A CD6 homolog of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) conserved binding bacteria involved in the regulation of Streptococcus agalactiae induced inflammation.

As a lymphocyte-specific surface receptor belonging to the cysteine-rich superfamily of scavenger receptors, CD6 acts as a pattern recognition receptor for microbial components and is involved in the regulation of inflammatory responses. However, the characteristics and functions of CD6 molecules in lower vertebrates represented by teleost fish are unknown. In this study, a CD6 homolog (designated OnCD6) was characterized from Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), and establishing its role as a PRRs that participates in immune recognition. OnCD6 contains an open reading frame of 1872 bp that e

Upregulation of miR-33 Exacerbates Heat-Stress-Induced Apoptosis in Granulosa Cell and Follicular Atresia of Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) by Targeting TGFβ1I1.

High temperature affects egg quality and increases follicular atresia in teleosts. The present study aimed to explore the regulated mechanism of ovary syndrome of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) exposed to heat stress. To this end, we conducted histological and biochemical analyses and integrated miRNA-target gene analyses. The histochemical analyses confirmed that heat stress promoted the apoptosis of granulosa cell and therefore resulted in increased follicular atresia in the ovary. Heat stress led to the differential expression of multiple miRNAs (miR-27e, -27b-3p, -33, -34a -133a-5p,

Can the exposure system adopted influence the results of the atrazine toxicity in hepatic tissue of fish?

The widespread use of atrazine, a herbicide used to control weeds, has contributed to the increased contamination of aquatic environments. To assess the toxicological effects of a xenobiotic on a nontarget organism in the laboratory, different models of toxicological exposure systems have been widely used. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the action of sublethal concentrations of atrazine on the hepatic histology of Oreochromis niloticus, considering two models of exposure: static (where atrazine was only added once) and semi-static (where atrazine was periodically

Inulin alleviates adverse metabolic syndrome and regulates intestinal microbiota composition in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fed with high-carbohydrate diet.

A high-carbohydrate diet could achieve a protein-sparing effect, but it may cause negative impacts on the growth condition of fish due to their poor utilisation ability of carbohydrate. How to reduce the adverse effects caused by a high-carbohydrate diet is important for the development of aquaculture. In the present study, we aimed to identify whether inulin could attenuate the metabolic syndrome caused by a high-carbohydrate diet in fish. Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) (1·19 (sd 0·01) g) were supplied with 35 % carbohydrate (CON), 45 % carbohydrate (HC) and 45 % carbohydrate + 5 g/kg i

Genomic comparison of virulent and non-virulent serotype V ST1 Streptococcus agalactiae in fish.

Streptococcus agalactiae or Group B Streptococcus (GBS) is the major pathogen causing pneumonia and meningitis in human, mastitis in dairy cows, and streptococcal disease in tilapia. Previous studies have shown that fish GBS strains are correlated with human GBS strains in evolution and might have cross-host infection ability. Although the invasive disease caused by ST1 GBS in non-pregnant adults and cows is increasing worldwide, infection of fish by ST1 GBS has not been reported. The aim of this study was to determine whether ST1 GBS was virulent in fish and to investigate the genomic charact

Infection patterns of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus L.) by two helminth species with contrasting life styles.

The larval stages of Bolbophorus sp. (digenean) and Amirthalingamia macracantha (cestode) are frequently reported in Oreochromis niloticus in Uganda. Little, however, is known about their infection patterns. This study examined the influence of habitat type, host size, and sex and weather patterns on the parasite populations in Uganda. A total of 650 fish were collected between January and November 2008 from a reservoir, cages, fishponds and a stream. The prevalence and intensity of A. macracantha and the prevalence of Bolbophorus sp. differed across the water bodies reflecting the effect of h

Density of Trematocranus placodon (Pisces: Cichlidae): a predictor of density of the schistosome intermediate host, Bulinus nyassanus (Gastropoda: Planorbidae), in Lake Malaŵi.

From the mid-1980s, we recorded a significant increase in urinary schistosomiasis infection rate and transmission among inhabitants of lakeshore communities in the southern part of Lake Malaŵi, particularly on Nankumba peninsula in Mangochi District. We suggested that the increase was due to over-fishing, which reduced the density of snail-eating fishes, thereby allowing schistosome intermediate host snails to increase to higher densities. In this article, we collected data to test this hypothesis. The density of both Bulinus nyassanus, the intermediate host of Schistosoma haematobium, and Mel

Retinal light input is required to sustain plasma melatonin rhythms in Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus niloticus.

The aim of this work was to confirm previous findings suggesting that the eyes are required for night-time melatonin production in Nile tilapia and further characterise this divergent circadian organisation. To do so, melatonin levels were firstly measured in eyecups and plasma to determine circadian patterns of melatonin production. Secondly, the effect of partial ophthalmectomy on the suppression of melatonin production was determined in vivo as well as ex vivo pineal light/dark sensitivity. Finally, to investigate whether such findings could be related to post-surgery stress, melatonin anal

Dietary pine pollen induces masculinization in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus, L. 1758) by modulating sex-biased gene expression and steroid hormone profiles.

BACKGROUND: The health and environmental risks associated with using 17-methyltestosterone hormone (MT) to produce all-male tilapia stocks limit the sustainability of aquaculture. As such, plant-based products with the potential to induce masculinisation in tilapia are gaining considerable attention as potentially safe, nature-based alternatives. However, the underlying mechanism for sex change induction by plant products remains unknown. The present study used pine pollen (PP) to study the processes modulating female-to-male sex change in three-day-old all-female Nile tilapia (Oreochromis nil

Nile tilapia skin graft as a new treatment for vaginal agenesis in androgen insensitivity syndrome: a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Androgen insensitivity syndrome (AIS) is a genetic disorder affecting 46 XY individuals, leading to varied degrees of incomplete development of sexual characteristics. In patients with vaginal agenesis who wish to engage in sexual activity, surgical interventions, such as neovaginoplasty, may be required. While traditional approaches pose drawbacks, the emergence of Nile tilapia fish skin (NTFS) for vaginal agenesis management offers a promising, cost-effective alternative. This study aims to evaluate morphofunctional outcomes in AIS patients who underwent neovaginoplasty using N

Combined effects of high-fat diet feeding and Streptococcus agalactiae infection on lipid metabolism, antioxidant status, and immune response in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

High-fat diet (HFD) and Streptococcus agalactiae are common pathogenic factors affecting tilapia health, yet their combined effects and underlying mechanisms are not well understood. To address this, we conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the potential response mechanisms in tilapia subjected to both factors. Tilapia were fed normal (NC) or high-fat diet (HFD) for 90 days, then challenged with S. agalactiae. At 48 h post-infection, blood, liver, and spleen samples were collected for biochemical parameter analysis and gene expression profiling. The results indicated that the combined treatm

Expression dynamics of antimicrobial peptides during developmental stages of Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia (GIFT), Oreochromis niloticus.

Fish are aquatic vertebrates that are free-living from their embryonic stages and are constantly in contact with the highly diverse and pathogen-rich external aquatic environment. The innate immune system of fish is non-specific and adapted to detect potential pathogens and other stress factors. They can act rapidly and effectively via their key component, the antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). The action of AMP is manifested through the regulation of its expression, and profiling the constitutive expression of key AMPs across various developmental stages in fish provides valuable insights into th
