A call for globally responsive screening materials to account for heterogeneity in dementia syndromes.

Effective screening for communicative ability in dementia is vital to drive theoretical understanding and optimize care responsiveness globally. Communication is central to the human experience; however, routine clinical screening for progressive communication change remains limited due to a variety of resource constraints. Other challenges include the subtlety of early communication-led symptoms, heterogeneous underlying pathologies, and a lack of culturally diverse research and tools. To address the scarcity of dedicated assessment resources, future initiatives must maximize responsiveness t

The second rheumatic heart disease forum report.

The second rheumatic heart disease (RHD) forum was held on February 18, 2013, at the Sixth World Congress of Pediatric Cardiology and Cardiac Surgery in Cape Town, South Africa, to focus attention on key areas in global RHD control, management, and prevention. Building on the foundation of the first RHD forum, over 150 interested participants met to discuss critical issues on the RHD landscape. Unique to this meeting was a mixture of diverse backgrounds and disciplines, all crucially important to the conversation around RHD control and prevention. Some clear priorities have emerged for RHD act

A community conversation process to establish resident and service provider perspectives on needs related to use and treatment of opioids and substances.

INTRODUCTION: Rates of fatal overdose due to opioid and substance use in Richmond, Virginia increased from 44.6 in 2018 to 129.5 per 100,000 city residents in 2023. The underlying contexts surrounding the increase in substance use and overdoses in Richmond, Virginia remains poorly understood. METHODS: Using community based participatory research principles (CBPR), a series of "community conversations" with neighborhood residents were conducted between May-December 2023. These events included educational information, resource connection, and facilitated qualitative focus group discussion on fa

Meanings of community in a community health center.

As health care organizations make communities the targets for their interventions, connections between "community" as theory for practice and community as setting for practice require examination. This study s purpose was to explore meanings given to community in a newly formed community health center, with particular emphasis on the relationship among women, community, and health. Using interpretive and emancipatory methodologies, interviews were conducted with clinic administrators and staff, and women who used the clinic. Data analysis revealed discrepancies in meanings of community. Clinic

Methods for Influencing Social Policy: The Role of Social Experiments.

Research methods in community psychology have grown more diverse since the Swampscott conference, but rigorous social experiments maintain a place among the multiplicity of methods that can promote community psychology values. They are particularly influential in policy circles. Two examples of social experiments to end homelessness for different populations illustrate their role. Both studies show that offering extremely poor and disenfranchised people autonomy and the resources they seek works better than "helping" them to overcome deficits in ways designed by well-meaning service providers.

Traumatic loss and major disasters: strengthening family and community resilience.

This article presents the core principles and value of a family and community resilience-oriented approach to recovery from traumatic loss when catastrophic events occur. In contrast to individually based, symptom-focused approaches to trauma recovery, this multisystemic practice approach contextualizes the distress in the traumatic experience and taps strengths and resources in relational networks to foster healing and posttraumatic growth. The intertwining of trauma and traumatic losses is discussed. Key family and social processes in risk and resilience in traumatic loss situations are outl

An evidence-based approach to urinary catheter changes.

Many people in the community have a urinary catheter that is routinely changed by a community nurse. People with urinary catheters can experience a number of problems including catheter blockages. A blocked catheter causes great distress and inconvenience to the person and places a strain on the resources of community nursing organizations because of the need for unscheduled visits to change the catheter. A procedure that enabled catheter changes to be planned before they blocked would reduce patient distress and better assist community nursing organizations with resource management. The plann

Accessing Faith-Based Organizations Using Public Transportation: A Qualitative and GIS Study.

Nondriving aging adults are at risk of experiencing mobility barriers that inhibit access to important community resources for managing health and wellbeing. This multimethod study explores bus transportation experiences of older adults who live in extended stay hotels and use faith-based organizations to access resources. Interviews from 17 nondriving older adults were analyzed for perspectives about using faith-based organizations and residents' experiences navigating to faith-based organizations through available bus transportation in their communities. Residents described both favorable an

Formative Evaluation of a Pharmacist-Led Area Agency on Aging Community Care Transition Initiative: A Qualitative Interview Study From Staff Perspectives.

OBJECTIVES: The Michigan Region VII Area Agency on Aging (AAA) conducted a community care transition initiative (CCTI) for rural, low-income older adults to reduce hospital readmission rates. The AAA CCTI included a community health worker (CHW) home visit, pharmacist telehealth comprehensive medication review, and follow-up after discharge. Our study aimed to conduct a formative evaluation of the AAA CCTI to identify areas for program refinement. Identified strategies for program refinement add to the development, implementation, and evaluation of rural care transition program literature. ME

Cognitive performance in older adults at three months following mild traumatic brain injury.

Introduction: In the context of limited research assessing outcomes following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in older adults, this study evaluated cognitive outcomes through prospective memory, and expected that performance of an older mTBI group (≥65 years) would be lower compared to orthopedic and community controls. The study also explored whether cognitive resources (retrospective memory, executive function) moderated any association between presenting Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and prospective memory.Method: At three-months post-injury, a mTBI group (n = 39), an orthopedic control group

Effects of traffic noise on tree frog stress levels, immunity, and color signaling.

During the last decade, many studies have focused on the detrimental effects of noise pollution on acoustic communication. Surprisingly, although it is known that noise exposure strongly influences health in humans, studies on wildlife remain scarce. In order to gain insight into the consequences of traffic noise exposure, we experimentally manipulated traffic noise exposure as well as the endocrine status of animals to investigate physiological and phenotypic consequences of noise pollution in an anuran species. We showed that noise exposure increased stress hormone level and induced an immun

Building community networks and engagement for effective TB case management.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global public health challenge, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Effective TB case management requires comprehensive strategies that extend beyond clinical treatment and involve community engagement and networks. This narrative review explores the role of community networks and engagement in enhancing TB case management, focusing on how communities contribute to improved detection, treatment adherence, and long-term management. Drawing on a wide range of studies, the review highlights the importance of participatory approaches, the use o

Use of services by community-dwelling patients with dementia: a systematic review.

Dementia is a complicated disease requiring medical, psychological, and social services. Services to address these needs include medical care (outpatient physician/specialist, inpatient, emergency) and community care (home health, day care, meal preparation, transportation, counseling, support groups, respite care, physical therapy). This systematic review of articles published in English from 1991 to the present examines studies of ambulatory, community-dwelling dementia patients with established dementia diagnoses. Searches of the Medline database using 13 combinations of search terms, plus

Hospital Nursing Staff Perceptions of Resources Provided by Their Organizations During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has profoundly impacted the health and psychological well-being of hospital nursing staff. While additional support is needed to better cope with increased job stressors, little is known about what types of hospital resources have been provided and how nursing staff perceive them. This study addressed this gap by describing nursing staff perceptions of resources provided by hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. METHODS: Registered nurses and nursing assistants who were working in hospitals during the pandemic

Factors influencing motivation and job satisfaction among supervisors of community health workers in marginalized communities in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: Management and supervision of community health workers are factors that are critical to the success of community health worker programmes. Yet few studies have explored the perspectives of supervisors in these programmes. This study explored factors influencing motivations of supervisors in community health worker programmes. METHODS: We conducted qualitative interviews with 26 programme staff providing supervision to community health workers in eight community-based organizations in marginalized communities in the greater Durban area of South Africa from July 2010 to September 20

"When" matters: Differences in fatal opioid-related overdose events in Massachusetts by time of day, 2019-2023.

BACKGROUND: Geospatial analyses of opioid involved overdose deaths can inform community harm reduction efforts. Differences in overdose deaths by time of day are important, as overdose events may be more likely to go unrecognized at night when fewer community resources are available. METHODS: Using Massachusetts Registry of Vital Records and Statistics data (2019-2023), we utilized regression analyses to evaluate demographics, residence, and toxicology differences associated with the recorded time of opioid involved overdose deaths, stratified by day (6AM-5:59PM) and night (6PM-5:59AM). Addressing Veterans' Mental Health in Community-Based Care.

United States Veterans are at an elevated risk for suicide despite the expansion of public outreach initiatives. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care centers may not be accessible to a large proportion of Veterans, but on the other hand, community-based physicians often do not feel they have tools to meet these patients' unique needs. This issue may be addressed via collaboration between VA and community-based providers to develop military cultural competence alongside increased education on the breadth of resources available to Veteran patients.
