Because of the wide variations in the clinical presentation of celiac disease and because treatment exists that is effective in most cases, screening of the general population for celiac disease has been considered. There is still no evidence that patients who have symptom-free celiac disease are at increased risk of small intestinal lymphoma or other complications. Prevention of osteoporosis seems to be the strongest indicator for widespread screening today [22]. The major cause of failure to respond to a gluten-free diet is continuing ingestion of gluten, but other underlying diseases must b

BACKGROUND: Crohn's disease accompanied by nonspecific or idiopathic ulcerative proctocolitis corresponds to a condition called intestinal inflammatory disease. The immunoexpression of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) in Crohn's disease becomes more marked with progression of the disease and the presence of wild-type p53 suppresses the transcription of COX-2.
AIMS: To investigate the immunoexpression of cyclooxygenase 1 (COX-1), COX-2 and p53 in Crohn's ileocolitis and to correlated this expression with clinical and histopathological parameters.
METHODS: Forty-five cases of Crohn's disease, 16 cases

BACKGROUND: the rare occurrence of collagenous gastritis (CG) makes its epidemiology difficult to investigate. We designed a study to determine the demographic and clinical characteristics as well as the associations of CG with other upper gastrointestinal diseases in a large national clinicopathological database.
METHODS: from the IDEA database we extracted all patients with histopathologically documented CG and, in a case-control study, we compared 168 subjects with and 1,286,165 subjects without CG using odds ratios (OR) with their 95% confidence intervals (CI).
RESULTS: the prevalence of

INTRODUCTION: This study sought to determine whether dietary arginine influences colonic anastomotic healing in the rat model.
METHODS: Three groups of 42 Sprague-Dawley rats were fed 0, 1, and 3 percent arginine diets for three preoperative and three postoperative days. Animals underwent transection of the transverse colon with hand-sewn anastomosis. Subgroups of 14 animals in each dietary group were killed on postoperative Days 6, 10, or 14, and bursting pressures, histologic inflammation, and collagen content were compared.
RESULTS: Mean anastomotic bursting pressures on postoperative Day

The progression of Crohn disease to intestinal stricture formation is poorly controlled, and the pathogenesis is unclear, although increased smooth muscle mass is present. A previously described rat model of trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid-induced colitis is re-examined here. Although inflammation of the mid-descending colon typically resolved, a subset showed characteristic stricturing by day 16, with an inflammatory infiltrate in the neuromuscular layers including eosinophils, CD3-positive T cells, and CD68-positive macrophages. Closer study identified CD163-positive, CD206-positive, and argina

Crohn's disease (CD) is a chronic, relapsing inflammatory bowel disease, characterized by transmural inflammation. In CD, the recurrent inflammatory injury and tissue repair that occurs in the intestine can progress uncontrollably, leading to the proliferation of mesenchymal cells as well as fibrosis, characterized by excessive extracellular matrix deposition. These processes thicken the bowel wall, reducing flexibility, and often culminate in obstructive strictures. Because no effective measures are currently available to specifically treat or prevent intestinal stricturing, we sought to gain

Dietary fibre-based interventions are of growing interest for the prevention and treatment of digestive diseases. In this study, we investigated the effect of resistant starch (RS) on intestinal fibrosis, a stricturing condition driven by excessive extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation. RS was found to alleviate intestinal fibrosis in a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced chronic colitis mouse model, as evidenced by restored colon length, reduced ECM deposition (fibronectin and collagen I), and decreased levels of α-smooth muscle actin. Given that RS is fermented by the gut microbiota in th

Gut microbiota imbalance and alterations in the chemokine-chemokine receptor interactions are pivotal in the initiation and advancement of ulcerative colitis (UC). The current UC treatments are prolonged, exhibit high recurrence rates, and may lead to colorectal cancer. So, this study explores the efficacy of Helix pomatia (H. pomatia) mucin in preventing DSS-induced UC. This research focuses on investigating the underlying mechanisms, such as oxidative stress, inflammation, and alterations in gut microbiota and chemokine-chemokine receptor interactions, to understand the anti-inflammatory and

"Eosinophilic cholecystitis" has been an elusive concept. Around 1050 consecutive cholecystectomies with chronic (CC, n = 895), subacute (SAC, n = 100), and acute cholecystitis (AC, n = 55) were reviewed for eosinophilic infiltration. Eosinophilic hot spots (>40 eosinophils/HPF) were seen in 63% of SAC and 35% of AC (vs. 6% of CC, p < 0.001). Eosinophils were mostly encountered in areas of wall thickening, revealing edema with early collagenization and young tissue-culture-type fibroblasts. However, in ten chronic cholecystitis patients (<1%), prominent eosinophilia with eosinophil-rich foci (

Extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling is a hallmark of the pathology of gastrointestinal disorders. Collagen type VI (COL6) is produced by fibroblasts, and the COL6 α3-chain has shown to be elevated in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC), Crohn's disease (CD) and colorectal cancer (CRC). Measuring COL6α3 in serum may therefore have potential as a biomarker for gastrointestinal disorders. The aims of this study were to develop and validate a competitive ELISA targeting a specific neo-epitope of COL6α3 and evaluate its associations with the gastrointestinal disorders UC, CD and CRC, in compari

Cysteine catabolism presents cells with a double-edged sword. On the one hand, cysteine degradation provides cells with essential molecules such as taurine and sulfide. The formation of sulfide in cells is thought to regulate important and diverse physiological processes including blood circulation, synaptic activity and inflammation. On the other hand, the catabolism of cysteine by gut microbiota can release high levels of sulfide that may underlie the development or relapse of ulcerative colitis, an inflammatory bowel disease affecting millions of people worldwide. Here, we have used the nem

Intestinal epithelial cell damage is frequently seen in the mucosal lesions of infectious or inflammatory bowel diseases such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease. Complete remission of these diseases requires both the disappearance of inflammation and the repair of damaged epithelium. Saccharomyces boulardii (Sb, Biocodex) is a non-pathogenic yeast widely used as a preventive and therapeutic probiotic for the prevention and treatment of diarrhea and other gastrointestinal disorders. We recently showed that it enhances the repair of intestinal epithelium through activation of α2β1 integrin

OBJECTIVE: The objective is the investigation of Joint Hypermobility (JH) and the Hypermobility Syndrome (HMS) in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
METHODS: We examined 83 patients with IBD and 67 healthy individuals for the presence of JH. Patients were excluded if they were under 18 or over 50 years of age and if they had other conditions which affect joint mobility. The x(2) and the Fisher exact test were used appropriately between study groups. Odds ratios (ORs) for the risk of JH and HMS in IBD groups were calculated.
RESULTS: A total of 150 individuals (83 IBD patients an

We aimed to investigate the frequency of rheumatic diseases in patients suffering from autoimmune thyroid diseases (ATD). Sixty-five patients (56 F, 9 M), who were followed by diagnosis of ATD, were questioned and examined for the presence of rheumatic disease. Basic laboratory tests and antithyroid antibodies, antinuclear antibody and rheumatoid factor (RF) levels were also measured by appropriate methods. Various rheumatic diseases were detected in 40 (62%) of patients with ATD. The most frequent rheumatic conditions were fibromyalgia, recurrent aphthous stomatitis, osteoarthritis, keratocon

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of cyanidin-3,5-O-glucoside (C35G) on intestinal inflammation, mucosal barrier integrity, and fibrogenesis in a dextran sodium sulfate (DSS, 2.5%)-induced mouse model of ulcerative colitis (UC), as well as to elucidate the mechanisms underlying its effects. After a 28-day C35G intervention, UC mice showed significant improvements in clinical symptoms, including weight loss and an increased disease activity index (DAI). Additionally, there was an elevation in serum levels of inflammatory factors such as IL-1β, IL-6, IL-17 A, IL-18, and
