Corpus callosum atrophy and cerebral blood flow in chronic alcoholics.

The corpus callosum atrophy and cerebral blood flows were investigated in chronic alcoholics without Marchiafava-Bignami disease. Fifteen cases of chronic alcoholics and 15 age-matched healthy controls were studied. The sagittal plane of magnetic resonance imaging of the head was scanned into a computer and the corpus callosum was measured and the callosal index was calculated. Cerebral blood flows were measured using stable xenon computed tomography (CT) method. Regional cerebral blood flows in the frontal, temporal, parietal and occipital cortex, frontal, temporal and occipital white matter,…

X-linked lissencephaly with absent corpus callosum and ambiguous genitalia.

Lissencephaly has been described in over 10 distinct malformation syndromes. Recently, we have recognized 5 children from four unrelated families with an almost identical disorder comprising lissencephaly with a posterior-to-anterior gradient and only moderate increase in thickness of the cortex, absent corpus callosum, neonatal-onset epilepsy, hypothalamic dysfunction including deficient temperature regulation, and ambiguous genitalia in genotypic males. Our observation of 5 affected males in one of these families is consistent with an X-linked pattern of inheritance. However, it differs in m…

Corpus callosum morphology from magnetic resonance images in Tourette's syndrome.

We measured the midline cross-sectional area and other morphologic features of the corpus callosum (CC) from magnetic resonance (MR) images in 14 unmedicated patients with Tourette's syndrome (TS) and 14 normal control subjects matched for age, sex, handedness, and socioeconomic status. Each CC was manually circumscribed on midline images from a T1-weighted sagittal series, and the area of the entire CC and five anatomic subdivisions were measured. CC circumference, regional width, and mean callosal curvature were also measured. CC cross-sectional area correlated positively with brain size and…

Marchiafava-Bignami disease: serial changes in corpus callosum on MRI.

Serial MRI findings of changes in corpus callosum lesions in two cases of Marchiafava-Bignami disease are presented. In both, MRI displayed diffuse swelling of the corpus callosum in the acute stage, thought to represent oedema and demyelination. In the chronic stage, in addition to atrophy of the corpus callosum with presumed focal necrosis, previously undescribed focal hypointensity on T2-weighted images, of unknown cause, was observed in the corpus callosum.

[Behavioral asymmetry in BALB/cCF mice with corpus callosum abnormalities].

The possible homology between anomalies of the corpus callosum in mice and in humans remains questionable. The small number of existing behavioural studies in mice have not shown effects, at the behavioural level, of the absence or reduction in size of the corpus callosum. We therefore examined the development, during the first 3 weeks of postnatal life, of a number of simple reflex and integrative responses in the members of a sample of 101 BALB/cCF mice; at autopsy carried out at 50 days of age, 29 mice showed anomalies of the corpus callosum (total absence or an area less than 0.75 mm2). As…

[Congenital oculomotor apraxia with corpus callosum agenesis and subtentorial atrophy].

A 7 year-old child with congenital oculomotor apraxia (Cogan's syndrome) presented with mainly voluntary horizontal saccadic movements. Fixation of a visual target could be obtained only by a sudden movement of the head preceded by eyelid blinking. Electro-oculography confirmed the predominant disturbance of saccadic movements (delay in onset, hypometria). CT scan showed agenesis of the corpus callosum and atrophy of the vermis together with enlargement of the 4th ventricle and pre-pontine cisternae. The role of these anomalies in the pathogenesis of this rare congenital syndrome of good progn…

Butterfly Glioma of the Corpus Callosum Mimicking Rapidly Progressive Dementia.

A butterfly-pattern, high-grade glioma involving the corpus callosum is an uncommon but highly aggressive brain tumour that may present with neuropsychiatric manifestations and mimic rapidly progressive dementia, leading to diagnostic delay. Disruption of frontal-callosal connectivity may produce behavioural and cognitive abnormalities resembling behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), resulting in initial misdiagnosis. A 65-year-old postmenopausal woman presented with a two-week history of vomiting, progressive disorientation, generalized weakness, irrelevant speech, cognit…

Children with corpus callosum anomalies: clinical characteristics and developmental outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Corpus callosum abnormalities are complex, aetiologically diverse, and clinically heterogeneous conditions. Counselling parents regarding their causes and associated syndromes, and predicting the neurodevelopmental and seizure risk prognosis, is challenging. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We describe the clinical characteristics, associated anomalies, and neurodevelopmental outcomes of children with agenesis of corpus callosum (ACC). Fifty-one neonates with ACC/hypoplasia of the corpus callosum were identified over a 17-year period, and their medical records were retrospectively reviewed…

Neurodevelopmental outcome following prenatal diagnosis of a short corpus callosum.

OBJECTIVE: Data regarding the neurodevelopmental outcome of fetal short corpus callosum (CC) diagnosed according to standard reference charts is scarce. The purpose of this study was to assess whether the finding is related to neurodevelopmental delay, and to examine reclassification to normal fetal CC length using CC length/EFW ratio. METHOD: Historical prospective cohort study including pregnant women who were referred for fetal neurosonogram due to abnormal CC. Short CC was defined below the 5th percentile according to reference charts. Twenty cases were included in the study group and com…

Agraphia with reversible splenial corpus callosum lesion caused by hypoglycemia.

BACKGROUND: Neurological manifestations caused by hypoglycemia range from reversible focal deficits and transient encephalopathy to irreversible coma or death. Recently, high signal intensity lesions in the splenium of the corpus callosum on diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging were reported in adults experiencing hypoglycemia. However, patients presenting with agraphia are rare. SUBJECT AND METHODS: We examined a 17-year-old left-handed female patient with type 1 diabetes who exhibited transient left agraphia with a reversible splenium lesion of the corpus callosum on diffusion-weig…

Quantitative analysis of mouse corpus callosum from electron microscopy images.

This article provides morphometric analysis of 72 electron microscopy images from control (n=4) and hypomyelinated (n=2) mouse corpus callosum. Measures of axon diameter and g-ratio were tabulated across all brains from two regions of the corpus callosum and a non-linear relationship between axon diameter and g-ratio was observed. These data are related to the accompanying research article comparing multiple methods of measuring g-ratio entitled 'A revised model for estimating g-ratio from MRI' (West et al., NeuroImage, 2015).

Corpus callosum size and shape alterations in adolescent inhalant users.

Inhalants, frequently abused during adolescence, are neurotoxic to white matter. We investigated the impact of inhalant misuse on the morphology of the corpus callosum (CC), the largest white matter bundle in the brain, in an adolescent sample of inhalant users [n = 14; mean age = 17.3; standard deviation (SD) = 1.7], cannabis users (n = 11; mean age = 19.7; SD = 1.7) and community controls (n = 9; mean age = 19.5; SD = 2.6). We identified significant morphological differences in the CC among inhalant users compared with community controls. There were no morphological differences between inhal…

Selectively diminished corpus callosum fibers in congenital central hypoventilation syndrome.

Congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS), a condition associated with mutations in the PHOX2B gene, is characterized by loss of breathing drive during sleep, insensitivity to CO2 and O2, and multiple somatomotor, autonomic, neuropsychological, and ophthalmologic deficits, including impaired intrinsic and extrinsic eye muscle control. Brain structural studies show injury in peri-callosal regions and the corpus callosum (CC), which has the potential to affect functions disturbed in the syndrome; however, the extent of CC injury in CCHS is unclear. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)-based f…

Corpus callosum anomalies: birth prevalence and clinical spectrum in Hungary.

Data regarding the epidemiology of callosal anomalies are contradictory. We performed a population-based retrospective survey to study the birth prevalence and clinical features of agenesis/hypoplasia of the corpus callosum and accompanying central nervous system and somatic abnormalities in southeastern Hungary between July 1, 1992 and June 30, 2006. Among 185,486 live births, 38 patients (26 boys and 12 girls) manifested agenesis/hypoplasia of the corpus callosum, corresponding to a prevalence of 2.05 per 10,000 live births (95% confidence interval, 1.4-2.7). Callosal anomalies were isolated…
