We investigated to find whether the immune adherence hemagglutination (IAHA) test could be used for identification of group A coxsackieviruses (Cox. A). By using homogenate of suckling mouse torsos infected with each of nine prototype viruses (Cox. A new method for the preparation of Q-fever erythrocyte antigenic diagnosticum, adaptable to large-scale production, has been developed, and the diagnosticum thus obtained has been found to be highly specific and sensitive. The combined use of the complement fixation and passive hemagglutination tests enhances the effectiveness of the serological study, as it not only ensures a more complete detection of antibodies to C. burnetii, phase I, in humans and cattle, but also gives more precise indications on the time of infection.

By in vitro complement immunofluorescent staining methods, 46 serum samples from bullous pemphigoid patients with titers of antibasement-membrane-zone antibodies of 320 or greater were tested for their ability to fix C1q, C4, and C3. The recent outbreaks of human fascioliasis in Britain provided the opportunity for employing the double diffusion precipitin test in the diagnosis of this disease. IgM rheumatoid factors capable of complement fixation and activation are commonly present in the sera of adults with rheumatoid arthritis. Hidden complement fixing IgM rheumatoid factor has been demonstrated in the majority of patients with juvenile RA and hidden agglutinating IgM rheumatoid factors have been demonstrated in the serum of adults with seronegative rheumatoid arthritis. We studied 27 adults with seronegative rheumatoid arthritis and were unable to demonstrate hidden complement fixing IgM rheumatoid factor in their sera.
