We describe the prenatal MR findings in a 29-week fetus with a cloacal variant (urogenital sinus and anterior placed anus) in combination with an enlarged clitoris and urethral duplication and correlate them with postnatal imaging. Fetal MR imaging permits the diagnosis and characterization of cloacal and urogenital sinus malformations in utero. This information may guide pre-, peri- and postnatal management.

We are reporting the second lethal case of G syndrome occurring in a female. The developmental defects in this patient included posteriorly angulated auricles, bifid tip of tongue with a long frenulum, hypoplasia of the epiglottis and larynx, rocker bottom feet, and hypertrophied labia majora and clitoris. Additional anomalies not previously reported in the G syndrome were circumvallate placenta, and incompletely perforated hymen.

A 12-year-old girl with small stature and a hypertrophic clitoris was found to be mosaic for 45,X/46,X.dic(Y)(qtertop11:p11toqter)/46,XX/47,XX,dic(Y)(qtertop11:p11toqter). The dicentric chromosome was identified using Q-banding. These findings indicate mitotic instability of the dicentric Y, as well as the presence of an X chromosome in this patient.

A six-year-old female patient presenting with a swelling in the infraumbilical part of the abdomen, bulging out on straining, was diagnosed to have pseudoexstrophy bladder. The urinary tract was normal. The patient had bifid clitoris. There was no other associated malformation. Surgical repair of abdominal wall defect was done successfully. A new classification of exstrophy variants is proposed.

Female circumcision, more accurately known as female genital mutilation, is still a common practice in parts of Africa. This ritual genital operation can involve partial or complete excision of the clitoris and labia minora as well as infibulation (labial fusion). The case reported here involves a 16-year-old African girl with a complication of this mutilating procedure.

The clinical features of testicular feminization in the racoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) are reported. The condition is characterized by a normal male karyotype, but a mixed phenotype consisting of vulva, enlarged clitoris and scrotal testes. Partial spermatogenesis with a relative arrest at the first meiotic division was observed. The likely underlying genetic defect and mode of inheritance are discussed, together with implications for breeding programmes.

Prolonged exposure of ewes to oestrogenic pasture resulted in partial fusion of the labia of the vulva and hypertrophy of the clitoris. Partial fusion of the labia was also seen in ewes which had grazed oestrogenic pastures on normal commercial properties, and was related to the amount of histological change in the cervix. This lesion may be useful as a screening test for previous exposure to oestrogenic pasture.

A case of disrupted embryonic development of the genital tract in a newborn Holstein calf is described. The physical examination of the calf evidenced several abnormalities, like atresia ani, rudimentary external genitalia and caudal vertebral agenesis. The authors describe a family in which the mother and one son are affected by oesophageal leiomyomatosis and nephritis with haematuria. The mother also presents hypertrophy of vulva and clitoris, and her son has perceptive deafness and congenital cataract. In the medical literature only 15 cases of oesophageal leiomyomatosis in children and adolescents could be found. The association with Alport's syndrome was first described by Torres and Guarner in 1983.

A case of intersexuality in an arabo-haflinger horse is described. The external genitalia consisted of mammary gland, vulva and hypertrophic clitoris; the inner genitalia of rudimental testes. The sexual behaviour was typically male-like. The chromosome analysis showed the female karyotype 64,XX. The presence of testes in a genetically female animal is explained by translocation of an Y-chromosome fragment bearing the gene for the H-Y-antigen.

A case of malformation of the urogenital system with a persistent urogenital sinus and a cloaca is reported. There was unilateral agenesis of the kidney, megaureter and a double ureter with an ureteral orifice into the vagina and the clitoris. There was a double uterus and vagina with an orifice into the terminal gut. The patient had chronic recurrent urinary tract infections which required a colostomy during childhood. The operation largely restored a normal urogenital area and a functional anus.

A case of pseudohypoparathyroidism is described, finding in addition to the typical clinical data described in the literature an all almost total atrophy of the minor lips and clitoris, a perforated hymen and a "paradoxical" increase of convulsions with anticomicial treatment. Study of response of urinary phosphates and AMPc to PTH, was negative (Drezner type I). Osseous response to PTH was negative (Frame type I pseudohypoparathyroidism). Pathogenic possibilities are discussed.
