Risk Factors in Outpatients with Dermatitis and Eczema in Tertiary Hospitals of China Who Have Clinically Suspected Bacterial Infection.

Skin bacterial infections are often observed in eczema patients, but the risk factors are not fully understood. The current study evaluated the prevalence of clinically suspected bacterial infection and its associated risk factors. Moreover, we investigated the practice of skin infection diagnosis in China. A hospital-based, multicenter, cross-sectional epidemiologic survey of bacterial infection was performed in a total of 6208 outpatients diagnosed with dermatitis and eczema from 39 tertiary hospitals of 15 provinces and municipalities in China. All patients completed a specific questionnair

[Analysis of factors influencing neonatal bacterial flora of the conjunctiva shortly after delivery].

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was the analysis of conjunctival flora in newborns within the first 72 hours of life, depending on the methods of delivery and other perinatal factors. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group consisted of 192 mothers and 192 newborns. Culture samples were obtained before delivery from the cervicovaginal secretions of pregnant women and, in case of caesarean sections, additionally from the maternal surface of the fetal membranes. Conjunctival specimens were obtained twice from the inferior conjunctival fornix of the right eye in all the newborns: early sample--i

Prevalence, risk factors and genetic diversity of Chlamydia felis in cats.

INTRODUCTION: Chlamydia felis is the main chlamydial pathogen of cats and is associated with conjunctivitis and respiratory disease. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of Chlamydiaceae and Chlamydia felis, to explore risk factors and predictors (age, sex, breed, origin and ocular signs) for infection using logistic regression, and to appraise genetic diversity via ompA sequencing and phylogenetic analysis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Conjunctival swabs from 156 cats were examined using real-time PCR assays for Chlamydiaceae and C. felis. Logistic regression and Kaplan-Meier analysis evalua

A Rare and Surprising Case of Spontaneous Type B Carotid-Cavernous Fistula in an Internal Medicine Ward.

Carotid-cavernous fistulas are abnormal communications between the carotid arteries and the cavernous sinus. They can be spontaneous, which is rare, or acquired, most often post-traumatic. We describe the case of a 59-year-old woman with complaints of right-sided red eye and blurred vision that did not improve with antibiotic treatment for bacterial conjunctivitis, progressing to what appeared to be post-septal cellulitis. The patient had exuberant chemosis, diplopia, VI cranial nerve palsy, and elevated intraocular pressure in the right eye. Computed tomography of the orbits showed right-side

A method for quantifying pulmonary Legionella pneumophila infection in mouse lungs by flow cytometry.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary load of Legionella pneumophila in mice is normally determined by counting serial dilutions of bacterial colony forming units (CFU) on agar plates. This process is often tedious and time consuming. We describe a novel, rapid and versatile flow cytometric method that detects bacteria phagocytosed by neutrophils. FINDINGS: Mice were infected with L. pneumophila via intratracheal or intranasal administration. At various times after bacteria inoculation, mouse lungs were harvested and analysed concurrently for bacterial load by colony counting and flow cytometry analysis. The

Pathogenesis of meningitis: experimental studies on the molecular basis of Haemophilus influenzae infection.

The successful development and implementation of rational strategies for the prevention of bacterial meningitis should be facilitated by acquiring a more detailed knowledge of its pathophysiology. We have used a biologically relevant rat model of meningitis in conjunction with classical microbial genetics and recombinant DNA technology to investigate the molecular basis of Haemophilus influenzae pathogenicity. These studies aim to define how specific bacterial genes mediate the potential of H. influenzae to colonize the nasopharynx, disseminate within the blood stream and invade the central ne

Conjunctival biopsy in patients with Kawasaki disease.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute vasculitis of infants and young children that is associated with bilateral nonexudative conjunctivitis during the acute illness. Epidemiologic evidence has suggested an infectious cause but the etiology of KD remains unknown. We examined conjunctival biopsy specimens from seven patients with typical KD to characterize the pathologic changes during the acute disease. Light microscopic examination revealed nonspecific, mild inflammatory changes that included vascular dilatation, infiltration with scattered lymphocytes, increased numbers of plasma cells in the co

Bacterial pathogen genomics and vaccines.

Infectious diseases remain a major cause of deaths and disabilities in the world, the majority of which are caused by bacteria. Although immunisation is the most cost effective and efficient means to control microbial diseases, vaccines are not yet available to prevent many major bacterial infections. Examples include dysentery (shigellosis), gonorrhoea, trachoma, gastric ulcers and cancer (Helicobacter pylori). Improved vaccines are needed to combat some diseases for which current vaccines are inadequate. Tuberculosis, for example, remains rampant throughout most countries in the world and re

Clinical characteristics of external bacterial ocular and periocular infections and their antimicrobial treatment patterns among a Ghanaian ophthalmic population.

Empirical antimicrobial therapy is linked to a surge in antimicrobial resistant infections. However, an insight on the bacteria etiology of ocular infections is essential in the appropriation of choice of antimicrobial among clinicians, yet there remains a dearth of data from Ghana. We investigated the bacteria etiology of external ocular and periocular infections and antimicrobial treatment patterns among a Ghanaian ophthalmic population. A multicenter study design with purposive sampling approach was employed. Patients demographics and clinical data were collated using a pretested structure

[The state-of-the art and prospects for the pharmacological therapy of infectious and allergic eye diseases].

The inflammatory, infectious and allergic diseases of the eye still remain an acute problem in practical ophthalmology due to their high prevalence, relapsing clinical course, a growing frequency rate of mycotic and acanthoamebic keratitis and a growing number of resistant causative agents of bacterial keratitis. 55.3% of corneal pathologies are related with the herpes simplex virus, 37.3%--with secondary bacterial infection, 33.2%--with primary bacterial infection, 6.7%--with mycotic infection and 5.6%--with acathoamebic infection. Algorithms of pharmacological therapy are suggested for a maj

Eye of the Finch: characterization of the ocular microbiome of house finches in relation to mycoplasmal conjunctivitis.

Vertebrate ocular microbiomes are poorly characterized and virtually unexplored in wildlife species. Pathogen defense is considered a key function of microbiomes, but determining microbiome stability during disease is critical for understanding the role of resident microbial communities in infectious disease dynamics. Here, we characterize the ocular bacterial microbiome of house finches (Haemorhous mexicanus), prior to and during experimental infection with an inflammatory ocular disease, Mycoplasmal conjunctivitis, caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum. In ocular tissues of healthy house finche

[Etiology of corneal ulcers with special reference to bacterial genesis].

The authors report on 134 patients (141 eyes) seen between May 1982 and December 1985 with corneal ulcers with or without hypopyon. Eight patients (11 eyes) had a facial palsy, 7 (7 eyes) a varicella zoster infection, 1 (2 eyes) a marginal ulcer ("furrow keratitis") associated with collagenosis, 29 (29 eyes) an ulcerative keratitis with endophthalmitis, 1 (2 eyes) a pemphigoid-associated ulcer and 90 (92 eyes) a herpetic infection. Pathogenic bacterial strains were isolated from 20 patients: 10 coagulase-positive Staphylococcus aureus (4 coinfections), 3 Pseudomonas aeruginosa (1 coinfection),

First report of Neoscytalidium dimidiatum as the causal agent of leaf blight on Clivia miniata.

In this survey, the symptomatic leaves of Clivia miniata were collected from a greenhouse in Karaj city of Iran. The isolation and morphological investigation showed Scytalidium-like fungus associated with leaf blight symptom. The phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer along with partial sequences of rDNA large subunit and translation elongation factor 1-α (tef-1α) genomic regions confirmed the identification of the recovered isolate as Neoscytalidium dimidiatum. The pycnidial morph of the fungus didn't observe both in vitro and in vivo. The pathogenicity test on C. miniata a
