Preparedness activities and research needs in addressing emerging infectious animal and zoonotic diseases.

Emerging infectious animal and zoonotic diseases can inflict significant losses on animal production and public health, and threaten the safety and security of the food system. Threat analysis (forecasting), which monitors the measurable risk indicators of disease emergence, should be in place before the emergence of any threat. Animal and public health authorities develop and regularly re-evaluate disease preparedness, response and recovery plans, based on the 'One Health' principle. These plans should include surveillance, biosecurity measures, communication channels and training for personn

Social and environmental risk factors in the emergence of infectious diseases.

Fifty years ago, the age-old scourge of infectious disease was receding in the developed world in response to improved public health measures, while the advent of antibiotics, better vaccines, insecticides and improved surveillance held the promise of eradicating residual problems. By the late twentieth century, however, an increase in the emergence and re-emergence of infectious diseases was evident in many parts of the world. This upturn looms as the fourth major transition in human-microbe relationships since the advent of agriculture around 10,000 years ago. About 30 new diseases have been

Politics of disease control in Africa and the critical role of global health diplomacy: A systematic review.

Background: Africa is facing the triple burden of communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases (NCDs), and nutritional disorders. Multilateral institutions, bilateral arrangements, and philanthropies have historically privileged economic development over health concerns. That focus has resulted in weak health systems and inadequate preparedness when there are outbreaks of diseases. This review aims to understand the politics of disease control in Africa and global health diplomacy's (GHD's) critical role. Methods: A literature review was done in Medline/PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Emba

Notifiable diseases after implementation of COVID-19 public health prevention measures in Central Queensland, Australia.

ABSTRACT: The implementation of public health measures to control the current COVID-19 pandemic (such as wider lockdowns, overseas travel restrictions and physical distancing) is likely to have affected the spread of other notifiable diseases. This is a descriptive report of communicable disease surveillance in Central Queensland (CQ) for six months (1 April to 30 September 2020) after the introduction of physical distancing and wider lockdown measures in Queensland. The counts of notifiable communicable diseases in CQ in the six months were observed and compared with the average for the same

Fighting tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS in Northeast Europe: sustainable collaboration or political rhetoric?

BACKGROUND: In April 2000, the Council of the Baltic Sea States established the Task Force on Communicable Disease Control in the Baltic Sea region (the Task Force). A successor structure, the Northern Dimension Partnership in Public Health and Social Wellbeing, was established in autumn 2003. This article, a follow-up study to a series of evaluations of the Task Force evaluation, examines whether the Northern Dimension has succeeded in developing the achievements of the Task Force and ensuring the sustainability of regional health collaboration. METHODS: The study is qualitative, relying on …

The spectrum of health conditions in community-based cross-sectional surveys in Southeast Asia 2010-21: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Southeast Asia is undergoing an epidemiological transition with non-communicable illnesses becoming increasingly important, yet infectious diseases (tuberculosis, HIV, hepatitis B, malaria) remain widely prevalent in some populations, while emerging and zoonotic diseases threaten. There are also limited population-level estimates of many important heath conditions. This restricts evidence-based decision-making for disease control and prevention priorities. Cross-sectional surveys can be efficient epidemiological tools to measure the prevalence of a wide range of diseases, but no sy

Local food policies can help promote local foods and improve health: a case study from the Federated States of Micronesia.

The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) and other countries throughout the Pacific are facing an epidemic of non-communicable disease health problems. These are directly related to the increased consumption of unhealthy imported processed foods, the neglect of traditional food systems, and lifestyle changes, including decreased physical activity. The FSM faces the double burden of malnutrition with both non-communicable diseases and micronutrient deficiencies, including vitamin A deficiency and anemia. To help increase the use of traditional island foods and improve health, the Island Food Co

Impact of social behavioural change for reducing risk of climate-sensitive infectious diseases in the emergency context of Cabo Delgado, Mozambique: a pre-post intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Mozambique's minimal contribution to global gas emissions contrasts sharply with the significant impact climate change has on the region, particularly in terms of frequent droughts, cyclones, and floods. These climate-related disasters exacerbate vulnerabilities related to food security, human health, and economic growth. This study evaluates the impact of a Social Behavior Change (SBC)-based intervention on preparedness against water-borne diseases (WBDs) and vector-borne diseases (VBDs) among communities in Cabo Delgado, Mozambique. METHODS: This prospective, before-after, commu

The effects of socioecological factors on variation of communicable diseases: A multiple-disease study at the national scale of Vietnam.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of socioecological factors on multiple communicable diseases across Vietnam. METHODS: We used the Moran's I tests to evaluate spatial clusters of diseases and applied multilevel negative binomial regression models using the Bayesian framework to analyse the association between socioecological factors and the diseases queried by oral, airborne, vector-borne, and animal transmission diseases. RESULTS AND SIGNIFICANCE: The study found that oral-transmission diseases were spatially distributed across the country; whereas, the airborne-transmission diseases were

The objective of this review was to provide guidelines regarding the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of the most common infectious diseases in children during natural disasters, including floods such as those that occurred in the summer of 2017 in Peru. This instrument should be used by physicians and health personnel working in primary health care. The management of diarrheal, respiratory, skin, and eye diseases, vector-transmitted diseases such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika, and zoonoses such as leptospirosis is discussed. Emphasis is placed on the essential aspects of health educati

Role of a sentinel surveillance system in the context of global surveillance of infectious diseases.

In some nation states, sustained integrated global epidemiological surveillance has been weakened as a result of political unrest, disinterest, and a poorly developed infrastructure due to rapidly increasing global inequality. The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome has shown vividly the importance of sensitive worldwide surveillance. The Agency for Cooperation in International Health, a Japanese non-governmental organisation, has developed on a voluntary basis a sentinel surveillance system for selected target infectious diseases, covering South America, Africa, and Asia. The syste

Railways, disease and health in South Africa.

The role of South African Railways and Harbours in spreading disease and health care is examined. Attention is focused on the Railways' campaigns against malaria, plague and infectious diseases. A case study of the 1918 'Spanish Influenza' epidemic illustrates how the Railways diffuse disease and health care, and also demonstrates the disruption of services caused by the influenza.

Botulism--diagnosis, management and public health considerations.

Botulism is an uncommon but often fatal disease associated with ingestion of a potent neurotoxin present in improperly preserved foods. Exposures to commercially preserved foods with an odd or peculiar taste almost never represent exposure to botulism toxin. Improperly prepared home-canned products which are tasted or consumed without heating are more likely to be associated with botulism. The management of suspect and confirmed cases of botulism is presented by medical epidemiologists in the State Department of Public Health, Bureau of Communicable Disease Control, to provide physicians in Ca…

[Prophylaxis of Community-Acquired Pneumonia Outbreaks with Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine. Prospects Analysis for Russian Military Community].

Pneumococcal pneumonia and other diseases caused by pneumococci still remain the main factors of high morbidity and mortality rates throughout the world. Pneumococci as the leading pathogens of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), acute otitis media and sinusitis also cause a number of other serious systemic disorders including invasive infections with high mortality in spite of the antimicrobial resistance status and adequate antimicrobials choice. Pneumococcal infections are responsible for 5-35% or more of community-acquired pneumonias. The burden of pneumonia (up to 100-200 per thousand) is

[The disease and treatment of the frontline soldiers in Han dynasty].

This paper purports to identify and analyze the medical information of the frontline soldiers in the Northwest borderland provinces of Han Dynasty, especially Juyan and Dunhuang region, through an heuristic reading of the Juyan Bamboo Slips and the Dunhuang Bamboo Slips of the Han Dynasty. My findings are as follows. The most frequent disease found in the bamboo slips was the external injury. The injury of the frontline soldiers mainly occurred from the quarrels among armed soldiers using weapons. The bamboo slips also demonstrate that the quarrels usually arose due to the fierce tension cause

Intervention strategies for emerging respiratory virus infections: policy and public health considerations.

Respiratory viruses have emerged and re-emerged in humans for hundreds of years. In the recent past avian and animal influenza viruses have caused human disease ranging from conjunctivitis to respiratory illnesses, including the 2009-10 A(H1N1)pdm09 pandemic. Coronaviruses, human metapneumovirus (hMPV) and enteroviruses have also impacted humans globally. Since the likely public health impacts are common, plans and policies for intervention strategies can be developed, encompassing early detection through surveillance and diagnostics, as well as treatment and prevention through clinical and no

Zoonotic disease awareness in animal shelter workers and volunteers and the effect of training.

Animal shelter workers are a vulnerable population whose exposure to zoonotic disease may be greater compared with the general population. The aim of this project was to identify baseline zoonotic disease knowledge of animal shelter workers and to develop and evaluate zoonotic disease awareness training. Ten animal shelters in six western states were randomly selected. One hundred and eleven trainees were evaluated by identical pre- and post-training tests. Training topics included identification of clinical signs, susceptible species, and transmission of disease to animals and to humans. Zoon

Just after the First World War, when Poland received independence, activity of sanitary-epidemiological service was included as the most important in the country. In this time epidemiological situation of infectious diseases was unsuccessful, especially concerning typhus exantematicus, typhoid fever, dysentery, diphtheria, tuberculosis. National Central Epidemiological Institute and since 1923 National Institute of Hygiene together with filias in some voivodships up to 1954 were appointed as sanitary epidemiological service especially to control the infectious diseases.
