Can Italians Understand Spanish? Language Closeness Exacerbates the Illusion of Understanding.

People often understand parts of languages that are closely related to their native tongue. But do they understand what the speaker intends to convey? We discovered that linguistic similarity induces an illusion of understanding, leading people to believe they understand more than they actually do. In Study 1, adult native Italian speakers overestimated their understanding of a speaker's intent more when they listened to Spanish (close language) than to Northern Jiangsu Chinese (distant language). In Study 2, adult native Mandarin Chinese speakers overestimated their understanding more when th

The Youth Physical Activity Promotion Model in Spain and Chile: Comparison of Psychological and Social Variables.

The Youth Physical Activity Promotion Model (Welk, 1999) has provided a specific framework to understand children's and adolescents' physical activity behavior. The objectives were (1) to analyze whether the data collected in Chilean and Spanish adolescents fit the proposed model and (2) to analyze the countries' differences (Spain vs. Chile) in enabling, predisposing, and reinforcing as well as the demographic factors that influence physical activity. The sample comprised 2318 adolescents from Spain (Mage = 14.5, SD = 1.36; 51.9% females) and 734 from Chile (Mage = 14.7, SD = 1.47; 54.2% fema

Translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the Identification des patients nécessitant des soins PALLiatifs généraux et spécialisés (ID-PALL©) to Brazilian Portuguese.

OBJECTIVES: The growing demand for palliative care (PC) services and the need for standardized approaches to patient identification highlight the importance of having validated tools available in Brazilian Portuguese. The absence of culturally adapted instruments may hinder appropriate patient assessment, delay referral to PC services, and ultimately compromise the quality of care delivered. This study aims to translate and adapt the Identification des patients nécessitant des soins PALLiatifs généraux et spécialisés (ID-PALL©) instrument into Brazilian Portuguese. METHODS: Herdman's recommen

Validation of the Persian Triage Decision-Making Inventory (TDMI): a cross-cultural adaptation study.

BACKGROUND: Effective triage decision-making is crucial in emergency care, requiring healthcare personnel to possess strong cognitive abilities, experience, and intuition. The Triage Decision Making Inventory (TDMI) is a standardized tool designed to assess these competencies. However, cultural and linguistic differences necessitate the adaptation and validation of such tools for specific populations. This study aimed to translate, adapt, and validate the Persian version of the TDMI to ensure its applicability in Iran and other Persian-speaking countries. METHODS: In 2024, a cross-cultural psy

Global Profiles of Positive Youth Development: A Person-Oriented Analysis among Emerging Adults Living in 21 Countries.

Although global research on the 5Cs model of Positive Youth Development (PYD; competence, confidence, connection, character, and caring) has expanded in recent years, there is a lack of understanding about distinct and consistent PYD profiles across youth from diverse socio-cultural contexts. To address this gap, this study utilized a person-oriented analytic approach to examine the PYD profiles of 11,481 emerging adults (Mage = 21.77; SDage = 2.74; 68.66% females) from 21 countries in four continents. Results of the multi-group latent profile analysis revealed four consistent profiles of PYD

How subjective well-being is associated with material deprivation and social exclusion in Israeli 12-year-olds.

The literature examining the relations between economic situation and happiness has focused almost exclusively on a household's income as a proxy for economic situation and, accordingly, also focused chiefly on the adult population, excluding children and adolescents. To fill this gap, this study examines the relation between economic deprivation and happiness by using 2 alternative proxies: material deprivation and social exclusion. The study tests the relation of these measures to the most common measure for happiness-subjective well-being (SWB)-in a sample of Israeli 12-year-olds (N = 1,081
