Incidence of deep vein thrombosis after colorectal surgery in a Chinese population.

ABSTRACT: Cricopharyngeal muscle myotomy (CPM) is a common intervention for relief of dysphagia in patients with Oculo-pharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD). Because of difficulties in approaching and dissecting cricopharyngeal muscle in these patients, we used transillumination for the myotomy (TA-CPM). Transillumination is a simple technique to improve the guidance and navigation of the surgeon in determining the location and depth of myotomy. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of transillumination in CPM in OPMD patients. An observational cohort of patients with

A multicenter trial of the use of the proteolytic enzyme inhibitor aprotinin in colorectal surgery.

Animal studies have demonstrated the value of the proteolytic enzyme inhibitor, aprotinin, in reducing collagen breakdown and improving the healing of experimental colonic anastomoses. A double-blind, multicenter, prospective trial has evaluated the use of aprotinin in the prevention of anastomotic leakage in patients. Two hundred sixteen patients undergoing colonic resection and anastomosis were studied. Patients were randomized to receive either aprotinin or placebo intravenously, peroperatively, and for the first three postoperative days. Anastomotic integrity was assessed clinically and by

[Evaluation of rapid colon preparation by oral intake of dulcolax for colorectal surgery].

The optimal result of colorectal surgery is best achieved by adequate preoperative colon preparation, which should be simple, safe, rapid, and thoroughly clean with little or no discomfort at all for patients. Conventional mechanical preparation, though effective, is time-consuming and unpleasant for patients, therefore new methods have been frequently presented in recent literature to meet the above ideal. A prospective and randomized study was conducted to evaluate preoperative colon preparation in elective, nonobstructive colorectal surgery. Group I included 32 patients who received three-d…

Predictors of increased acute postoperative pain after elective minimally invasive colorectal surgery.

PURPOSE: Postoperative acute pain is a major obstacle to archiving key goals in modern perioperative treatment concepts such as ERAS® (enhanced recovery after surgery). Despite a multimodal pain management concept, some patients continue to suffer from severe pain. The aim of this analysis is to identify predictors of severe postoperative pain following elective minimally invasive intestinal surgery. METHODS: Data from 49 patients, who underwent intestinal resection between April 2021 and March 2022 were used for this purpose. Various pre- and intraoperative characteristics were examined for

Secondary Cytoreductive Surgery ± Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy for Recurrent Colorectal Cancer Peritoneal Metastases.

BACKGROUND: Most patients who have colorectal cancer peritoneal metastases (CRC-PM) treated with cytoreductive surgery ± hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (CRS±HIPEC) experience recurrence within 1 year. This study assessed the safety and oncologic value of secondary CRS±HIPEC for patients with CRC-PM. METHODS: A multi-institutional database of patients treated for CRC-PM (2000-2024) was reviewed. Patients who underwent curative-intent initial CRS±HIPEC alone were compared with those who underwent secondary CRS±HIPEC for recurrent disease. Patients who received more than two procedure

Cefdinir-Ornidazole for Bowel Preparation Before Colorectal Surgery: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

INTRODUCTION: Mechanical bowel preparation (MBP) combined with oral antibiotics (OAB) before colorectal surgery was significantly associated with reduced surgical site infection (SSI) rates. However, aminoglycoside oral preparations are not available in Chinese medical institutions; it is necessary to find an alternative. This study aimed to investigate whether MBP combined with oral cefdinir and ornidazole was associated with lower SSI rates. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included patients who underwent elective colorectal surgery between June 2019 and May 2021. Patients were stra…

Significance of Naples prognostic score for postoperative complications after colorectal cancer surgery.

PURPOSE: The Naples prognostic score (NPS) is a sensitive scoring system that reflects both inflammatory and nutritional status. This study examined the significance of NPS in predicting postoperative complications following colorectal cancer surgery. METHODS: The present study included data from 443 patients who underwent curative resection for colorectal cancer. The patients were classified into low NPS (score 0-2) and high NPS (score 3-4) groups. We retrospectively investigated the relationship between NPS and postoperative complications (Clavien-Dindo classification ≥ II). RESULTS: Among

[Two Cases of Port-Site Recurrence after Laparoscopic Surgery for Colorectal Cancer].

Port-site recurrence is a rare manner of recurrence specific to laparoscopic surgery. Herein, we report 2 cases of port-site recurrence after laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgeries for colorectal cancer at our institution. Case 1: A 57-year-old woman underwent laparoscopic ileocecal resection for cancer of the ascending colon. Thirty-seven months after the surgery, the patient presented to our hospital with a mass in the right lower abdomen. It was observed in the abdominal wall, corresponding to a port-insertion scar on the right lower abdomen. As no metastases to other organs were detecte

Postoperative C-Reactive Protein Predicts Postoperative Delirium in Colorectal Cancer Following Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative delirium (POD) is a common complication in operative patients. Neuroinflammation has been reported to be a potential mechanism associated with the development of POD. Identifying available inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) would aid clinicians in early detection of POD. Previous studies have demonstrated that CRP may be a promising predictive marker for POD. Thus, this study aimed to explore the association between CRP and POD among those elderly colorectal cancer (CRC) patients. METHODS: 643 patients with CRC were included in this study. CRP leve

Ureteral Injury During Colorectal Surgery: Two Case Reports and a Literature Review.

Iatrogenic ureteral injury (IUI) is a dreaded complication of abdominopelvic surgery. Although rare, it is associated with severe consequences. This complication most commonly occurs during gynecological procedures but may also occur during colorectal surgeries. We present two cases of IUI in patients in whom the ureteric stents were electively placed. The first case was a 71-year-old male with no significant medical history. The patient underwent an elective laparoscopic sigmoidectomy for complicated diverticulitis. During the procedure, a proximal IUI occurred, and was recognized and repaire
