OBJECTIVE: Cross-circulation of plasma from a paracorporeal animal allows successful ex vivo heart perfusion (EVHP) for 3 days. Little is known about the feasibility of prolonged EVHP without a paracorporeal animal. Circulating immune complexes associated Loa loa antigen in sera of 27 subjects with Loa loa (13 'occult' and 14 microfilaraemic infections) was detected with Polyethylene glycol enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (PEG-ELISA) in a controlled study. In experiments on parabiotic rats with crossed circulation and separate innervation mechanical or burn trauma of one of the partners was followed by shock-like condition of the other one, and by microcirculatory changes in the mesentery typical of burn or traumatic shock. It shows that in burn shock, as well as in traumatic one, the detected changes in microcirculation are due to humoral, but not to neural factors.

Chemical conditions for cross-linking rat erythrocytes with bis(sulfosuccinimidyl)suberate (BS3) and 3,3' dithiobis(sulfosuccinimidyl propionate) (DTSSP) have been studied. Schmallenberg virus (SBV) emerged across Europe in 2011 and Belgium was among the first countries affected. In this study, published findings are combined with new data from veterinary surveillance networks and the Belgian reference laboratory for SBV at the Veterinary and Agrochemical Research centre (CODA-CERVA) to reconstruct the epidemic in Belgium.
