Phonological and semantic priming in children with reading disability.

Lexical priming was assessed in children with reading disability (RD) and in age-matched controls (M= 11.5 years), in visual and auditory lexical decision tasks. In the visual task, children with RD were found to have deficits in semantic (SHIP-BOAT), phonological/graphemic (GOAT-BOAT), and combined (FLOAT-BOAT) priming. The same pattern of semantic priming deficits also occurred in auditory lexical decisions, suggesting that the semantic deficits are not confined to reading. Children with RD also showed less priming than reading-age matched controls, suggesting that their priming deficits are

Causes of visual disability in children and young adults.

PURPOSE: Blindness and visual disability is a great problem all over the world. Loss of visual acuity in children requires special attention. The aim of the study was to determine the causes of uni- and bilateral low vision in children and young adults. Patients were from our clinic and from the School for the Blind and Visually Impaired in Lodz. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group included 271 patients aged from 3 months to 21 years, visually disabled and with uniocular reduction of visual acuity to 25% or less. RESULTS: The commonest cause of low visual acuity in the group was optic nerv

Mothers and their disabled children: refining the concept of normalization.

Normalization refers to behaviors and intentions of the disabled to integrate into society by living life as do those without a disability. … reference groups according to the child's needs, abilities and capabilities, and the risk involved. Children with disabilities who normalize compare their abilities and capabilities to identify both within a disabled world ("like me") and the outside world, according to their needs. Normalization includes processes of identification with both the cultural dominant perceived …

Psychiatric comorbidity in children and adolescents with reading disability.

This study investigated the association between reading disability (RD) and internalizing and externalizing psychopathology in a large community sample of twins with (N = 209) and without RD (N = 192). The primary goals were to clarify the relation between RD and comorbid psychopathology, to test for gender differences in the behavioral correlates of RD, and to test if common familial influences contributed to the association between RD and other disorders. Results indicated that individuals with RD exhibited significantly higher rates of all internalizing and externalizing disorders than indi

Accidental asphyxia in bed in severely disabled children.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there are specific situations which may increase the risk of accidental asphyxia during sleep in children with physical and mental disabilities. METHODOLOGY: Review of all cases where death was attributed to accidental asphyxia caused by unsafe sleeping situations in children listed in the Department of Histopathology database over a 10-year period from March 1989 to February 1999. RESULTS: A total of 26 cases were found (M:F, 19:7; age range, 1-48 months; average age, 7.4 months). Of those cases, two involved children with significant mental and physical impa

Laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication in disabled infants and children.

During a 16-month period, 15 neurologically impaired infants and children for whom medical treatment failed underwent laparoscopic fundoplication. The indications for surgery included feeding difficulties, vomiting, and recurrent chest aspiration. The patients' weight range was 3.9 and 42 kg (6 weighed less than 12 kg). Access was modified according to each patient's size and shape. The average operating time was 2.2 hours (range, 1.4 to 3) for fundoplication and 3.1 hours (range, 2.3 to 4.1) for fundoplication with gastrostomy. Two patients had conversion to open surgery because of hypercarbi

Early identification of children at risk for reading disabilities.

The present study examined the development of phonological and reading skills in 171 students (98 males, 73 females) from the beginning of first grade (Time 1) to the end of second grade (Time 4). Based on their reading and intelligence scores at the end of second grade, these students were placed into nondisabled (ND), reading disabled (RD), or garden-variety poor reading (GV) groups. Although each group made gains in phonological processing, large differences were found between the ND and RD/GV groups. The RD and GV groups performed similarly on many of the tasks. Consistent with the literat

A defective visual pathway in children with reading disability.

BACKGROUND: The possibility that reading disability in children is associated with visual problems is in dispute. We sought to test the existence of this association by using electrophysiologic techniques to measure the processing of visual information in the magnicellular and parvicellular visual pathways of the brain. METHODS: Visual evoked potentials were measured with scalp electrodes in children 8 to 11 years old who were normal readers and in those with reading disability. The potentials were measured for targets with low (0.5 cycle per degree of visual angle) and high (4.5 cycles per d

A study of behavior modification for developmentally disabled children.

A tape-slide series, using a desensitization and modeling approach, was developed in order to prepare three- and four-year-old developmentally disabled children for an initial dental examination. The tape-slide series pleasantly describes what to expect during the first visit to the dental office. A clown and a four-year-old girl were used as models. Twenty-eight children participated in the study, divided into two groups: control and experimental. A requirement for qualification as a patient was that the child not have had any previous dental experience. Three techniques for measuring behavio

Caries experience of disabled school-age children.

A group of 415 disabled school-age children representing 10 different disabling conditions (hereafter called diagnostic groups) were examined and DMFT registered. Parents were interviewed about problems and habits relevant to dental health. The purpose was to study the relationship between different background variables and DMFT. It was assumed that the DMFT might have been influenced by both various predisposing conditions and factors of everyday life. Therefore two indices were made. A multiple classification analysis (MCA) was used to assess the relative importance of different background v

Vision and academic performance of learning disabled children.

The purpose of this study was to assess difference in academic performance among myopic, hyperopic, and emmetropic children who were learning disabled. More specifically, myopic children were expected to perform better on mathematical and spatial tasks than would hyperopic ones and that hyperopic and emmetropic children would perform better on verbal measures than would myopic ones. For 439 learning disabled students visual anomalies were determined via a Generated Retinal Reflex Image Screening System. Test data were obtained from school files. Partial support for the hypothesis was obtained.

Perceived first contact care for disabled children.

In a mail-back questionnaire survey, 169 mothers of myelodysplastic children were asked whom they would contact first for each of 24 health-related problems. These problems ranged from earaches to shunt obstruction to sexual counseling. All children were being followed in a comprehensive care clinic at a regional center; however, nearly half of these families lived in rural areas distant from the clinic. Eighty percent of children were said to have local physicians. Mothers tended to perceive clinic staff and specialists for first contact care according to severity of the child's motor paralys

Arthrodesis for disabling hip pain in children and adolescents.

A 9-year follow-up study of patients who had hip fusion for disabling hip pain in childhood suggests that arthrodesis for disabling hip pain in children is effective and well-tolerated. The patients had excellent functional results with return to normal childhood life styles, athletics, and later productive occupations. No patient wanted or needed conversion to a total hip replacement at follow-up. The fused hips adducted progressively until skeletal maturity. The surgeon should make allowances for future adduction in selecting the position of postoperative immobilization-fixation of a child's

Parenting stress in families of children with disabilities: Impact of type of disability and assessment of attending paediatricians.

BACKGROUND: Parents of children with developmental disorders (DD) or disabilities report greater parenting stress than parents of typically developing children. To minimise this stress, stressful factors need to be known and stress needs to be recognised early. The present cross-sectional study aims to systematically assess and compare parenting stress in families of children with various types of disabilities. In addition, the assessment of parenting stress by attending paediatricians will be evaluated. METHODS: We surveyed 611 parents about their parenting stress at the Children's Developme
