A case of hip joint synovial chondromatosis with an unusual scintigraphic pattern is described. This pattern was suggestive of a hip joint destructive reactive articular process or late manifestations of avascular necrosis of the femoral head. Concurrent radiographs were normal, as were laboratory investigations. Follow-up radiographs six months later showed radiolucencies and erosive bone changes in the diseased joint. Surgical and histopathological findings revealed well developed hip synovial chondromatosis (HSC) with thickened synovium and large, loose, cartilaginous bodies occupying and w…

Two patients were evaluated for a complaint of long-standing hip pain. No etiology of their progressively disabling symptoms was found by routine diagnostic studies. Hip arthrography and arthrotomography in each case, however, demonstrated multiple intraarticular filling defects consistent with nonradiopaque loose bodies. These were subsequently confirmed at arthrotomy. Synovial chondromatosis is a rare disease in which intrasynovial cartilage metaplasia results in multiple intracapsular loose bodies. Its presence in plain radiographs is uncommon, but has been previously documented. This can a…

Analysis of 374 cases of enchondroma, 42% of which were localized in the short bones of the hand. The findings in radiology and pathology are presented and discussed, with special attention to the difficulty of classifying these tumors histologically and distinguishing them from chondrosarcoma. The recurrence rate in the short bones of the hand was 9%, and 19% in the long tubular bones. It was especially high after mere currettage of the tumor.

Calcified bodies in popliteal cysts have a characteristic radiographic appearance which can be confirmed by arthrography. Calcified bodies may arise in the true joint due to trauma, arthropathy resulting in joint destruction, or synovial osteochondromatosis. These calcified loose bodies may pass into a popliteal cyst through posterior joint-bursal communications or can arise in a popliteal cyst by chondrometaplasia. Correct radiographic interpretation will exclude soft tissue tumors and vascular lesions as differential considerations. Management of these patients will be determined by the clin…

HB-EGF, a member of the EGF superfamily, plays important roles in development and tissue regeneration. However, its functions in skeletal stem cells and skeleton development and growth remain poorly understood. Here, we used the Cre/LoxP system to ablate or express HB-EGF in Dermo1+ mesenchymal stromal cells and their progenies, including chondrocytes and osteoblast lineage cells, and bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs). Dermo1-Cre; HB-EGFf/f mice only showed a modest increase in bone mass, whereas Dermo1-HB-EGF mice developed progressive chondrodysplasia, chondroma, osteoarthritis-like joint de…

Objective Osteochondroma (OC) is the most common benign bone neoplasm. It infrequently occurs in the cranial cavity as a calcified lesion and very rarely presents in the sellar region. The present study summarizes the knowledge about OCs of the sellar region. Methods We searched the literature search for the clinical appearance of OCs and other calcified pathologies occurring in the sellar region. Results A total of 21 English-language articles published from 1961 to 2015 documented cases of calcified lesions in the sellar region including cerebral aneurysm, chondroid chordoma, chondroma, cran…

OBJECTIVE: To present the case of an intercollegiate field hockey player with an aneurysmal bone cyst of the femur and the clinical decision making necessary in the evaluation, management, surgical intervention, and positive outcome of this athlete.
BACKGROUND: A 21-year-old field hockey player presented with signs and symptoms typical of a deep thigh contusion. She had no history of direct or indirect trauma, infection, or previous injury.
DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS: Aneurysm, bone cyst, chondroma, giant cell tumor, osteochondroma, osteosarcoma, osteoid osteoma.
TREATMENT: When her symptoms pe…

Bizarre parosteal osteochondromatous proliferation (BPOP) is a surface-based bone lesion belonging to the group of benign chondrogenic tumors. The aim of this review is to familiarize the readers with imaging features and differential diagnosis of BPOP, also addressing pathological presentation and treatment options. The peak of incidence of BPOP is in the third and fourth decades of life, although it can occur at any age. Hands are the most common location of BPOP (55%), followed by feet (15%) and long bones (25%). On imaging, BPOP appears as a well-marginated mass of heterotopic mineralizati…

We present two cases of pathologic fractures extended to the metacarpal head related with enchondromas at the metacarpal neck treated by surgery. The timing of surgery varied between the two cases. The first was operated without delay, using tumor curettage and β-TCP (tricalcium phosphate) packing in the cavity, followed by internal fixation of the fracture using a screw and Kirshner wires. In the second case, tumor curettage and β-TCP packing was performed after fracture union. Favorable clinical outcomes were obtained for both cases.

We report an unusual case of avulsion of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon of the ring finger at its insertion, in combination with a pathological fracture of the distal phalanx due to enchondroma. The bone lesion was curetted and grafted using autogenous bone. The FDP tendon was reattached to the distal phalanx using the pullout technique. We describe this case in detail and discuss the surgical management through a review of literature.

Avulsion of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon with fracture of the distal phalanx is rare. Moreover, enchondroma is less frequent in the distal phalanx. We report two unusual cases of avulsion of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon at its insertion in combination with pathological fracture of the distal phalanx due to enchondroma. Curettage and bone grafting were performed for an enchondroma of the distal phalanx. The flexor digitorum profundus tendon and the avulsed bone fragment were reinserted through the bone graft into the distal phalanx using the pull-out technique. With Strickland…

Hand surgery : an international journal devoted to hand and upper limb surgery and related research : journal of the Asia-Pacific Federation of Societies for Surgery of the Hand2008eng
This case report describes the rare occurrence of a flexor digitorum profundus (FDP) avulsion of the left little finger in association with a pathological fracture of an enchondroma. The enchondroma was treated by simple curettage without bone graft. The FDP tendon was re-attached to the distal phalanx using the pull-out technique with a non-absorbable polyethylene suture. We recommend simple curettage without bone grafting in cases of enchondroma of the distal phalanx in which the bone defect is small.
