Severe anal condylomata acuminata following high-dose chemotherapy and autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation: a case report.

We report the case of a 37 years old male patient who developed severe anal condylomata acuminata after high-dose chemotherapy and autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation for follicular non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Anal warts were particularly disabling, refractory to the treatment and finally imposed diversion colostomy. The role of cellular immunodeficiency observed after high-dose chemotherapy and autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation as etiology of anal condylomata is discussed.

Recurrent condylomata acuminata: how routine immediate and delayed hypersensitivity parameters might provide a clue to their immunopathogenesis.

In 30 male patients suffering from recurrent condylomata acuminata, immediate hypersensitivity parameters (total IgE, PTT and prick tests) and delayed hypersensitivity against seven recall antigens (multi test) were studied. Thirty healthy male volunteers, matched in age, were the controls. Significantly higher immediate hypersensitivity activity was shown in the patient group. Qualitative evaluation of delayed type hypersensitivity showed that controls had a positive test 16 times more often than patients. A rather homogeneous suppression of delayed type hypersensitivity was found in the pati

Detection of human papillomavirus L1 protein in condylomata acuminata from adults with defects in cell-mediated immunity.

Immunohistochemical assays for human papillomavirus (HPV) L1 protein, using antiserum directed against the L1 major capsid protein of bovine papillomavirus (anti-BPV serum), were performed on 101 condylomata acuminata biopsy samples from 47 men (40 of whom had intact cell mediated immunity [CMI], and 7 with conditions known to cause CMI defects), and 54 women (48 with normal CMI, and 6 with CMI defects). L1 protein was detected in 28% of all biopsies, including 20.5% of samples from patients with normal CMI and 76.9% of patients with CMI defects (P = .00002). For both males and females, L1 pro

Human papillomavirus in cervix carcinoma and condylomata acuminata--identification of HPV-DNA by improved dot-blot-hybridization.

Using the benzoylated naphthoylated DEAE cellulose method (BND-method) we have designed a more efficient approach for the detection of human papillomavirus-DNA (HPV-DNA) via dot-blot and hybridization. Biopsy material from anogenital warts (40 patients), invasive carcinoma uteri (12 patients) and normal controls (20 patients) were studied for the presence of HPV-DNA. Phenol extracted DNA from representative lesions was loaded onto a pretreated nitrocellulose filter, was incubated under stringent conditions with 32-P-dCTP labelled HPV-DNA and exposed to a Kodak X-OMAT film. DNA of HPV types 11,

Analysis of human genital warts (condylomata acuminata) and other genital tumors for human papillomavirus type 6 DNA.

32P-labelled cloned HPV 6 DNA was used as probe to analyze human genital tumors for DNA sequences homologous to HPV 6 DNA. Ninety three percent of all condylomata acuminata (41 out of 44) were found to harbor HPV 6 DNA. Of the remaining three, one contained HPV 1 DNA. No papillomavirus DNA was identified in the two other tumors. All three invasively growing giant condylomata acuminata (Buschke-Löwenstein tumors) investigated also contained HPV 6 DNA. Two out of six atypical condylomata of the cervix hybridized with HPV 6 DNA under stringent conditions, one only under conditions of low stringen

Modified photodynamic therapy to minimize pain in the treatment of condylomata acuminata: A prospective, randomized, self-controlled study.

BACKGROUND: Pain is a major concern associated with conventional photodynamic therapy (C-PDT). OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy, pain and safety of modified photodynamic therapy(M-PDT) for the treatment of condylomata acuminata. METHODS: A prospective, randomized, self-controlled study was conducted. Warts were randomized to the M-PDT or C-PDT side. 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA; 20 %) was incubated for 3 h before patients were exposed to LED red light (100 J/cm2) on the C-PDT side and for 30 min before being exposed to LED red light (300 J/cm2) on the M-PDT side. Validation and clinical use of the CECA, a disease-specific quality of life questionnaire for patients with anogenital condylomata acuminata.

The aim of this validation study was to assess the measurement properties of the CECA (Spanish acronym for the Specific Questionnaire for Condylomata Acuminata) in patients with anogenital condylomas. A total of 247 patients aged > 18 years completed the questionnaire on 2 occasions as well as the Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI). The CECA questionnaire showed good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha values of 0.86 and 0.91 in the emotional and sexual activity dimensions) and good testretest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient 0.76 emotional dimension, 0.82 sexual activity

Use of human papillomavirus type 11 virions in an ELISA to detect specific antibodies in humans with condylomata acuminata.

Human papillomavirus types 6 and 11 (HPV-6 and HPV-11) are the major aetiological agents of condylomata acuminata. Serological studies of this disease have been difficult to perform and interpret because native, type-specific antigens have not been available. In particular, since these viruses have not been propagated in vitro and sufficient quantities of virions are not present in lesions, virus particles have been difficult to obtain. In the present study, we used HPV-11 particles, obtained from human tumours produced in athymic mice, as antigen in an ELISA to compare antibody responses betw

Recurrent oral condylomata acuminata and hairy leukoplakia: an early sign of myelodysplastic syndrome in an HIV-seronegative patient.

Oral hairy leukoplakia (OHL) has been observed in all risk groups seropositive for HIV infection. Recently, this lesion has also been described in HIV-seronegative patients with immunosuppression of iatrogenic origin. We report on a HIV-1 and HIV-2 seronegative, heterosexual man affected by refractory anemia with ringed sideroblasts (myelodysplastic syndrome), who developed recurrent oral condylomata acuminata and OHL as an early clinical manifestation. The diagnosis of OHL was confirmed by identifying Epstein-Barr viral particles by electron microscopy and by in situ DNA hybridization. HIV in

Podophyllotoxin in serum: absorption subsequent to three-day repeated applications of a 0.5% ethanolic preparation on condylomata acuminata.

High-performance liquid chromatography was used for quantitative determination of podophyllotoxin in serum subsequent to repeated applications of a 0.5% ethanolic preparation on condylomata acuminata. The drug was not detectable in the serum of ten men treated with < or = 50 microliters. In serum of seven patients receiving 100-1,500 microliters on extraordinarily large en-plaque lesions, peak levels of 1-17 ng/ml were measured within 1-2 hr. The drug did not accumulate in serum. Dispersion of 100 microliters gave rise to peak levels of < or = 5.0 ng/ml and to subsequent levels of < or = 3.0 n

[Condylomata acuminata gigantea with detection of HPV-6-DNA. A case report with adjuvant systemic IFN-gamma therapy].

A case history of a 65-year-old man with giant condylomata (Buschke-Loewenstein tumour) of 30 years' duration is presented. The lesions were histologically confirmed, there were no signs of metastatic spread. HPV 6a DNA has been identified in Buschke-Loewenstein tumours and in different types of papilloma. After surgical removal in several sessions and treatment with gamma interferon by subcutaneous injection into the abdominal skin the patient has remained almost free of lesions.

5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy combined with wart curettage treatment for intractable urethral condylomata acuminata. A case report.

Condylomata acuminata (CA) is caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). It is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STD). The lesions mainly occur in the external genitalia and perianal areas, rarely involves in urethral and usually localized at the distal 3 cm of the urethral orifice. Because of the special anatomical site, treating urethral CA is challenging and it has high recurrence rate after treatment. 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) can successfully treat urethral CA, however, the experience of using ALA-PDT combined with wart curettage to treat intracta
