Low-income women and use of prescribed contraceptives in the context of full health insurance coverage in France, 2019.

OBJECTIVE: Major socioeconomic differences in contraceptive use are observed in high-income countries. Cost is often cited as a main factor to explain these differences but other barriers may also exist. Our aim was to compare prescribed contraceptive use among low-income and non-low-income women in a national context of full health insurance coverage. STUDY DESIGN: In the French national health insurance database, we selected all women (14.8 million) aged 15-49 years living in France in 2019. We compared the prevalence of use of each prescribed contraceptive between low-income and non-low-in

Contraceptive care for the adolescent.

Despite recent improvements in rates of teen pregnancy, abortion, birth, and contraceptive use, effective contraceptive counseling for adolescents should be a high priority for the primary care provider in the office setting. Adolescent psychosocial risk screening and appropriate counseling about sexual decision-making is necessary. Contraceptive services visits include, relevant history, limited physical examination, provision of information, anticipatory guidance about sexual behaviors, and the provision of contraceptive methods. Teens should always be encouraged to use a male condom during s

Contraception and sexuality in an area-specific group of Swedish women 15-34 years of age.

In a community-based study in a Swedish suburban/rural area, all women aged 15-34 years (n = 671) were invited to the local health centre to be examined for chlamydia infection and for an interview. The attenders were asked about contraceptive history, age at first intercourse, number of life-time sexual partners and socioeconomic background. The net attendance was 69%, and contraceptive information on an additional 20% could be gathered through medical records. The average age at first intercourse was around 16 years, and the average number of sexual partners in the age-groups 20-24, 25-30 an

Perspectives of healthcare providers around providing family planning services to women living with HIV attending six HIV treatment clinics in Lusaka, Zambia.

ABSTRACTWhile international guidelines recommend integration of family planning (FP) and HIV services, limited research has been done to explore how healthcare providers perceive the feasibility and utility of integrated services. To address this gap, we administered a standardized questionnaire to 85 providers from 6 HIV clinics in Lusaka, Zambia, before (April-May 2018) and after (May-June 2019) implementing an enhanced model of FP/HIV service integration. We tested for differences in FP knowledge, attitudes and practices between the two time periods with tests appropriate for paired observa

A clinical guideline for intrauterine device use in adolescents.

PURPOSE: To present an evidence-based review of the data for and against the use of the intrauterine device (IUD) in adolescent females and to provide guidelines for selection of appropriate candidates. DATA SOURCES: Clinical research, expert opinions, and systematic reviews of IUD use in adolescents. CONCLUSIONS: The use of the IUD in adolescents has been questioned in the past as a result of concerns surrounding increased risks for pelvic inflammatory disease and infertility in adolescents. Current research reveals no contraindications to IUD use based solely on age or parity and illuminat

Couples-based interventions and postpartum contraceptive uptake: A systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Systematically review the existing evidence about couples-based interventions and postpartum contraceptive uptake and generate recommendations for future research. DATA SOURCES: PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, Embase, and CINAHL through June 7, 2021. STUDY SELECTION AND DATA EXTRACTION: Studies with a couples-based intervention assessing postpartum contraceptive uptake. Two independent reviewers screened studies, extracted data, and assessed risk of bias with RoB-2 (Cochrane Risk of Bias 2) for randomized and ROBINS-I (Risk of Bias in Non-Randomized Studies - Interventions) for

Immediate versus delayed postpartum insertion of contraceptive implant and IUD for contraception.

BACKGROUND: Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC), including intrauterine devices (IUDs) and contraceptive implants, are highly effective, reversible methods of contraception. Providing LARC methods during the postpartum period is important to support contraceptive choice, and to prevent unintended pregnancy and short interpregnancy intervals. Delaying offering contraception to postpartum people until the first comprehensive postpartum visit, traditionally at around six weeks postpartum, may put some postpartum people at risk of unintended pregnancy, either due to loss to follow-up or be

General yeast infection in Bangladeshi women using contraceptives.

A study on the vaginitis due to candida infection among Bengali women using different contraceptives was carried out. A total of 368 patients using three different contraceptives (Pills, Injectables, IUD) and 316 age and parity matched women as control were studied. The incidence of vaginal yeast infection was highest (17.6%) among pill user. In control group, the incidence is lower (6.7%). The difference is statistically significant (P less than 0.05). No significant difference in vaginal yeast infection in women using other two types of contraceptives (Injection, IUD) in contrast to control

Long-acting reversible contraception.

Although short-acting reversible hormonal contraceptives, such as oral contraceptives and the contraceptive patch and vaginal ring, remain the most commonly used contraceptive methods in the United States, they are also associated with the highest failure rates. Long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) methods, such as intrauterine devices and contraceptive implants, offer high continuation rates and very low failure rates, and are safe for use in most women. The provision of LARC methods to adolescent, young adult and nulliparous women is a relatively new concept that offers an innovative

Acceptability of a Long-Acting, Multipurpose Vaginal Ring: Findings from a Phase I Trial in the U.S. and Dominican Republic.

Background: Women worldwide face risks from pregnancy, HIV, and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). To date, highly effective contraceptive methods provide no HIV/STI protection, and HIV prevention products, excluding condoms, provide no pregnancy protection. Intravaginal rings (IVRs) delivering antiretrovirals and contraceptives are a promising multipurpose prevention technology (MPT). Methods: Embedded within a Phase I randomized, placebo-controlled trial, we examined acceptability of continuous versus interrupted use of a 90-day MPT IVR among 47 low-risk women in Norfolk, Virginia

Risk of ectopic pregnancy following tubal sterilization.

To determine the impact of tubal sterilization on the overall incidence of ectopic pregnancy, the authors compared reported incidence rates of ectopic pregnancy after tubal sterilization with the rates associated with other contraceptive methods or no contraception. For each contraceptive method they then calculated the cumulative lifetime risk of ectopic pregnancy from the age at which a final contraceptive choice was made. Tubal sterilization was found to be associated with a lower cumulative lifetime risk of ectopic pregnancy than no contraception or use of an intrauterine contraceptive dev

[Efficacy and adverse effects of hormonal contraceptives: comparative study].

OBJECTIVE: to determine the efficacy and adverse effects of subdermic implants, oral and injectable contraceptives. METHODS: the study was conducted by using a cross-sectional design. The efficacy was measured by using the Pearl Index (PI) and the adverse effects were registered in each type of contraceptive: oral, injectable and subdermic implant. RESULTS: 264 users were included, the median age was 23.6 years and the mean weight was 54.48 kg. 23.1 % were oral contraceptives users; 15.7 % were using injectable contraceptives and 56.8 % were using subdermic implants. Ovarian reserve markers in women using various hormonal contraceptives.

Objectives: The aim of the study was to assess whether the ovarian reserve markers anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) and antral follicle count (AFC) were lower among women using the progestin-only pill (POP) or levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) and similar to the decrease observed in combined oral contraceptive (COC) pill users. Methods: This retrospective study comprised 565 hormonal contraceptive users (COC, POP, LNG-IUS or contraceptive vaginal ring) and 983 non-hormonal contraceptive users, who were seen in two Danish fertility assessment and counselling clinics between 2015
