A Never Described Variant of the Cervical Rib Causing Arterial Thoracic Outlet Syndrome: World's First Case.

Cervical ribs, also known as Eve's ribs, are rare and found in 1% of population. They are more common in females and more common on right side. They are asymptomatic in 90% of cases. Cervical rib fused with transverse process of sixth vertebra is rarer. We present a case of dry gangrene of lateral three fingers with right radial and subclavian artery thrombosis with rest pain, due to right cervical rib fused with transverse process of sixth vertebra. After development of line of demarcation of the dry gangrene, patient was operated for excision of cervical rib and sixth cervical vertebral tran

A Case Report of Klippel-Feil Syndrome Presenting as Tetraplegia.

Cervical spine assessment is an important step in patients who sustained trauma. Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS) is a complex syndrome with an abnormal fusion of cervical vertebrae at C2 and C3, which is caused by a failure in the division or normal segmentation of the cervical spine vertebrae in early fetal development. This condition leads to a characteristic appearance of a short neck, low hairline, facial asymmetry, and limited neck mobility. People with congenital defects like KFS are more prone to cervical spine injury. KFS is a relatively rare disease. Trivial trauma can lead to neurologic …

Multilevel Pedicular Osteotomies for En Bloc Resection of a Primary Ewing Sarcoma of the Subaxial Cervical Spine with Pedicle Screw Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Primary Ewing sarcoma of the mobile spine is a rare disease. Its management requires careful surgical planning, because radical, margin-free excision is directly correlated with prognosis. Extensive bone removal in the cervical spine can lead to instability and cause postoperative iatrogenic cervical deformity. Thus, spinal instrumentation plays an important role in restoring postresection spinal stability and improving quality of life. METHODS: We present a novel technique that allows successful removal of a large Ewing sarcoma of the subaxial cervical spine, infiltrating and tra

Comparison between the coronal diameters of the cervical spinal canal and spinal cord measured using computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging in Korean patients.

BACKGROUND: If the proportion of the spinal cord in the epidural space can be determined under C-arm fluoroscopy during cervical epidural bl … tively. RESULTS: The spinal cord to spinal canal diameter ratio was the highest at the 4th and 5th cervical vertebrae (0.64 ± 0.07) and the lowest at T1 (0.55 ± 0.06, 99% CI [0.535, 0.565]. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that the cord to canal transverse diameter ratio could be used as a reference to reduce direct spinal cord injuries during cervical epidural b …

An unusual case of extensive contiguous cervicothoracic spinal tuberculosis involving fourteen damaged segments: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Cervicothoracic spinal tuberculosis (CTSTB) is a rare and disabling disease involving the mobile, transitional zone between th … cothoracic junction has anatomical and clinical peculiarities, as a reversal of the mobile-lordotic cervical vertebrae to rigid-kyphotic thoracic vertebrae occurs at this location. Most CTSTB involves only two segments; however, in this case, we found a very extensive case wherein there were fourteen damaged segments. CONCLUSIONS: Our report demonstrates one of the …

A case report of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis in a patient with Klippel-Feil syndrome—a familial occurrence: a potential role of TGF-β signaling pathway.

The rationale for this article is a description of a unique, familial case of a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disorder of unknown etiology coexisting with Klippel-Feil syndrome (KFS), a congenital malformation of cervical vertebrae, characterized by a fusion of minimum 2 cervical vertebrae. We report a 68-year-old man with moderate dysarthria, fasciculations, short neck, hearing deficit, and low posterior hairline. Definite ALS was diagnosed based on neurological abnormalities and electromyography results. Magnetic resonance imaging and compu…

Osteophytes in the Cervical Vertebral Bodies (C3-C7)-Demographical Perspectives.

Vertebral osteophytes are an age-dependent manifestation of degenerative changes in the spine. We aimed to determine the prevalence and seve … superior discal surface of the lower one. Osteophytes prevalence is sex-dependent only in the upper cervical vertebrae (C3-C4), and age- and ethnicity-dependent for all vertebrae. Anat Rec, 302:226-231, 2019. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Anterior stabilization for acute fractures and non-unions of the dens.

The dens can be reached and directly stabilized from an anterior cervical approach, provided that x-ray image intensification is employed. Through this approach, twelve delayed unions and non-unions of the dens were treated with a bone graft impacted into a trough in the body of the second cervical vertebra and into a canal in the dens, together with a concomitant posterior arthrodesis. Fifteen additional fractures of the dens were stabilized with compression screws, introduced from the anteroinferior margin of the second cervical vertebra into the dens. Four of these fractures had delayed uni

A new long-necked archosauromorph from the Guanling Formation (Anisian, Middle Triassic) of southwestern China and its implications for neck evolution in tanystropheids.

A long neck is an evolutionary innovation convergently appearing in multiple tetrapod lineages, including groups of plesiosaurs, non-archosa … rising a partial neck and an incompletely preserved skull. The long neck is composed of at least 18 cervical vertebrae. The dentition suggests that this new taxon most likely represents an aquatic piscivore, similar to Dinocephalosaurus and Tanystropheus hydroides. Despite possessing a high number of cervical vertebrae, Gracilicollum gen. nov. is recovered as a tany …

Vertebral orientations and muscle activation patterns during controlled head movements in cats.

The focus of these experiments was to determine the relationships between head movement, neck muscle activation patterns, and the positions and movements of the cervical vertebrae. One standing cat and one prone cat were trained to produce voluntary sinusoidal movements of the head in the sagittal plane. Video-opaque markers were placed on the cervical vertebrae, and intramuscular patch electrodes implanted in four muscles of the head and neck. Cinefluoroscopic images of cervical vertebral motion and electromyographic responses were simultaneously recorded. Analysis of the spinal movement reve…

Does normalized signal intensity of cervical discs on T2 weighted MRI images change in whiplash patients?

PURPOSE: We tested the hypothesis that whiplash trauma leads to changes of the signal intensity of cervical discs in T2-weighted images. METHODS AND MATERIALS: 50 whiplash patients (18-65 years) were examined within 48h after motor vehicle accident, and again after 3 and 6 months and compared to 50 age- and sex-matched controls. Signal intensity in ROI's of the discs at the levels C2/3 to C7/T1 and the adjacent vertebral bodies were measured on sagittal T2 weighted MR images and normalized using the average of ROI's in fat tissue. The contrast between discs and both adjacent vertebrae was cal

Combined Ultrasound- and Fluoroscopy-guided Percutaneous Cementoplasty and Ablation for a C2 Pathologic Fracture: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Vertebral augmentation techniques are widely reported and effective for vertebral body fractures related to the thoracic and lumbar spine. However, techniques for accessing the cervical spine for vertebral augmentation purposes are limited. Historical approaches lack image guidance and/or involve open surgery. Our case involves a previously unreported, fully image-guided approach to the second cervical vertebra for ablation and vertebroplasty. CASE REPORT: A 52-year-old male with a history of renal cell carcinoma presented with acute, intractable neck pain. Computed tomography o

Targeted disruptions of the murine Hoxa-4 and Hoxa-6 genes result in homeotic transformations of components of the vertebral column.

It is becoming clear that Hox genes, which encode transcription factors of the Antennapedia homeodomain family, are key players in establishing the body plan of mammalian embryos. They have already been implicated in the formation of the central nervous system, tissues derived from neural crest, the vertebral column and the limbs. In order to examine the roles of hoxa-4 and hoxa-6 during development, mice with targeted disruptions in these genes were generated. Each shows homeotic transformation of cervical vertebrae, at positions that approximate the anterior borders of expression of these ge…

A Case of Duplicated Right Vertebral Artery.

We encountered a case of duplicated right vertebral artery during an anatomical dissection course for medical students in 2015. Two vertebral arteries were found in the right neck of a 91-year-old female cadaver. The proximal leg of the arteries arose from the area between the right subclavian artery and the right common carotid artery that diverged from the brachiocephalic artery. The distal leg arose from the right subclavian artery as expected. The proximal leg entered the transverse foramen of the fourth cervical vertebra and the distal leg entered the transverse foramen of the sixth cervi
