Effects of deworming on child and maternal health: a literature review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Soil-transmitted helminth infections are widespread. Many studies have been published on the topic of deworming. The Lives Saved Tool (LiST) is a software package that uses a deterministic mathematical model to estimate the effect of scaling up interventions on maternal and child health outcomes. This review investigates the scope of available evidence for benefits of deworming treatments in order to inform a decision about possible inclusion of deworming as an intervention in LiST. METHODS: We searched PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar. We included studies that rep…

Impacts of family and community violence exposure on child coping and mental health.

An ecological stress process model was employed to explore relations between children's exposures to family and community violence and child mental health, and emotionally-regulated coping (ERC) as a protective factor among Latino, European-American, and African-American school-aged children (n = 91; girls, n = 50[54 %]) living in single-parent families who were either homeless and residing in emergency shelters or housed but living in poverty. Mothers reported domestic violence experiences and their child's history of physical/sexual abuse, community violence exposures, and mental health. Chi

METHODS: Medline, Embase, and the Cochrane Registry of Controlled Trials were searched from January 2006 to Apr

The concurrent and longitudinal effects of child disability types and health on family experiences.

This study examines the concurrent and longitudinal effects of children's disability types and health on family experiences, namely, parent divorce, mother's unemployment, and receipt of social welfare. The parent and school staff survey data for 1999 and 2004 from the Special Education Elementary Longitudinal Study were analyzed, when the ages of children with disabilities ranged from 6 to 17. Weighted logistic regressions using Taylor Series Linearization were used to model the concurrent associations and longitudinal association between children's disability types and health and family expe

Determinants of parental satisfaction with ultrasound hip screening in child health care.

Prior research has shown ultrasound (US) screening for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in preventive child health care to be more effective than the current screening method. In the present study, 3-month-old infants were screened for DDH with US. The objective of this study was to examine parental satisfaction with the screening and determinants that affect satisfaction. Parental satisfaction was measured using a questionnaire. Independent variables included socio-demographic determinants, structure, process and outcome-related determinants and the meeting of expectations. Satisfacti…

The Nobel Prize in 2005 for the discovery of Helicobacter pylori: implications for child health.

UNLABELLED: The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2005 has been awarded to B. Marshall and R. Warren for their discovery that peptic ulcer disease is caused by an infection with Helicobacter pylori. This infection, which affects about half of the world's population and is already extremely prevalent in adolescents in developing countries, starts as an asymptomatic gastritis which, under certain conditions, is followed by gastric or duodenal ulcer disease. CONCLUSION: No proven benefit has yet been found by treating H. pylori-infected children with gastritis unless they have a peptic ul

Organochlorine pesticides and male genital anomalies in the child health and development studies.

Increasing rates of cryptorchidism and hypospadias in human populations may be caused by exogenous environmental agents. We conducted a case-control study of serum levels of p,p'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its major metabolite, p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), and cryptorchidism and hypospadias in the Child Health and Development Study, a longitudinal cohort of pregnancies that occurred between 1959 and 1967, a period when DDT was produced and used in the United States. Serum was available from the mothers of 75 male children born with cryptorchidism, 66 with hypospa…

The generational transmission of socioeconomic inequalities in child cognitive development and emotional health.

Socioeconomic inequalities in the health of adults have been largely attributed to lifestyle inequalities. The cognitive development (CD) and emotional health (EH) of the child provides a basis for many of the health-related behaviours which are observed in adulthood. There has been relatively little attention paid to the way CD and EH are transmitted in the foetal and childhood periods, even though these provide a foundation for subsequent socioeconomic inequalities in adult health. The Mater-University of Queensland Study of Pregnancy (MUSP) is a large, prospective, pre-birth cohort study wh

Variations and inconsistencies in maternal and child health indicators in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan.

As part of a community health assessment, variations in maternal and child health-related vital statistics data in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, from 1984 to 1993 were studied. Annual vital statistics reports published by the Prefectural government were used for the analysis. The following rates by public health district were calculated: abortion rate, early fetal mortality rate, late fetal mortality rate, perinatal mortality rate, neonatal mortality rate, and infant mortality rate. Maternal mortality rates were calculated for the Prefecture because of the small number of events. A few northern …

Maternal and child health services in India with special focus on perinatal services.

India has an excellent infrastructural layout for the delivery of MCH services in the community through a network of subcenters, primary health centers, community health centers, district hospitals, state medical college hospitals, and other hospitals in the public and private sectors. However, the health pyramid does not function effectively because of limited resources, communication delays, a lack of commitment on the part of health professionals, and, above all, a lack of managerial skills, supervision, and political will. The allocation of financial resources for the delivery of health ca
