CONTEXT: The occipital condyles of the skull articulate with the superior articular facets of the atlas vertebra and form an important junction between the cranium and the vertebral column. The morphological features of occipital condyles are relevant in biomechanical, anatomical and clinical studies.
OBJECTIVE: To describe the anatomical profile of unusual occipital condyles detected in a bone specimen.
CASE REPORT: The present osteological study provides a detailed morphological description of unusual occipital condyles showing uneven and serrated surfaces and also displaying longitudinal

BACKGROUND: We present a case of partial facial duplication in a male infant.
METHODS: The clinical, radiological, and laboratory findings for this patient are described, followed by a review of the literature.
RESULTS: Craniofacial duplication is a rare form of conjoined twinning and presents in a wide spectrum, from dicephalus to diprosopus to partial facial duplication. Many of these cases can be diagnosed prenatally. Prenatal assessment of our patient revealed only agenesis of the corpus callosum.
CONCLUSIONS: The pathogenesis is believed to involve duplication of the notochord. Where t

A tracheostomy was performed in a 4-month-old girl with Crouzon's syndrome because of upper respiratory obstruction. During the procedure the absence of tracheal rings was observed. These findings were confirmed by postoperative bronchoscopy. Subsequent surgical correction of the patient's craniofacial anomalies enabled decannulation when the patient was 10 months old. Complete cartilaginous trachea is very rare and is always associated with craniosynostotic syndromes. Tracheobronchial anomalies should be investigated in patients whose respiratory symptoms are not due to upper airway obstructi

In almost all congenital craniofacial deformity reconstructions there is a need to advance the supraorbital bar. This bar, which is fixed by several techniques, should be firm enough to minimize a relapse. In this paper a new modification during osteotomy of the supraorbital bar is presented that provides firmness and prevents relapse even without grafts. The last 15 patients with craniofacial anomalies were operated with this modification. At the stage of the supraorbital bar osteotomy, bilateral small triangles are created at the end of the bar. Then, on the lateral orbital rim, two small no

Management of neonates with nonsynostotic occipital plagiocephaly has been controversial, and there has been a lack of uniformity concerning its treatment. Patients with nonsynostotic occipital plagiocephaly have been treated surgically or with cranial remodeling orthotic devices and have shown improvement in asymmetry. The cost of orthotic treatment has risen, and its validity has been contested by many third-party insurance payers. The effectiveness of orthotic treatment has not been adequately compared to the natural history of nonsynostotic occipital plagiocephaly. A nonsurgical, nonorthot

Isotretinoin is a retinoid that derivates from vitamin A. It is indicated for recalcitrant nodular acne treatment, but it has been classified as teratogenic. A wide spectrum of birth defects including craniofacial, heart and nervous system malformations have been described associated to prenatal exposure to this drug. We report the case of a newborn with a history of prenatal exposure to isotretinoin with craniofacial defects, including facial paralysis, right anotia, left microtia and complex heart disease. Key words: isotretinoin, congenital abnormalities, teratology.

Costello syndrome (CS) is a RASopathy characterized by a wide range of cardiac, musculoskeletal, dermatological, and developmental abnormalities. The RASopathies are defined as a group of syndromes caused by activated Ras/mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling. Specifically, CS is caused by activating mutations in HRAS. Although receptor tyrosine kinase (RTK) signaling, which is upstream of Ras/MAPK, is known to play a critical role in craniofacial and dental development, the craniofacial and dental features of CS have not been systematically defined in a large group of individuals.

OBJECTIVE: Research linking pediatric craniofacial growth, airway physiology, and sleep-disordered breathing has expanded rapidly in recent years. However, a structured overview of global research trends in this interdisciplinary field remains limited. This study aimed to map publication patterns, international collaboration networks, and evolving thematic structures in pediatric craniofacial growth and airway research between 2020 and 2024.
METHODS: A bibliometric analysis was conducted using records retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection. Original research articles and reviews pu

Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is a rare condition characterised by the abnormal growth of gingival tissue, leading to a thickened and fibrous appearance of the gingiva. It can show syndromic and non-syndromic associations. In this case report, the surgical management of HGF associated with the Zimmermann-Laband syndrome was successfully carried out using three different methods: conventional gingivectomy, electrocautery and diode laser gingivectomy. These techniques have proven to be effective in treating hereditary gingival fibromatosis, restoring normal gingival appearance and impro

Many areas of health research increasingly involve end users of research (typically patients and their families/caregivers) in study design, management, and dissemination. Beyond recruiting patients as research participants, the shift is towards engaging patients, parents and caregivers as active partners on the research team, who are recognised and valued as 'experts-by-experience' (EbyE). Currently, involving EbyE is not routine in global craniofacial research. This paper highlights the value of EbyE involvement, addresses how to incorporate EbyE at all stages of research and discusses key c
