Nicotine effects on brain function and functional connectivity in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Nicotine in tobacco smoke can improve functioning in multiple cognitive domains. High rates of smoking among schizophrenic patients may reflect an effort to remediate cognitive dysfunction. Our primary aim was to determine whether nicotine improves cognitive function by facilitating activation of brain regions mediating task performance or by facilitating functional connectivity. METHODS: Thirteen smokers with schizophrenia and 13 smokers with no mental illness were withdrawn from tobacco and underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanning twice, once after placeme

Prognosis of ischemic stroke in childhood: a long-term follow-up study.

Little is known about long-term physical sequelae, cognitive functioning, and quality of life in children who have experienced ischemic stroke. Thirty-seven patients under 16 years of age were studied; the median interval after stroke was 7 years. CT-scans were reassessed to determine the type of infarction at baseline. Occurrences of death, of new cardiovascular events, and of seizures during follow-up were recorded. Surviving patients were invited for a follow-up examination, including physical check-up, global screening of cognition, and an inventory of subjective health perception. Only tw

Communicating and enhancing teachers' attitudes and understanding of influenza using refutational text.

Influenza is an important public health issue and schools play an important part in preventing influenza outbreaks. However, little is known about teachers' knowledge and attitudes toward influenza and vaccination. The purposes of this project were to assess preservice and early career teachers' knowledge and attitudes of influenza, evaluate the effectiveness of a refutational text on increasing teachers' attitudes towards and knowledge of influenza and vaccination, and evaluate the effects of participant epistemology, motivation, and cognitive engagement on influenza attitudes and knowledge.

Managing inadequate antidepressant response in depressive illness.

INTRODUCTION OR BACKGROUND: Depression frequently fails to respond to initial treatment. SOURCES OF DATA: Predominantly meta-analyses and RCTs but supplemented where necessary by additional data and the authors' clinical experience. AREAS OF AGREEMENT: A systematic assessment to identify remedial causes of poor response should be followed by planned sequential treatment trials. Joint decision making by the patient and clinician is essential. Strategies with the strongest support are antidepressant augmentation with lithium or second generation antipsychotics and adding cognitive behavioural

Evaluation of acetylcholinesterase and carbonic anhydrase inhibition profiles of 1,2,3,4,6-pentasubstituted-4-hydroxy-cyclohexanes.

Carbonic anhydrase (CA; EC 4.2.1.1) is used for remedial purposes for several years, as there is significant focus on expanding more new activators (CAAs) and high affinity inhibitors. Alzheimer's disease and other similar ailments such as dementia and vascular dementia with Lewy bodies reduce cholinergic activity in the important areas involved in cognition and memory. Prevalent drugs for the symptomatic therapy of dementia are significant in increasing the associated cholinergic deficiency by inhibiting acetylcholinesterase (AChE). These six-membered carbocycles showed nice inhibitory action

Treating ethnic minority adults with anxiety disorders: current status and future recommendations.

The past three decades have witnessed an increase in the number of empirical investigations examining the phenomenology of anxiety and related conditions. There has also been an increase in efforts to understand differences that may exist between ethnic groups in the expression of the anxiety disorders. In addition, there is now substantial evidence that a variety of treatment approaches (most notably behavioral and cognitive behavioral) are efficacious in remediating anxiety. However, there continues to be comparatively few treatment outcome studies investigating the efficacy of anxiety treat

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy: Mechanisms, Diagnosis, and Treatments update.

Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) is defined as a syndrome of cerebral dysfunction secondary to sepsis but in the absence of direct central nervous system infection, structural abnormality, or other types of encephalopathy. The majority of clinical studies indicated that the severity and duration of SAE were highly related to the days of ICU stays, medical costs, and mortality of sepsis. Meanwhile, the persistence of cognitive impairments and psychological diseases in a majority of survived septic patients brings a heavy burden on those individuals and society. However, the pathogenesis o

Cell Therapy Products in Alzheimer Disease.

We are rapidly becoming an aging society, with the ongoing increase in challenges of the elderly. The age-related cognitive decline in accordance with aging society is of major importance in public health. Recent studies have proved the impacts of sex-steroid hormone on the brain; compliant with aging, menopause and decrease in estrogen have an effect on the occurrence and prevention of Alzheimer's disease. A new hypothesis states that Alzheimer's disease is a postmenopausal dementia, and is a negative form of estrogen deficiency. In this review article, we reckoned the cause of postmenopausal

Network dynamics in dyslexia: Review and implications for remediation.

Extant neurobiological theories of dyslexia appear fractional in focusing on isolated brain regions, mechanisms, and functional pathways. A synthesis of current research shows support for an Interactive Specialization (IS) model of dyslexia involving the dysfunctional orchestration of a widely-distributed, attentionally-controlled, hierarchical, and interhemispheric circuit of intercommunicating neuronal networks. This circuitry is comprised principally of the frontostriatal-parietal cognitive control system of networks, the posterior corpus callosum, and the left arcuate fasciculus. During de

Behavioural and emotional characteristics in children with Sotos syndrome and learning disabilities.

In contrast to physical characteristics, the developmental and behavioural characteristics of children with Sotos syndrome are not well documented. Data from a survey of 27 children (17 males and 10 females; mean age 10 years 7 months; range 6 to 15 years) with mild and moderate learning disabilities were obtained concerning school placement, social networks, adaptive competence, and behavioural problems and compared with a control group matched for cognitive level and age. Ten children attended a mainstream school (with remedial assistance), eight were placed in a school for children with lea

Behaviour, attention and cognition in severe dyslexia.

Information about coexisting problems in dyslexia may be vital for diagnostic and remedial procedures. There are few studies in this area, and to our knowledge none for the students in focus in this study. They all have phonological deficits and severely impaired reading abilities, in spite of prolonged educational remediation. The aim was to assess if these students have more behavioural/emotional problems than normal reading students. A clinical sample of 70 students, 59 males and 11 females, were compared to a normal reading control group. The groups were pair-wise matched on age, gender, c

Hearing and visual impairments.

Hearing impairments, with their resultant difficulties in communication function, represent a common chronic condition affecting one third of aged individuals. Loss of hearing ability pervades multiple domains of function in aged individuals, decreasing activity, increasing depressive symptoms, and confounding assessment of cognitive ability. Although they are not curable, hearing impairments are often remediable with appropriate audiologic evaluation and the prescription of amplification devices. The role of the geriatrician in managing hearing impairment is to recognize its presence, provide
