The authors reviewed all cases of type I spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) in Cuba over a 6-year period. The incidence of SMA type I was 3.53 per 100,000 livebirths. When the population was classified according to self-reported ethnicity, the incidence was eight per 100,000 for whites; 0.89 per 100,000 for blacks, and 0.96 per 100,000 for those of mixed ethnicity. Type 1 SMA may occur less frequently in individuals of African ancestry.

The main morphological traits of Fossaria cubensis and Pseudosuccinea columella, the two intermediate hosts of fascioliasis in Cuba, were studied. Differences may be seen regarding some aspects of the external morphology, as well as in the internal morphology, mainly in the reproductive system. The radular teeth have differences which are rather intangible, not allowing for their taxonomic isolation on the basis of this criterion alone. These studies suggest to take into account several criteria in order to determine the taxonomic position of each species.

This paper reports on 2 hemolytic serious reactions in 2 Arabian patients because of the use of primaquine as presumptive antimalarial treatment given in Cuba to all travellers from countries where malaria is endemic. Taking into account the non-existence of imported malaria cases in travellers from the Arab-world since more then 15 years and the frequency of individuals presenting with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency it is recommended not to use this therapeutic procedure, and to maintain the rest of surveillance measures to all travellers from such region.

215 cases diagnosed of human leptospirosis in the Camagüey Province, Cuba, are studied, for the period between 1986 and 1990. A cargo of copper ore from Cuba was discharged at Swansea in mid-September 1865, during a spell of exceptionally hot weather. A small number of mosquitoes infected with the yellow fever virus, disembarking at the same time, established an epidemic of yellow fever in the town. In the next 25 days, at least 27 inhabitants were infected and 15 of them died. The quality of contemporary observation and recording has encouraged a re-examination of the events in the light of knowledge unavailable at the time. It cannot be assumed that the episode will not be repeated.

Fasciolosis is a worldwide parasitic disease in human and domestic animals. The causative agents of fasciolosis are Fasciola hepatica and Fasciola gigantica but, in Cuba, only F. hepatica has been notified. As others neglected diseases, F. hepatica is more common in people living in rural areas where infected animals, intermediate hosts and susceptible hosts coexist. We describe the clinical features of a case that could contribute to the process of continuing medical education of health professionals in our geographic area.

The conjunctivitis produced by Neisseria gonorrhoeae is the less frequently reported clinical form of gonococcal infection. We aim to phenotypically characterize N. gonorrhoeae isolated from conjunctivae sites. A total of six cases of this disease were notified in the Camagüey province, Cuba. All the strains isolated were penicillin-producing, showed the serogroup WI and exhibited the same antimicrobial susceptibility pattern and plasmid profile (2.6-3. 2-24.5). The results contribute to the characterization of N. gonorrhoeae strains circulating in our environment.

A histopathological and virological study is carried out on a group of placentae in the second trimester of pregnancy, obtained during the 1974 rubella epidemic in Cuba. The comparison between the positive and negative cases did not show characteristic lesions of the virus passage through the placenta, which does not coincide with the reports of other authors who generally consider these alterations as a result of this pathology. Eosinophilic intracytoplasmic granules were found in the Hofbauer cells, which should be studied by employing other techniques for accurate identification.

Three studies were conducted in Cienfuegos province to prove that intestinal amebiasis in Cuba could be an overestimated health problem.
