Cradles, museums, and disequilibria: reconciling biodiversity dynamics using equilibrium theory.

Historical nonequilibrium processes are often considered the main drivers of global biodiversity patterns. We argue that while biodiversity is often out of equilibrium, the concept of equilibrium is still crucial for interpreting macroecological diversity patterns, and current confusion in the literature stems from misunderstandings concerning equilibrium dynamics. We demonstrate how an equilibrium-based framework, such as the 'Equilibrium Theory of Biodiversity Dynamics' (ETBD), illuminates diversity patterns in space and time, including the latitudinal diversity gradient, even in the out-of-

Ecological study of human brucellosis in Iran from 2000 to 2023 and the limited role of climatic factors.

Human brucellosis remains a major public health issue in endemic regions such as Iran. While climatic variables may affect transmission patterns, their role remains uncertain. This study analyzed long-term trends of human brucellosis in relation to climatic factors in Iran from 2000 to 2023. A time-series ecological design was applied using annual crude incidence rates (CIR) of brucellosis alongside climatic indicators including annual mean temperature (AMT), annual precipitation (AP), and the Standardized Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI). Correlation tests, linear regressions, an

Climatic factors drive global viral respiratory infections with regional heterogeneity: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Climate change is altering global respiratory virus transmission, yet pathogen-specific climate sensitivities remain unclear across diverse geographical settings. METHODS: We searched six databases (inception-10 May 2024) for studies quantifying associations between climate factors and virus respiratory infections (VRIs). Random-effects models pooled relative risks (RRs) per unit increase in temperature, relative humidity, precipitation, and wind speed, with climate sensitivity assessed by Köppen-Geiger zones. RESULTS: From 108 studies comprising 9.22 million VRI cases, three cli

Expansion of the Lyme Disease Vector Ixodes Scapularis in Canada Inferred from CMIP5 Climate Projections.

BACKGROUND: A number of studies have assessed possible climate change impacts on the Lyme disease vector, Ixodes scapularis. However, most have used surface air temperature from only one climate model simulation and/or one emission scenario, representing only one possible climate future. OBJECTIVES: We quantified effects of different Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) and climate model outputs on the projected future changes in the basic reproduction number (R0) of I. scapularis to explore uncertainties in future R0 estimates. METHODS: We used surface air temperature generated by a c

Historical climate change reshapes the thermal niche of Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. (Acari: Ixodidae) under uncertainty.

Climate change is altering the environmental conditions that regulate vector persistence, yet attribution remains difficult where long-term surveillance data are limited. Here, we developed a trait-based mechanistic framework to quantify climate-attributable changes in the environmental persistence potential of Rhipicephalus sanguineus s.l. using a host-delay persistence metric, RH,τ. The framework integrates temperature- and humidity-dependent development, mortality, fecundity, and dog-host availability within a factual-counterfactual climate design. Seasonal dynamics were retained by computi

Prediction of Dengue Incidence in the Northeast Malaysia Based on Weather Data Using the Generalized Additive Model.

INTRODUCTION: Dengue, a vector-borne viral illness, shows worldwide widening spatial distribution beyond its point of origination, namely, the tropical belt. The persistent hyperendemicity in Malaysia has resulted in the formation of the dengue early warning system. However, weather variables are yet to be fully utilized for prevention and control activities, particularly in east-coast peninsular Malaysia where limited studies have been conducted. We aim to provide a time-based estimate of possible dengue incidence increase following weather-related changes, thereby highlighting potential deng

Simulations of historical impacts of climate change and atmospheric chemistry on a northeastern U.S. forest ecosystem.

Climate change, land disturbance, and atmospheric chemistry have substantially impacted northeastern hardwood forests. However, it is challenging to quantify the exacerbating or mitigating interactions among these disturbances on carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and water cycling in forest ecosystems. To evaluate these effects, we applied the PnET-CN-daily model to simulate the historical patterns of C, N, and water cycling at Harvard Forest in central Massachusetts, United States. The model was run with a reconstructed historical climate and air chemistry scenario, and results were compared with fie

Predicting the current and future potential distributions of lymphatic filariasis in Africa using maximum entropy ecological niche modelling.

Modelling the spatial distributions of human parasite species is crucial to understanding the environmental determinants of infection as well as for guiding the planning of control programmes. Here, we use ecological niche modelling to map the current potential distribution of the macroparasitic disease, lymphatic filariasis (LF), in Africa, and to estimate how future changes in climate and population could affect its spread and burden across the continent. We used 508 community-specific infection presence data collated from the published literature in conjunction with five predictive environm

LSTM-Based Recurrent Neural Network Predicts Influenza-Like-Illness in Variable Climate Zones.

BACKGROUND: Influenza virus is responsible for a recurrent, yearly epidemic in most temperate regions of the world. Flu has been responsible for a high disease burden in recent years, despite the confounding presence of SARS-CoV-2. However, the mechanisms behind seasonal variance in flu burden are not well understood. This study seeks to expand understanding of the impact of variable climate regions on seasonal flu trends. To that end, three climate regions have been selected. Each region represents a different ecological zone and provides different weather patterns. METHODS: A long short-ter

A global aerosol model based on the analysis of 30-year ground measurements from AERONET (AEROEX model): Implications for satellite-derived aerosol retrievals.

The AErosol RObotic NETwork (AERONET), established in 1993, now spreads across 900 global sites, has about three decades of ground-based aerosol measurements. An aerosol model characterizes the physical and optical properties of atmospheric particles used in satellite and ground-based retrievals and climate simulations. Earlier aerosol models, developed using limited data (∼10-12 years, ∼250 sites), could not capture recent environmental shifts and associated changes in aerosol emissions driven by industrialization, land use changes, intensified wildfires, and dust storms. These changes necess

A stochastic assessment of basin hydrological dynamics for evaluating low flow probability and environmental water availability in subtropical climate.

Understanding basin hydrological dynamics is essential, as climate change-induced extreme events and water overutilization reduce water resource availability. This study shows that integrating environmental flow (E-flow), dependable flow, drought quantification, and low-flow approaches under climate change provides a comprehensive framework for assessing reliable water resources in subtropical catchments. Applying the Tennant method, flow-duration-curve-integrated probability models, a hybrid composite drought index (CDI), multiple climate change indicators, and low-flow frequency methods, the

Predicting the distribution of Ixodes ricinus in Europe: integrating microclimatic factors into ecological niche models.

Ixodes ricinus, commonly known as the castor bean tick and sheep tick, is a significant vector of various diseases, such as tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme borreliosis. Owing to climate change, the distribution and activity of I. ricinus are expected to increase, leading to an increase in the number of diseases transmitted by this species. Most distribution models and ecological niche models utilize macroclimate datasets such as WorldClim or CHELSA to map the distribution of disease-transmitting ticks. However, microclimatic factors are crucial for the activity and survival of small arthropod

An accurate mathematical model predicting number of dengue cases in tropics.

Dengue fever is a systemic viral infection of epidemic proportions in tropical countries. The incidence of dengue fever is ever increasing and has doubled over the last few decades. Estimated 50million new cases are detected each year and close to 10000 deaths occur each year. Epidemics are unpredictable and unprecedented. When epidemics occur, health services are over whelmed leading to overcrowding of hospitals. At present there is no evidence that dengue epidemics can be predicted. Since the breeding of the dengue mosquito is directly influenced by environmental factors, it is plausible tha

Fluctuations in climate and incidence of coccidioidomycosis in Kern County, California: a review.

Coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever) is a fungal infection found in the southwestern United States, northern Mexico, and some places in Central and South America. The fungi that cause it (Coccidioides immitis and Coccidioides posadasii) are normally soil dwelling, but, if disturbed, become airborne and infect the host when their spores are inhaled. It is thus natural to surmise that weather conditions, which foster the growth and dispersal of Coccidioides, must have an effect on the number of cases in the endemic areas. This article reviews our attempts to date at quantifying this relationship in

Effect of Climate Warming on Culex Mosquito Population Dynamics in Newfoundland.

Mosquitoes are important vectors of infectious diseases affecting humans and animals. In North America, Culex mosquitoes transmit West Nile virus and other arboviruses, while their persistence in temperate regions depends strongly on seasonal processes such as diapause. Temperature, rainfall, and photoperiod jointly regulate mosquito development, survival, reproduction, and seasonal activity, yet many climate-driven models do not explicitly represent diapause or interacting environmental drivers. We develop a mechanistic, stage-structured model for temperate Culex populations that includes egg

Climate Change and Reproductive Health.

Climate change is a major threat to the world's population and is due to global warming from human activities that increase atmospheric greenhouse gas levels-burning fossil fuels, industry emissions, vehicular exhaust, and aerosol chlorofluorocarbons-that trap heat in the Earth's atmosphere and adversely impact air quality. Resulting higher global temperatures, extreme weather events, and rising sea levels lead to greater frequency of wildfires and floods, which, in turn, result in population displacements and threaten air and water quality, food and water security, economic and public health

Extreme climate whiplash events drive divergent responses of mosquito-borne disease.

There is mounting concern surrounding climate change effects on human health. Vector-borne diseases-transmitted by ectotherms like mosquitos-are sensitive to abiotic conditions, and there is a significant interest in modeling their response to future climate change. However, changing climate also contributes to increasing variability and frequency of extreme weather, including "climate whiplash" events, when weather conditions abruptly shift between extremes. These events may have more immediate effects on vector-borne diseases, though they have received less attention. Here, we use the series

Cardiovascular diseases attributed to future heat and cold: A projection study of climate change impact under different scenarios in an arid region of Iran, Esfarayen.

Climate and temperature changes are among the most critical challenges for human and planetary health; however, evidence on future temperature-related health impacts remains limited in the Middle East and other arid regions. This study quantified historical and projected heat and cold-related cardiovascular morbidity (i.e., hospital admissions) in an arid region of Iran under multiple climate, population, and adaptation scenarios. Daily cardiovascular disease counts were associated with temperature using a quasi-Poisson regression within a distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM), which was the
