A total of 1523 individuals of 34 species of chaetodontids from the Great Barrier Reef were examined for faustulid trematodes. Specimens resembling Paradiscogaster glebulae Bray, Cribb & Barker, 1994 were found in nine chaetodontid species at three localities. These specimens are shown, on the basis of combined morphological and molecular analyses, to comprise a complex of morphologically similar and partly cryptic species. The complex may comprise as many as six distinct species of which three are resolved here. The true P. glebulae is identified in Chaetodon ornatissimus Cuvier, 1831, Chaeto

Nutrient exchange between corals and their dinoflagellate symbionts is the foundation of the stable symbiosis that underpins coral reef ecosystem success. The cnidarian-dinoflagellate holobiont engages in both autotrophy (photosynthates supplied by the symbiont) and heterotrophy (feeding by the host on microscopic organisms and particulate matter) to meet their nutritional demands. While considerable research has been devoted to understanding nutrient dynamics in adult corals and other symbiotic cnidarians, less is known about how the combination of heterotrophy and autotrophy influences nutri

OBJECTIVE: To find out the reason of three ciguatera fish poisoning cases in Xiamen in 2005 and identify the fish species.
METHODS: The grouper implicated in food poisoning and seven other coral reef fishes collected from market were tested by mice bioassay and ciguatoxin-test kit. The mtDNA was extracted from toxic grouper meat, and Cty b gene segment was amplified and the PCR products were sequenced. The sequences were compared with those in the GenBank.
RESULTS: The result turned out to be positive by the ciguatoxin-test kit, while the toxicity of the toxic grouper implicated in food pois

The eukaryotic cell cycle is an evolutionarily conserved process that underpins cell division and growth in multicellular and unicellular organisms alike. The regulation of cell cycles of the partners in an endosymbiosis is complex, wherein coordinated growth is central to the maintenance of biomass homeostasis. Imbalanced growth can result in the starvation of one or both partners, the loss of immune tolerance, and the subsequent collapse of the symbiosis. The cnidarian-dinoflagellate symbiosis is an intracellular partnership where unicellular dinoflagellate symbionts reside within cnidarian

The rice coral, Montipora capitata, is widely distributed throughout the Indo-Pacific and comprises one of the most important reef-building species in the Hawaiian Islands. Here, we describe a de novo assembly of its genome based on a linked-read sequencing approach developed by 10x Genomics. The final draft assembly consisted of 27,870 scaffolds with a N50 size of 186 kb and contained a fairly complete set (81%) of metazoan benchmarking (BUSCO) genes. Based on haploid assembly size (615 Mb) and read k-mer profiles, we estimated the genome size to fall between 600 and 700 Mb, although the high

Coral diseases have been documented in many areas of the Caribbean, but studies in the eastern Caribbean region have been lacking. The prevalence, distribution patterns and contribution to the mortality of coral tissue by black band discase (BBD), white plague (WP) and dark spots disease (DSD) were examined at five reef sites along the west coast of Dominica. 185 of the 325 diseased colonies recorded between March and August 2000, in a survey area of 5884 m2, were WP. This disease contributed to 89% of the total 4.08 m2 of tissue mortality caused by diseases during the survey period. WP also a

Decommissioning consequences of offshore oil and gas infrastructure removal on marine population dynamics, including connectivity, are not well understood. We modelled the connectivity and metapopulation dynamics of three fish and two benthic invertebrate species inhabiting the natural rocky reefs and offshore oil and gas infrastructure located in the Bass Strait, south-east Australia. Using a network approach, we found that platforms are not major sources, destinations, or stepping-stones for most species, yet act as modest sources for connectivity of Corynactis australis (jewel anemone). The present study used liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to investigate retrospectively ciguatoxin (CTX)-positive samples as determined by mouse bioassay (MBA) in the past 10 years in Hong Kong. The results showed that Pacific CTXs (P-CTX-1, -2 and -3) were the most commonly observed toxins found in the samples, indicating Pacific Ocean areas as the most important origin of ciguatera fish poisoning. Clinical diagnosis from ciguatera patients also revealed the predominance of neurological illnesses in most cases, supporting intoxication of Pacific origin. This study demo

Reef ecosystems are among the most diverse marine systems, with benthic communities underpinning trophic structure and habitat complexity. However, long-term dynamics of benthic assemblages in oceanic reefs remain poorly resolved, particularly across isolated tropical systems under different protection regimes. Here, we assessed spatial and temporal variation in benthic community composition across four Brazilian oceanic islands: St. Peter and St. Paul Archipelago (SP), Rocas Atoll (RA), Fernando de Noronha Archipelago (FN), and Trindade Island (TR). Using annual photoquadrat surveys since 201

Interactions between bacteria and particulate organic matter, algae, coral reefs, fish, plant root systems, animals, and humans occur primarily through a dynamic interface of viscous mucus or mucilage. While mucus influences fundamental rates of bacterial infection, respiration, and carbon and nutrient cycling, our observations of this physical habitat of bacteria are limited by methods that damage the material and obfuscate spatial relationships. We present a technique using confocal microscopy of molecular rotors to reveal the 3D viscous structure of undisturbed mucus and associated bacteria…

As marine equipment advances from shallow to deep-sea environments, the demand for high-performance antifouling materials continues to increase. The lionfish, a species inhabiting both deep-sea and shallow coral reefs, prevents fouling organism adhesion via its smooth, mucus-covered skin, which contains antimicrobial peptides. Inspired by lionfish skin, this work integrates zwitterionic segments with hydration-based fouling-release properties and the furan oxime ester structure with intrinsic antibacterial activity to develop a silicone-based antifouling coating capable of operating from shall…

Sex determination in coral reef fish is highly plastic, with many species displaying socially controlled sequential hermaphroditism. In these species, social hierarchy cues trigger sex change, initiating transformations in neuroanatomy, physiology, morphology, and behavior. The process begins in the brain, where shifts in dominance status alter cortisol release and neuromodulator signaling, including dopamine and arginine vasotocin. Radial glia detect these changes and modulate local estradiol synthesis via brain aromatase production that in turn influences neurogenesis and gene expression in

Dozens of independent origins of multicellularity have profoundly shaped Earth's evolutionary and ecological history. These transitions have given rise to massive radiations encompassing thousands to millions of species and the evolution of increasingly complex bodies. Multicellular taxa now constitute the majority of Earth's biomass and have fundamentally transformed global ecosystems, underpinning diverse biomes from forests and grasslands to coral reefs. While these macroevolutionary patterns have long been recognized, the microevolutionary processes driving the transition to multicellulari…

Symbiodinium are a diverse group of unicellular dinoflagellates that are important nutritional symbionts of reef-building corals. Symbiodinium putative species ('types') are commonly identified with genetic markers, mostly nuclear and chloroplast encoded ribosomal DNA regions. Population genetic analyses using microsatellite loci have provided insights into Symbiodinium biogeography, connectivity and phenotypic plasticity, but are complicated by: (i) a lack of consensus criteria used to delineate inter- vs. intragenomic variation within species; and (ii) the high density of Symbiodinium in hos

Ciguatera fish poisoning (CFP) is an illness contracted through the ingestion of seafood containing ciguatoxins. It is prevalent in tropical regions worldwide, including in Australia. Ciguatoxins are produced by some species of Gambierdiscus. Therefore, screening of Gambierdiscus species identification through quantitative PCR (qPCR), along with the determination of species toxicity, can be useful in monitoring potential ciguatera risk in these regions. In Australia, CFP is prevalent in tropical Queensland and increasingly in sub-tropical regions of Australia, but has a report rate of approxim

Groupers play an important role in coral reef ecosystems as top predators, but much remains unknown about their diverse colorations. Hulong hybrid grouper (Epinephelus fuscoguttatus ♀×E. lanceolatus ♂) typically exhibits a black-brown patterned appearance but occasionally aberrant morphs, including pure white, pure yellow, and variegated forms which exceed the phenotypic range of either parent. What is the physiological basis of these transgressive colorations? Does each aberrant phenotype reflect an independent underlying state? Here, we combined long-term phenotypic observation with cytologi

Sunscreens are an important means of protection against sunburns, dyspigmentation, photoaging, and photocarcinogenesis. Sunscreens come in a variety of formulations that can protect against ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation, both UVB and ultraviolet A (UVA) radiation (broad-spectrum sunscreens), and UVB, UVA, and visible light (tinted broad-spectrum sunscreens). In the USA, there is currently a paucity of FDA-approved broad-spectrum filters on the market. Studies have identified the presence of multiple UV filters in water sources globally. Many laboratory studies have implicated the potential imp
