Community-acquired Pneumonia in Children.

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is a common respiratory infection in children, with viral etiologies predominating. Bacterial pathogens such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae also contribute significantly. Diagnosis relies primarily on clinical findings, with imaging reserved for severe cases. Treatment depends on the etiology, with amoxicillin as the first-line antibiotic for bacterial CAP and macrolides for atypical pneumonia. Supportive care, including oxygen therapy, is crucial for severe cases. Vaccination has drastically reduced CAP-related mortality, but new epide

Community-Acquired Pneumonia in Children.

Community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) is the most common cause of childhood mortality globally. In the United States, CAP is a leading cause of pediatric hospitalization and antibiotic use and is associated with substantial morbidity. There has been a dramatic shift in microbiological etiologies for CAP in children over time as pneumococcal pneumonia has become less common and viral etiologies have become predominant. There is no commonly agreed on approach to the diagnosis of CAP in children. When indicated, antimicrobial treatment should consist of narrow-spectrum antibiotics. In this article,

Community-based neuropalliative care.

Community-based palliative care is defined as palliative care delivered outside of the hospital and outpatient clinics. These settings include the home, nursing homes, day programs, volunteer organizations, and support groups. There is strong evidence outside of the neuropalliative context that community-based palliative care can reduce hospital costs and admissions at the end of life. Research that focuses on specialized community-based palliative care for neurologic disease have similar findings, although with significant variability across conditions and geographic locations. Several of the

Scabies: an update for community nurses.

Community nurses may encounter scabies in homeless people, those living in prisons, people living at home or in people living in care homes. Scabies is more prevalent in older adults and there is evidence that this infection is becoming more prevalent and difficult to treat. The community nurse can help reduce such risks. This article aims to enable the community nurse to be aware of the clinical features of scabies and how it is treated.

Intracellular communication and immunothrombosis in sepsis.

Inflammation and coagulation are the critical responses to infection that include leukocytes, platelets, and vascular endothelial cells responding in concert to eradicate the invading pathogen. In sepsis, a variety of cell surface receptors, including toll-like receptors, Fcγ-receptors, G-protein-coupled receptors, and adhesion receptors, detect the pathogens and elicit thromboinflammatory responses. Concurrently, the molecular patterns released from host damaged cells accelerate the immune responses through binding to the same pattern recognition receptors. Cytokines, chemokines, and extracel

Time to codify a challenge in communication.

Infophobia, a term not being introduced in the medical literature, is one of many factors that may hamper a Patient-Health Care Provider (HCP) encounter. This phobia creates resistance to accepting medical knowledge, potentially becoming a significant barrier in medical practice, explained by patients' fear of information that may negatively impact medical assessments, therapies, and immunization. Since complications of this phobia are well beyond information, it should be recognized, and herein by presenting a dermatological case, we aim to establish this concept to identify this phenomenon.

Communicating chronic hydrocephalus: A review.

Formerly called normal pressure hydrocephalus, communicating chronic hydrocephalus (CCH) is a condition affecting 0.1 to 0.5% of patients over 60years of age. The pathophysiology of this disease is poorly understood, but a defect in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) resorption appears to be commonly defined as the cause of the neurological disorders. The last important discovery is the description of the glymphatic system and its implication in CCH and CSF resorption. Comorbidities (Alzheimer's disease, microangiopathy, parkinsonism) are very frequent, and involve a diagnostic challenge. The clinical

Global Community Child Health.

This special issue of IJERPH has published a range of studies in this developing field of Global Community Child Health research. A number of manuscripts submitted in response to our invitation describing 'community-based interventions which impact on child health and wellbeing around the globe. In addition to rural community-based initiatives given that most children now live in cities we are also interested to hear about urban initiatives….' We hope this issue will of great interest to the researchers and practitioners as well as academia from the fields of Global Health as well as Global Ch

The misuse of colour in science communication.

The accurate representation of data is essential in science communication. However, colour maps that visually distort data through uneven colour gradients or are unreadable to those with colour-vision deficiency remain prevalent in science. These include, but are not limited to, rainbow-like and red-green colour maps. Here, we present a simple guide for the scientific use of colour. We show how scientifically derived colour maps report true data variations, reduce complexity, and are accessible for people with colour-vision deficiencies. We highlight ways for the scientific community to identi

Epidemic retinitis and community outbreaks.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to correlate seasonal variation of epidemic retinitis (ER) with concurrent community outbreaks. METHODS: This is a retrospective, observational, comparative study conducted in a tertiary care eye hospital in south India. Monthly variation in number of ER cases in comparison with reported community outbreaks by Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP) from 2009 to 2020 in the same region were studied. Month-wise graphs against number of patients were plotted for ER and for each community outbreak. RESULTS: ER was diagnosed in 163 patients. Diagno

Implementing a community recovery programme.

How should recovery be understood in the aftermath of a major incident? Bringing together the appropriate resources can be a challenge in its own right. How should one understand the complex needs of the affected community? What do those working in recovery need to implement to ensure a fully integrated recovery operation? When trying to formulate a recovery plan, what lessons have been learned from previous incidents? This paper suggests some points for consideration and implementation.
