Synergistic melatonin and myo-inositol application reinforces antioxidant defence, osmotic homeostasis, and membrane stability in Western Himalayan apple rootstocks under drought stress.

Drought stress induces profound biochemical and physiological disturbances in apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.), including oxidative imbalance, chlorophyll degradation, osmotic disruption, and membrane injury. This study evaluated the individual and synergistic effects of two key metabolites, melatonin (MT) and myo-inositol (MI) in enhancing drought resilience across five genetically diverse apple rootstocks (MM 111, MM 106, Bud 118, MM 116, and M9). A two-phase experimental framework was implemented, beginning with metabolite dose optimisation under 40% field capacity using the Response Index

The enhanced degradation and detoxification of chlortetracycline by Chlamydomonas reinhardtii.

Nowadays, numerous studies have focused on the newly developed technologies for the thorough removal of tetracyclines (TCs). However, it is often ignored that the parent TCs have limited stability in aquatic environments. Thus, this study selected green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii with high chlorophyll content to rapidly degrade chlortetracycline (CTC) into products with low toxicity. As the results shown, the half-life times of CTC (1 × 10-6 mol/L) decreased from 10.35 h to 2.55 h by the presence of C. reinhardtii at 24±1 °C with 12/12 h dark/light cycle. The main transformation products w

A Study on the Comparative Efficacy of Anthracene Phytoremediation by Epipremnum aureum, Portulaca grandiflora and Tagetes erecta.

Excessive use of petroleum products has led to increased anthracene contamination in ecosystems, highlighting the need for effective monitoring and remediation strategies. This study evaluated the phytoremediation potential of three ornamental plant species-Epipremnum aureum, Tagetes erecta, and Portulaca grandiflora-for anthracene-contaminated soil. After 60 days of exposure to anthracene at concentrations of 25, 50, and 100 mg kg-1, various parameters including growth, chlorophyll content, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and oxidative stress-related enzyme activity-were evaluated. Results reve

Responses of nitric oxide and hydrogen sulfide in regulating oxidative defence system in wheat plants grown under cadmium stress.

We conducted a study to evaluate the interactive effect of NO and H2 S on the cadmium (Cd) tolerance of wheat. Cadmium stress considerably reduced total dry weight, chlorophyll a and b content and ratio of Fv/Fm by 36.7, 48.6, 26.7 and 19.5%, respectively, but significantly enhanced the levels of hydrogen peroxide (H2 O2 ) and malondialdehyde (MDA), endogenous H2 S and NO, and the activities of antioxidant enzymes. Exogenously applied sodium nitroprusside (SNP) and sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), donors of NO and H2 S, respectively, enhanced total plant dry matter by 47.8 and 39.1%, chlorophyll a …

Effects of high temperature coupled with high light on the balance between photooxidation and photoprotection in the sun-exposed peel of apple.

The sun-exposed peel of 'Gala' apple with or without sunburn was compared in terms of photooxidation and photoprotection, and a controlled experiment was conducted to probe the initial responses of PSII to high light and high temperature. The content of carotenoids, lutein and xanthophylls on a chlorophyll basis was higher in the sunburned peel although they were lower expressed on a peel area basis. Significant loss of beta-carotene and neoxanthin was observed relative to chlorophylls in the sunburned peel. O(2) evolution rates and the activity of key enzymes in the Calvin cycle were lower in

Copper-containing plastocyanin used for electron transport by an oceanic diatom.

The supply of some essential metals to pelagic ecosystems is less than the demand, so many phytoplankton have slow rates of photosynthetic production and restricted growth. The types and amounts of metals required by phytoplankton depends on their evolutionary history and on their adaptations to metal availability, which varies widely among ocean habitats. Diatoms, for example, need considerably less iron (Fe) to grow than chlorophyll-b-containing taxa, and the oceanic species demand roughly one-tenth the amount of coastal strains. Like Fe, copper (Cu) is scarce in the open sea, but notably hi

Suppression of both ELIP1 and ELIP2 in Arabidopsis does not affect tolerance to photoinhibition and photooxidative stress.

ELIPs (early light-induced proteins) are thylakoid proteins transiently induced during greening of etiolated seedlings and during exposure t … gy. The absence of ELIPs during greening at moderate light intensities slightly reduced the rate of chlorophyll accumulation but did not modify the extent of photoinhibition. In mature plants, the absence of ELIP1 and ELIP2 did not modify the sensitivity to photoinhibition and photooxidation or the ability to recover from light stress. This raises questions abo …

A Nuclear Mutation in Nicotiana sylvestris Causing a Thiamine-Reversible Defect in Synthesis of Chloroplast Pigments.

We report the recovery of a nuclear recessive mutation in Nicotiana sylvestris (Spegazzini and Comes) producing a conditional disruption in the pathway for synthesis of chlorophyll a and b and carotenoids which is fully reversible by exogenous thiamine (0.3 micromolar). In the absence of supplemental thiamine, chlorophyll levels declined by 50% after 5 days, and fell to undetectable levels by 11 days. Mitochondrial (KCN sensitive) respiration rates remained normal in albino leaves (80% loss of chlorophyll), suggesting that chlorosis results primarily from a deficiency of thiamine in the chloro…

Distribution patterns of aquatic birds in a high-Andean wetland in southeastern Peru: An approach based on environmental factors.

High-Andean wetlands play a crucial role in avian biodiversity conservation, serving as ecological oases in arid mountain regions. These ecosystems face increasing anthropogenic pressures, yet research remains limited, hindering conservation efforts. We investigated aquatic bird distribution patterns in Lake Piuray (southeastern Peruvian Andes) and their relationship with environmental variables like water depth and chlorophyll-a content. From December 2022 to November 2023, we conducted monthly surveys at 13 points across four lake zones representing natural and altered habitats. Using interp

A water marker monitored by satellites to predict seasonal endemic cholera.

The ability to predict an occurrence of cholera, a water-related disease, offers a significant public health advantage. Satellite based estimates of chlorophyll, a surrogate for plankton abundance, have been linked to cholera incidence. However, cholera bacteria can survive under a variety of coastal ecological conditions, thus constraining the predictive ability of the chlorophyll, since it provides only an estimate of greenness of seawater. Here, a new remote sensing based index is proposed: Satellite Water Marker (SWM), which estimates condition of coastal water, based on observed variabili

Cyanotoxin and domoic acid occurrence, relation with salinity, and potential recreational health risks in U.S. coasts in the 2015 US EPA National Coastal Condition Assessment.

In the first nationwide study of cyanotoxins in U.S. estuaries, algal toxins, cyanotoxins, chlorophyll, and salinity were measured in samples collected during the National Coastal Condition Assessment 2015. Anatoxin-a (ANAA), cylindrospermopsin (CYLS), domoic acid (DMAC), and microcystins (MCs) were detected by LC/MS/MS in 0.6, 0.9, 8.3, and 2.0 % of samples with mean concentrations of detections of 0.13, 0.13, 0.53, and 0.49 µg/L, respectively. MCs by ELISA were also evaluated, and 4.0 % of samples had measurable MCs with a mean of 0.78 µg/L. While ANAA and CYLS were detected south of 40° lat

The loss of COP1 delays senescence and inhibits root growth through modulation of sucrose allocation and availability.

CONSTITUTIVE PHOTOMORPHOGENIC 1 (COP1) participates in diverse signaling pathways that regulate plant growth and development, but its role in sucrose-mediated signaling remains unclear. Here, we show that COP1 contributes to leaf senescence and root growth by modulating sucrose allocation and availability in Arabidopsis. Under sucrose-free conditions, cop1 mutants developed chlorotic leaves with reduced chlorophyll content, impaired primary root growth, and decreased starch granule formation in root columella cells. cop1 mutants also showed reduced expression of sucrose transport- and cataboli
