Results of surgical treatment of colic in miniature breed horses: 11 cases.

OBJECTIVE: To report on the outcome of surgical treatment of acute abdominal crises in miniature breed horses. DESIGN: Retrospective case series of miniature horses presented to the University Veterinary Centre, Camden with an acute abdominal crisis. METHODS: Hospital records of all miniature horses that underwent ventral midline laparotomy for acute abdominal crisis between 1997 and 2001 were reviewed. The signalment, history, clinical signs, results of ancillary diagnostic procedures, location and type of intestinal lesion, treatment and outcome were retrieved from each case record. Long-t

Prevalence and prognostic importance of hypomagnesemia and hypocalcemia in horses that have colic surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of hypomagnesemia and hypocalcemia in horses with surgical colic. ANIMALS: 35 horses with surgically managed colic. PROCEDURE: Serum concentrations of total magnesium (tMg2+) and calcium (tCa2+), as well as ionized magnesium (iMg2+) and calcium (iCa2+) were analyzed before surgery and 1, 3, 5, and 7 days following surgery. A lead-II ECG and pertinent clinical data were also obtained at each time. RESULTS: Preoperative serum tMg2+ and iMg2+ concentrations were below the reference range in 6 (17%) and 19 (54%) horses, respectively. Serum concentrations o…

Vesico-colic fistulae in the Grampian region: presentation, assessment, management and outcome.

Over a 12-year period, 67 patients presented with a vesico-colic fistula. The mean age was 69 years (range 19-96 years), with symptoms predominantly referred to the urinary tract. Cystoscopy and barium enema confirmed the presence of a fistula in 60 and 44% of patients respectively. A computerized tomography (CT) scan, used in only seven patients, revealed the fistula in each case. The underlying pathology included diverticular disease (62%), carcinoma (27%) and inflammatory bowel disease (6%). Fifty-one patients proceeded to surgery, of whom 32 (63%) had a sigmoid/recto sigmoid resection with…

Cecal-colic adult intussusception as a cause of intestinal obstruction in Central Africa.

During a 5-year experience in Central Africa, the most common cause of 78 adult intestinal obstructions was primary adult cecal-colic intussusception (n = 43; 55%). The symptom complex of colicky abdominal pain and obstipation was present in 100% of the patients with intussusception. Operative repair in 90% of patients consisted of simple reduction of the intussusceptum. There were no known recurrences. The etiology of adult cecal-colic intussusception is unknown. Patients typically present with a 3- to 4-day history of abdominal pain, obstipation, and usually a palpable mass. Treatment is sur…

[Implication of melatonin in the control of the interdigestive ileocecal-colic electromyographic profile in rats].

In the interdigestive period, intestinal motility displays myoelectrical complexes occurring cyclically at a constant rhythm. Since it is established that the pineal gland plays an important role in the control of circadian rhythms via its melatonin secretion, we decided to study the effects of pinealectomy and melatonin on the organization of the ileo-ceco-colic electromyogram of the rat. Pinealectomy resulted in the disappearance of ileal myoelectrical complexes and, concurrently, an excitomotor effect on the cecocolic tract. In pinealectomized rats a single intravenous injection of melatoni…

[Clinical study of colic vessels with respect to their significance in the replacement of the esophagus by the colon].

In 162 cases of esophageal replacement by colon we observed the configuration, distribution and pulsation of the middle, left, right and marginal colic arteries. Observation showed that the middle colic artery had only one major stem in 120 cases, 2-4 branches in 37 cases, and was absent in 5 cases. The middle colic artery originated from the superior mesenteric artery in 126 cases, had one stem originating from the superior mesenteric artery and another from the right colic artery in 10 cases. The middle and the right colic arteries forming one stem and originating from the superior mesenteri…

Comparison of age, sex, breed, history and management in 229 horses with colic.

A study, at a university in south eastern USA, aimed to determine whether age, sex, breed, management and history differed in colic cases. A detailed history was obtained for 229 horses between January 1987 and June 1988. Causes for colic determined by clinical examination, exploratory laparotomy and/or necropsy included: gastric rupture (GR, 6); ileal impaction (II, 17); small intestinal strangulating obstruction (SIO, 22); proximal enteritis (PE, 16); transient small intestinal distension (TSID, 18); large colon displacement (LCD, 52); large colon impaction (LCI, 34); colitis (8); small colo…

Results of operative treatment of equine colic with special reference to surgery of the ileum.

This retrospective study presents the results of surgical treatment of obstructive colic in horses operated in the last decade (1976-1985). The overall short-term recovery rate (i.e. discharged from hospital) was 51% of cases presented for surgery, and 68% of cases which were considered to be amenable to surgical therapy. For long-term results (6 months-8 years follow up) these percentages must be reduced by about 15% due to mortality after discharge. Special attention has been given to surgery of the ileum, which is often involved in strangulation or obturation, and accounts for about 26% of …

The value of arterial blood pressure measurement in assessing the prognosis in equine colic.

Indirect arterial blood pressure was determined on 33 horses prior to surgical intervention for the diagnosis and/or correction of acute abdominal disorders and a relationship between low systolic blood pressure and non-survival was established. It is suggested that blood pressure determination should be used to augment other methods of clinical and laboratory examination in cases of equine colic.

Risk factors for equine strangulating lipoma colic: An international, case-control study.

BACKGROUND: Obstruction by strangulating lipoma (SLO) is one of the most common causes of small intestinal strangulation in horses and is fatal without surgery. Current knowledge of risk factors for SLO is limited to horse signalment features. To date, other risk factors have not been investigated. OBJECTIVES: To investigate horse- and management-level risk factors for SLO using a population of healthy horses as controls. STUDY DESIGN: Matched, case-control study. METHODS: A prospective, international multicentre study was conducted in the UK and USA between January 2022 and May 2024. Cases

Interpreting abdominal fluid in colic horses: Understanding and applying peritoneal fluid evidence.

BACKGROUND: Interpreting changes in peritoneal fluid helps clinicians manage colic and other diseases in horses. During abdominal problems in the horse, abdominal fluid characteristics such as color, turbidity, total nucleated and red blood cell counts, cytology, total protein, and l-lactate change in predictable ways, helping the clinician characterize the disease. DESCRIPTION: Normal abdominal fluid in horses is odorless, clear to light yellow in color, and transparent. Peritoneal fluid becomes more turbid with increasing levels of protein, number of WBCs or RBCs, or with gross contaminatio…

Pseudotumoral Actinomycosis Mimicking Malignant Colic Disease: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Abdominal actinomycosis is a rare, chronic, and often unrecognized suppurative disease. It is caused by an anaerobic gram-positive bacterium, most commonly Actinomyces israeli. Colonic actinomycosis is rarely reported and may be responsible for a pseudotumoral syndrome leading, in the suspicion of malignancy, to a large and mutilating excisional surgery. It is usually the histopathological examination of the surgical specimens that accurately corrects the diagnosis. Here, we report a rare case of a colic actinomycotic involvement taking a pseudotumoral form. The diagnosis was made based on the…

Gallbladder Mucus Plug Mimicking Ascaris Worm: An Ambiguous Cause of Biliary Colic.

Biliary colic is a visceral pain caused by attempts of the gallbladder or bile duct to overcome the obstruction in the cystic duct or ampulla of Vater. Obstruction can be due to different etiologies such as stone, mass, worm, and rarely by mucus plug. We report the case of a 31-year-old gentleman who presented with recurrent biliary colic and weight loss. Work-up showed linear calcifications in the gallbladder extending to the common bile duct suggesting hepatobiliary ascariasis. Further investigations including stool analysis, upper endoscopy, endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS), and endoscopic …
