on prey consumed by the European cave salamanders of the genus Speleomantes. Our study stems from the need to shed light on the still unknown foraging behavior adopted by Speleomantes cave salamanders. Starting from the published datasets on gut contents from all Speleomantes species (including hybrids), we here discuss additional information (i.e., species ecology, lower taxonomic level), which were systematically omitted from those data sets. We analyzed a data set consisting of 17,630 records from 49 categories of consumed prey

The organisms were exposed to five concentrations of NaCl for 96 h and afterwards the immobility, mortality, and electron transfer system (ETS) activity (a measure for metabolic rate of animals) were evaluated. As expected, the most toler …

The epidemiology of histoplasmosis duboisii (African histoplasmosis) is not well understood. The present study was carried out to investigate the prevalence of skin sensitivity and to determine by immunodiffusion the presence of antibodies among humans to histoplasmin around a recently discovered natural focus of Histoplasma capsulatum var. duboisii in a bat cave in Ogbunike in the Anambra State of Nigeria. Out of the 40 subjects, all young adults aged 18-30 years, comprising cave guides, traders and farmers examined in the immediate vicinity of the cave, 14 (35.0%) gave a positive skin test.
