Urban heat exposure patterns and domain-specific executive function in adolescents.

Rising urban temperatures pose emerging risks to adolescent neurodevelopment, yet the impact of specific heat exposure patterns on executive function (EF) remains poorly understood. This large-scale study investigated the associations between residential daytime land surface temperature (LSTD) and objective EF performance among 3752 urban adolescents in China. We utilized high-resolution MODIS MOD11A2 satellite data to deconstruct LSTD into monthly minimum, mean, and maximum values, capturing baseline, routine, and extreme heat. Core EFs were assessed using computerized tasks. Generalized line

Beyond word count: a pilot study of the verbal fluency task in chronic mild traumatic brain injury.

BACKGROUND: To examine the clustering and switching behaviours, beyond total word count, as indicators of subtle executive dysfunction in individuals with and without a history of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), and to determine whether subcomponent analyses reveal cognitive inefficiencies overlooked by standard assessments. METHODS: Thirty-five university students (mTBI = 9; controls = 26) aged 18-24 years completed phonemic (FAS) and semantic (animal naming) verbal fluency tasks. Total correct responses, mean cluster size and number of switches were analysed. RESULTS: Compared with con

A biopsychosocial perspective on endometriosis: the importance of psychological inflexibility.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment strategies for endometriosis have traditionally been biomedical. There is a need for a more multidimensional understanding of endometriosis and more targeted and individualized treatment interventions, including psychological approaches. METHODS: The aims of this study were twofold: (1) to identify key biopsychosocial characteristics in individuals attending a tertiary clinic for endometriosis and (2) to inform the development of future, targeted, and efficacious interventions by examining the importance of psychological processes central to two scientific models, pain

Acute vagus nerve stimulation enhances reversal learning in rats.

Cognitive flexibility is a prefrontal cortex-dependent neurocognitive process that enables behavioral adaptation in response to changes in environmental contingencies. Electrical vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) enhances several forms of learning and neuroplasticity, but its effects on cognitive flexibility have not been evaluated. In the current study, a within-subjects design was used to assess the effects of VNS on performance in a novel visual discrimination reversal learning task conducted in touchscreen operant chambers. The task design enabled simultaneous assessment of acute VNS both on r

Characteristics of autism spectrum disorders are associated with longer duration of anorexia nervosa: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is associated with neuropsychological characteristics such as impairments in central coherence, cognitive flexibility, and emotion recognition. The same features also manifest in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and have been suggested to be associated with illness prolongation in AN. The purpose of this meta-analysis was to examine whether pronounced neuropsychological characteristics related to ASD are associated with illness duration in AN. METHOD: Four databases (Medline, PsycINFO, Scopus, PubMed) were searched for eligible studies. Search terms were (a) "a

Neuropsychological functioning and coping styles in adolescents in residential care with experiences of physical neglect.

OBJECTIVE: Physical neglect constitutes an experience of deprivation characterised by the absence of care, supervision, and stimulation, which may affect cognitive development during adolescence and hinder the learning of strategies to cope with demands. This study aimed to analyse coping styles and cognitive performance in adolescents in residential care with physical neglect as the predominant form of maltreatment, as well as to examine the association between both dimensions. METHODS: This observational, cross-sectional study included 45 adolescents in residential care, aged between 12 and

Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder increases cognitive inflexibility in people with coronary artery disease.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease (CAD) have a high prevalence of psychiatric comorbidities, that may impact clinically relevant outcomes (e.g., cognitive impairment and executive dysfunction). Obsessive-compulsive personality disorder (OCPD) is a common psychiatric comorbidity in CAD. It has a distinct cognitive profile characterised by inflexible thinking and executive dysfunction, which in turn may affect treatment adherence. However, the impact of OCPD on cognitive functioning in CAD is under-researched. We aimed to investigate the impact of OCPD on execut

Relationships between emotion regulation strategies and executive functions in adolescence: Exploring the effects of discrete emotions and age.

INTRODUCTION: Emotion regulation (ER) develops during adolescence and contributes to psychosocial adjustment. Individual differences in the development of ER strategies may be related to cognitive processes responsible for managing goal-directed behaviors, namely executive functions (EFs). This study examined (1) examined how difficulties in specific EFs (i.e., inhibition, flexibility and working memory) predict the use of ER strategies (i.e., reappraisal, distraction, expressive suppression, rumination, support-seeking) in an emotion-specific approach and (2) investigated these links across t

Executive Functions in Children and Adolescents with Turner Syndrome: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Turner syndrome (TS) is a genetic disorder, affecting 1/2500 to 1/3000 live female births, induced by partial or total deletion of one X chromosome. The neurocognitive profile of girls with TS is characterized by a normal Verbal IQ and weaknesses in visual-spatial, mathematics, and social cognitive domains. Executive functions (EFs) impairments have also been reported in these young patients. However, methodological differences across studies do not allow determination of which EFs are impaired and what is the magnitude of these impairments. The aim of this review was to clarify the EF profile

Linking adolescent alcohol use to adult behavioral flexibility: Habitual action-selection and attentional bias.

BACKGROUND: Habitual behavior and attentional bias are distinct cognitive processes that contribute to inflexible behavior. While animal studies provide strong evidence for an association between adolescent alcohol use and impairments in behavioral flexibility in adulthood, such a link in human research has not yet been explored. Moreover, since reduced flexible behavior serves as a risk factor for escalating alcohol intake, continued alcohol use in adulthood may further exacerbate any deficits associated with adolescent drinking. METHODS: We used principal component analysis to create compos

The Cognitive Drivers of Compulsive Eating Behavior.

Compulsivity is a central feature of obsessive-compulsive and addictive disorders, which share considerable overlap with excessive eating in terms of repetitive behavior despite negative consequences. Excessive eating behavior is characteristic of several eating-related conditions, including eating disorders [bulimia nervosa (BN), binge eating disorder (BED)], obesity, and food addiction (FA). Compulsivity is proposed to be driven by four distinct cognitive components, namely, contingency-related cognitive flexibility, task/attentional set-shifting, attentional bias/disengagement and habit lea

Cognitive training for improving executive function in chemotherapy-treated breast cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND: A majority of breast cancer (BC) survivors, particularly those treated with chemotherapy, experience long-term cognitive deficits that significantly reduce quality of life. Among the cognitive domains most commonly affected include executive functions (EF), such as working memory, cognitive flexibility, multitasking, planning, and attention. Previous studies in other populations have shown that cognitive training, a behavioral method for treating cognitive deficits, can result in significant improvements in a number of cognitive skills, including EF. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this

Anxiety, depression, quality of life and the mediating role of psychological flexibility: A study on Spanish cancer patients.

Anxiety, depression and psychological flexibility appear to be correlated with quality of life in cancer patients. However, the mediating role of psychological flexibility between emotional distress and quality of life are unclear. The aim of the study was to investigate the mediating role of psychological flexibility in the relationships between anxiety, depression, and quality of life in cancer patients undergoing treatment. A hundred and nineteen cancer patients participated in the study by completing the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, the Action and Acceptance Questionnaire II, and

Elevated plasma p-tau231 is associated with reduced generalization and medial temporal lobe dynamic network flexibility among healthy older African Americans.

BACKGROUND: Phosphorylated tau (p-tau) and amyloid beta (Aβ) in human plasma may provide an affordable and minimally invasive method to evaluate Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathophysiology. The medial temporal lobe (MTL) is susceptible to changes in structural integrity that are indicative of the disease progression. Among healthy adults, higher dynamic network flexibility within the MTL was shown to mediate better generalization of prior learning, a measure which has been demonstrated to predict cognitive decline and neural changes in preclinical AD longitudinally. Recent developments in cogniti

White matter integrity between left basal ganglia and left prefrontal cortex is compromised in gambling disorder.

Pathological gambling (PG) is a behavioral addiction characterized by an inability to stop gambling despite the negative consequences, which may be mediated by cognitive flexibility deficits. Indeed, impaired cognitive flexibility has previously been linked to PG and also to reduced integrity of white matter connections between the basal ganglia and the prefrontal cortex. It remains unclear, however, how white matter integrity problems relate to cognitive inflexibility seen in PG. We used a cognitive switch paradigm during functional magnetic resonance imaging in pathological gamblers (PGs; n
