Common communicable diseases in the general population in France during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In France, social distancing measures have been adopted to contain the spread of COVID-19, culminating in national Lockdowns. The use of hand washing, hydro-alcoholic rubs and mask-wearing also increased over time. As these measures are likely to impact the transmission of many communicable diseases, we studied the changes in common infectious diseases incidence in France during the first year of COVID-19 circulation. We examined the weekly incidence of acute gastroenteritis, chickenpox, acute respiratory infections and bronchiolitis reported in general practitioner networks since January 2016…

While chickenpox had a mild course in 85.7% of patients in G1 and 88.6% of patients in G2, all others had a moderate course. None of the children had a severe course. A varicella eyelid rash was present in 28.6% of patients in G1 and 13.9% in G2. Among ocular findin …

Varicella-Zoster Meningitis in an Immunocompetent Male without Fever or Rash.

Varicella-Zoster virus (VZV) is a human herpesvirus that primarily causes chickenpox and can reactivate later in life. Chickenpox occurs mostly in children and is characterized by a typical generalized vesicular rash. Following the primary infection, VZV can remain latent and can reactivate decades later to produce Zoster, being more common in the elderly as well as immunosuppressed individuals. The diagnosis of both the primary and reactivation is mostly clinical from the typical rash. However, when presentations are atypical, it leads to diagnostic challenges. We report an unusual case of VZ…

Transplacental immunity to varicella-zoster virus in extremely low birthweight infants.

Sixteen infants in our intensive care nursery (ICN) were inadvertently exposed to an adult who presented the next day with chickenpox. Since a majority of the patients were extremely premature, we were concerned that they might not have received transplacental varicella-zoster virus (VZV) antibody, and consequently would be at risk for contracting chickenpox. Serum samples were obtained from each infant and examined for the presence or absence of VZV antibody. Fourteen of the 16 infants had antibody levels equal to or in excess of 1:16 by indirect fluorescent antibody, including six of eight i…

The live attenuated varicella-zoster virus vaccine vOka: Molecular and cellular biology of its skin attenuation.

Infection with varicella-zoster virus (VZV) causes chickenpox and shingles, both manifesting as a blistering skin rash. The skin is central to VZV, as the site of viral replication, transmission from cell-free virus in blisters and as the gateway to sensory nerves for establishing latency. The existing chickenpox vaccine is based on the live attenuated vOka strain and is impaired for replication in skin. While the genetics of the vOka vaccine have been extensively studied, critical gaps exist in understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms of vOka attenuation, particularly in human skin…

Human monkeypox: clinical features of 282 patients.

We present the clinical features and course of 282 patients with human monkeypox in Zaire during 1980-1985. The ages of the patients ranged from one month to 69 years; 90% were less than 15 years of age. The clinical picture was similar to that of the ordinary and modified forms of smallpox. Lymphadenopathy, occurring in the early stage of the illness, was the most important sign differentiating human monkeypox from smallpox and chickenpox. The symptoms, signs, and the course of the disease in patients who had been vaccinated against smallpox differed significantly from those in unvaccinated s…

[Vaccination status in psoriasis patients on immunosuppressant therapy (including biologics)].

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the vaccine coverage of psoriasis patients prior to initiating or changing immunosuppressant therapy, and to verify that the prescribed vaccines have been administered. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We conducted a bi-centre, observational, cross-sectional study over 9 months. Psoriasis patients in whom immunosuppressant therapy (comprising cyclosporine, methotrexate, etanercept, infliximab, adalimumab or ustekinumab) was indicated were included. [Acute cerebellar ataxia in childhood].

Acute cerebellar ataxia of childhood is the most frequent neurological complication of chickenpox virus infection. Acute cerebellar ataxia is categorized within the group of acute postinfectious complications. The aims of this study were: (I) to evaluate the clinical presentation, management, and follow-up of children hospitalized due to acute cerebellar ataxia in a tertiary pediatric hospital, where immunization for chickenpox is not available, and (II) to describe the differential diagnosis of acute postinfectious cerebellitis. We evaluated 95 patients with acute cerebellar ataxia. The diagn…

Immunogenicity and reactogenicity of a single dose of live attenuated varicella vaccine and a booster dose of measles-mumps-rubella vaccine given concomitantly at 12 years of age.

Universal varicella-zoster virus (VZV) childhood vaccination is still debated, but adult chickenpox may be severe. It could be prevented by vaccination of seronegative adolescents. This study aimed to determine the feasibility of coadministration of a VZV vaccine and the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) booster at 12 y of age. Guardians of 1231 12-y-old pupils where asked about the history of chickenpox in their children. 190 had no chickenpox history and 12 of 62 of them lacked VZV antibodies. Additional history-negative children were also recruited. 199 history-positive children received only MMR…

Early and late onset manifestations of cerebral vasculitis related to varicella zoster.

Varicella-zoster associated cerebral vasculitis (VZCV) as a cause of cerebral infarction has hitherto been considered a rare condition. Ischemic stroke in previously healthy children has occurred during recovery from chickenpox or has been attributed to virus reactivation among immunosuppressed patients. The clinical, radiologic and immunologic findings in four children with VZCV will be reported. Clinical manifestations included sudden onset of hemiparesis, motor aphasia and disturbed consciousness in previously healthy children. Only one child had a history of chickenpox six weeks prior to t…

Outbreaks of disease suspected of being due to human monkeypox virus infection in the Democratic Republic of Congo in 2001.

Seven outbreaks of disease characterized by a pustular rash and suspected to have been caused by human monkeypox virus were investigated. In one outbreak, no evidence for either monkeypox or chickenpox was found (two cases, with no deaths).

Varicella vaccine: the American experience.

Live attenuated varicella vaccine is safe and effective in preventing chickenpox. The best immune responses occur in healthy children. Leukemic children have a 50% incidence of mild-to-moderate adverse effects but have a high degree of protection once immune reactions to varicella-zoster virus (VZV) have developed. Adult vaccinees have a lower degree of protection (70%) than children. Vaccinees who develop breakthrough varicella usually have a modified infection. Another significant advantage of vaccination is that in leukemic children it leads to a lower incidence of zoster than after natural…

Immunity to varicella zoster virus in young Israeli adults.

BACKGROUND: Chickenpox is a highly contagious childhood infection caused by varicella zoster virus, a virus of the herpes family. Although a mild and self-limiting disease in otherwise healthy children, chickenpox can be a complicated and even life-threatening disease in adults, pregnant women and immunosuppressed individuals. Among infants whose mothers had varicella during the first trimester of pregnancy, 2-3% will develop a congenital VZV syndrome that includes a combination of scarring, limb deformation, central nervous system impairment and ocular injury. In 1974, a live attenuated virus…
