Weber-Christian disease (W-CD) is associated with relapsing nodular panniculitis and a variety of systemic findings. Renal parenchymal involvement has been rarely reported. The authors describe a case of nephrotic syndrome in an African-American man with a W-CD flare. The patient had chills and low-grade fever with painful lower extremity skin lesions. A renal biopsy demonstrated the tip variant of focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). The kidney biopsy also suggested parenchymal involvement by W-CD disease, with supportive ultrastructural findings. The synchronous W-CD flare and biopsy-p

BACKGROUND: Utilization of religious institutions is one of the strategies for HIV prevention in Uganda. There is limited data on the association between religiosity and HIV infection rates.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the association between religiosity and HIV prevalence rates among Christians.
METHODS: An unmatched case-control study was done. Data from 106 HIV positive cases and 424 HIV negative controls between 15- 24 years were analyzed.
RESULTS: Lower religiosity was associated with higher HIV infection rates when the following dimensions were analyzed: feeling guided by God in daily act

A patient with Weber-Christian disease and relapsing abdominal pain due to sterile splenic abscesses is presented. Histologically, acute and chronic inflammation with focal suppurative infiltrates of phagocytosed fat was detected in the absence of vascular or embolic disease, infection, or other apparent cause. Abdominal discomfort, an uncommon manifestation of Weber-Christian disease, usually is related to mesenteric panniculitis. Sterile splenic abscesses represent a previously undescribed complication of Weber-Christian disease, and another source of abdominal pain in this disorder. Althoug

The authors report a case of Weber-Christian disease associated with familial alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency in a 47-year-old woman. The serum alpha-1-antitrypsin level is low and the phenotype is Pi ZZ. The histological picture was consistent with Weber-Christian panniculitis, showing foci of fat cell necrosis with lipophagic granuloma and fibrosis. The same biological trait also exists in the propositus' sister who developed emphysema without cutaneous involvement. The pathogenesis probably rests on a particular reactivity to microtraumata with exacerbation of local inflammatory events due t

A patient with multifocal eosinophilic granuloma or histiocytosis X of the Hand-Schüller-Christian type was diagnosed as having hidradenitis suppurativa on the basis of ulceration and draining sinuses of the axillary, perianal, and inguinal regions. He also had diabetes insipidus and thyroid and pulmonary disease. Microscopic examination of the thyroid, lungs, and involved skin indicated massive infiltration of these organs by histiocytes and eosinophils. Ulcerations of this type are a rare manifestation of Hand-Schüller-Christian disease. Surgical excision of the involved areas with healing b
